The first date
chapter 3
At five minutes to nine Saturday morning Tina pulled up in front of Bette’s house. She turned off the ignition and took a deep breath. Before she could exit the car, the passenger side was opened and Bette jumped in.
“You startled me.” Bette had often been late to social engagements with Tina so the blonde was surprised…and pleased.
“I’m ready,” grinned Bette.
As they drove along Tina glanced at Bette and saw her face alight with pleasure and anticipation.
“Do you think you have guessed where we are going?” asked Tina.
“No,” said a surprised Bette. “I know we’re not going to the beach because we’re heading west, but I’m just happy to be going somewhere…with you.”
Tina frowned slightly, a little embarrassed that she had interpreted Bette’s pleasure as the result of having figured her out. As though she read Tina’s mind she turned to the left in her seat and put her hand on Tina’s arm for a moment in a gesture of reassurance.

“Griffith Park,” said Bette as they drove through the entrance.
“Are we going to the planetarium?” Bette asked as the observatory dome came into view.
“We’re headed for something behind it,” answered Tina.
In a few minutes they pulled up in front of a historic-looking house.
“Frank Lloyd Wright,” said Bette with real pleasure as she looked at this house that Wright had built in the 1920s.
“Have you seen it before?”
“No.”
As they got out of the car Tina had a huge smile because she had so wanted this to be something new to Bette, something artistic that Bette had not seen. And it was. It was the Ennis-Brown house which was built when Wright was fascinated with ancient Mexican civilizations.
“I’ve….NEVER seen this.” Bette had started to say, “I’ve seen many Wright structures” and thought about naming them, but she thought better of it. This was not the time to show off what she knew; it was time to show her appreciation to Tina.
She turned toward her ex-partner and saw the huge smile on her face. It was a look that expressed real happiness and she hadn’t seen that on Tina’s face in a long while. They both smiled happily at each other.

I’ve actually never seen “Rebel Without a Cause.” I’ll have to hunt for it sometime. And thanks for the CAPS warning. ;)

Loved this thanks so much for POSTING
Hey p, really enjoyed the progress they made. : )
Hey pancha, is the Ennis-Brown house the one they used for the exteriors on that wonderfully schlocky Vincent Price movie “The House on Haunted Hill”? Scared the crap out of me when I was a kid, I had to run and hide behind a chair for certain parts, like the animated skeleton. The acid bath was pretty freightening, too. I know it was a Lloyd Wright exterior, but for some reason the interior was late Victorian cardboard. And “Rebel Without a Cause”, well I know some people are really big James Dean fans. I take it neither Bette nor Tina thought it a cool enough evening to wear a red jacket, probably a good thing in that neighborhood. Just ask Sal Mineo.
Most Excellent! I am really enjoying this story – THanks so very much for writing.
This continues to be so good. I hope you are doing well.

Fantastic, Pancha. I love the fact that these two have been in a relationship for 8+ years and can still give coy looks on a “first date”. Thanks for posting this.
Loving it so much. Is it so wrong that I REALLY wanted Tina to go in with Bette? I don’t think so…
