Silent All These Years (Chapter Two)

“You are sitting on the precipice of a cliff overlooking the ocean. There is a light breeze”

    Bette
sat cross-legged in front of the bay window, Angelica asleep at her
side, trying to amass enough tranquility to deal with the day ahead.
The previous night she had slipped into bed, her mocha skin tear
stained and big brown eyes red and sore. She had held a vain hope that
Tina would reach out, and even though Bette wasn’t prepared to extend
back to her, the gesture would have been comforting.

    “Inhale
slowly. Release, focusing on the cleansing powers of relaxation.” Bette
reluctantly left her calm space and shut off the tape after Angelica
began crying for her afternoon feeding.

“Hi little one, ready for your meal?”

    She
picked up Angelica, cooing lovingly on their way to the fridge, fed her
and put her down again. As the baby was drifting off, Bette knelt down
by the crib and made a pledge to her child.

    “I’m
going to try really, really hard to keep your mommies together, okay? I
promise no matter what happens, we’ll both love you and support you and
be here whenever you need us. Well, that is if your other mommy starts
cutting back her hours a bitOkay, go to sleep baby girl.”

    Bette
got up and placed the tenderest of kisses on her daughter’s forehead,
reminding her why she needed to make this work. Just as she was about
to get the evening’s meal started, Tina came through the door, carrying
    a huge stack of scripts.

    “Oh, you started dinner already.”
“Yeah, I wanted to try something a little more complex today.” Said Bette, staring down the cookbook opened in front of her.

Tina began to make her way to the bedroom when Bette spoke.

“Did you want to help me with dinner? It’d be nice for us to spend some time together while the baby’s down”

    Bette
didn’t know why she expected Tina to even consider it when, in reality,
they could have plenty of time alone together but when they were both
so busy trying to avoid one another, it felt as if they’d barely seen
each other. She knew her attempts to reconnect were, occasionally,
ill-timed, but Tina always seemed to have a way out and sometimes Bette
just didn’t have the will to persist.

    “Bette,
does it look like I have the time? I have to get through three scripts
tonight.” Tina said incredulously. She calmed herself and tried to make
    a civil offer.

“Look, after dinner I’ll clean up, okay? I just need the quiet time now to get something accomplished.”

    Exasperated,
Tina retired to the bedroom to change and settle down to work. She had
felt that same surge of anger; she heard herself say all those horrible
things and felt her skin get hot with rage, but felt disconnected,
somehow. This brought her to her current state: empty and confused,
knowing that her attempt to appease Bette was too little too late.

    * * * * * * *

    Bette emerged from Angelica’s room.

    “Is she down, Bette?”
“Yeah, she’s been relatively quiet today. She must take after you” Bette said teasingly.

Tina smiled for what felt like the first time in ages.

    “Do you want some help?”

    Tina surveyed the kitchen.

“I think I’ve got everything under control” she said, suddenly cold again.
     ”Tina, we need to talk–”
“Bette, I don’t want to talk. I’m exhausted, maybe tomorrow.”

Bette quickly weighed her options and decided it was now or never.

“I know you were with Josh in Vancouver” (Gasp! To be continued…)

    1. You ladies will say I’m sorry to leave you with cliff hangers, but you are really not I just want Bette to get stronger and stop licking Tinas feet, and letting Tina walk all over her. I would fix my meals and to hell with Tina. Everything is going to work out. Tina will end up with no friends and the shoe will be on the other foot thanks

    2. Is time for some talk! i can`t wait for you next post. This chapter show us how much Bette loves Angelica and Tina, i will like see this 3 together and happies but i think this wont`happen in season 3 thanks for your post.

    3. These days I was wondering one thing: can someone hole unconditional love to another, regardless how selfish or bitchy she could be to you? I don’t think I can do that. But maybe Bette could, since she could be soooo romantic and tender sometimes.

    4. Ha! Try wiggling yourself out of that one, Tina. If Alice is the so-called “dirty bisexual,” Tina is just plain dirty. She doesn’t play fair with Bette. I don’t like her very well in season 3. — Great post there, Prof, however short. Please don’t leave us hanging too long. Cheers!

    5. Why is our Bette suffering so? Was she an evil person in another life? She is trying to be redeemed. She is improving herself. I don’t remember Bette being as bitchy as Tina has been in S3.

    6. well well well, she said it.what will be Tina answer??sad story but beautiful writing.I would like so much to see Bette and Tina happy together ,giving us some hope ,there are my heros

    7. from everything i see of S3 from across the ocean i just want Bette to get some spine back – did Tina drink the bitch potion that Helena was on last season. but brilliantly written 0 i could feel Bette’s pain so much,,,ouch

    8. OK Widder, you’ve got the proverbial poop poised to hit the fan. Waiting to see it fly. I think I’ll put on my raincoat before I read the next chapter (which I am looking forward to despite the promised fecal content). Maybe jumbo gargage bags would be better.

    9. Oh, don’t leave us hanging! Loving this story and looking forward to more. I’m hoping that Bette has a straight (insert joke here) up fit in the next chapter. I just want her to go ape shit on Tina. Will it solve anything? Probably not but I do know that I’ll feel better. Woman up and release the rage, Bette (insert joke here)!
