    chapter 6

     

    “When are you two going to start going steady?” Alice asked Bette and Tina as they sat at a table at the Planet with Shane, Kit, Jenny and Helena. .

    For a while Bette and Tina had tried to keep their dating secret. When they went to the Planet or anywhere around West Hollywood, they always took Angelica, pretending to be “just” moms and not two women working on a personal relationship.

    “Alice knows,” Bette told Tina about a week before before.

    “How do you know that?”

    “She asked me why I didn’t take you to the new chick flick at Cinema 75.”

    “What did you say?”

    “I told her that that film had a rating that was too high for a child between three and four. I also pointed out that it wasn’t Cinema 75, that it just seemed like they had 75 screens when you were looking for the movie you wanted.”

    “She said we go lots of places without Angelica and she named several of the out-of-the-way places we had been to.”

    “I think she followed one of us.” Bette concluded.

    “Ah, well…I can believe that,” and Tina started laughing in spite of herself.

    “Well, we had a secret courtship for three months. Pretty good, considering Alice is always suspicious.”

    “Did you hear me? When are you two going to start going steady… wearing each other’s rings around your necks?”

    “You’re dating?” Helena asked with surprise.

    “Baby sis?” was all that Kit managed to say.”

    “You’ve been outed,” observed Jenny. “What do you have to say for yourselves?”

    Bette and Tina both had embarrassed small smiles on their faces as they looked around the table. They explained that they had been dating about three months and were seeing a therapist.

    “So you’re trying to put things back together?” Asked Kit and Bette and Tina confirmed this.

    “It’s not just about Angelica?” Helena asked.

    “No, it’s about us.”

    “How did you know about this?” Shane asked Alice.

    “I got suspicious when I phoned Bette’s home with no answer and then I started called Tina’s condo and she wasn’t at home either. Actually, I got a little suspicious earlier by watching them while they were with Angelica. They seemed too comfortable together…not just moms.”

    5. That was maybe just a little pathetic of Alice to be THAT involved with their sex life at a remove, however nothing pathetic about the actual sex life. Must be a rather nice feeling to have it be both a fresh start and completely familiar all at the same time.

Maybe, but I feel cheated.But my dear, as cruel as your loss has been, I would not trade knowing you, however briefly. It has been my greatest joy.
