Chapter 26

Tina was sitting in her new apartment just taking in everything that had happened recently. This apartment really was just the greatest and she was so grateful to her father for making it happen and so quickly as well. He had paid for a separate team of builders to convert the top two floors at the same time as work was starting on his restaurant. Which was why Tina was now sitting looking round the living room of her new home – she felt safe and happy here and she knew she was going to spend a lot of very happy nights here.  The colours of the walls were warm and friendly and the lamps they had bought at a church bring and buy sale they had been passing a couple of weeks earlier – made the place so inviting. Around her where so many new items mixed with familiar things from her room like her trophies and some family pictures – she wasn’t sure if Bette would really be happy to see a photograph of Emma when she was there. Tina decided to leave it on the shelf where she had put it   – she could move it if it became obvious that Bette hated seeing her bitter enemy.
She was just considering moving when her phone rang
“Hey its me “
“Oh – I forget the time – damn “
“Its okay – just come and let me in – its raining and dinner is getting wet – as am I “
Tina jumped up and hurried downstairs. The top two floors had their own front door that was a few feet from the main restaurant door. Tina unlocked the door and saw for herself that the rain was coming down in buckets. Bette hurried in – her hooded jacket keeping her hair dry  – she was carrying an overnight bag which made Tina smile with happiness – it looked like they would be having a very private housewarming party.
“You are soaked through “
“It wasn’t raining when I left my apartment – it’s a trek from the subway here when its monsoon season in New York “
“Lets get you upstairs  – come on – you know the way “
When  the reached the top floor Bette removed her jacket – she did look soaked.
“Go into my room and put on a pair of my pyjamas  – you cannot sit around in those clothes “
Bette smiled “You sound like my mother “
“So do as you are told “ Tina laughed
“Hang on “ Bette opened her bag and removed a large Tupperware container
“I made us a curry – stick it in the oven for 20 minutes until its piping hot and there are some naan breads from the store  – is that okay for dinner “
“Yes – thanks – I do have food but I have been so busy”
Bette took her hand “I know babe – if it hadn’t been raining so much I would have offered to take you out but I guess you want to eat in tonight”
“I do – and I am too tired to go out”
“I know – its been a long few days “
“It has – you get changed – the towels are in the bottom of the wardrobe”
“Is that the wardrobe I renovated ?” Bette asked with a grin

Bette vanished into Tina’s bedroom leaving Tina to put the food into the oven and get out some plates and forks. When Bette emerged she was wearing blue and white cotton pyjamas and Tina’s spare robe- she had towelled her hair dry and brushed it out. Tina looked at her as she walked into the kitchen – now that was what made a set of rooms a home – seeing her lover walking around looking casual and relax – and rather sexy as well.
“Those always were  the pair you liked to wear when you stayed over “
“As I remember they were purely for the benefit of your folks because as soon as we were alone we got naked “
Tina grinned – well there was no one around now to stop them getting naked whenever they wanted to. Bette walked across and took Tina by the hands
“Nice place you’ve got here – you bring many women here ?”
“Just the one – one hot and sexy woman”
Bette smiled – so maybe Tina wasn’t THAT tired – but she did look it. Bette moved so she had her arms around Tina’s waist. Neither spoke – they were just tired and happy. Bette knew what the apartment meant to Tina because she knew what her apartment meant to her  Very softly at first Bette kissed Tina on the lips – the blonde muttered something as the kiss went on for a few more seconds. When it ended Tina touched Bette’s face
“I think you and I are going to have some very special nights here “
“I think you are right “ The kiss this time was longer – more demanding from both of them. When it ended Tina took a step forward and they embraced
“I can’t believe its really all happened and I have my own place”
“Well you have your own place – that makes you a grown up”
“I know “ Tina agreed “ Scary “
“It is but I promise – you will love it – its great not to have to worry about if anyone has used all the hot water for the shower or marking your food in case some greedy git steals stuff “
Tina laughed “ Yeah – we had a food thief as well  -we never did catch them “
“In dorm rooms its usually stoned guys looking for food at 3am”
“Yeah – that is likely – can you believe my mom brought my trunk over ?“
“Well it saves us having to raid your parents place and steal all your clothes back”
“True – do you think I should give my key back – do you have a key to your folks place ?”
“I do – I do tend to knock if I go there – and mom always tells me I have a key and I always tell her that I forgot it – which she knows is a lie “
“I am looking forward to seeing them on Sunday “
“They are looking forward to seeing you “ Bette replied stroking Tina’s hair “ You know that they both adore you”
“I adore them – they were always so kind to me”
“I think it’s the right time “ Bette said
“Your dad must be thrilled that you see him more often “
“He is and to be honest – I have missed him so much – its good to have him around and to be more adult with him. He always wanted to go for a drink with me and talk sport. I took that away from him”
“The main thing is that you two are talking again “
Bette nodded “ We are getting there – we both want this to work “
“Mom said she would like to see us as well “ Tina wasn’t sure how well this would go down
“You know I adore Kate “ Bette said
“I just wondered “
“Babe – you know who I hold responsible for everything that happened – and she hadn’t shown up to see what your new apartment is like – I think that is really bad”
“I would rather she didn’t show up if all she is going to do is bitch. I told Kate that I just want Emma to talk to me – but she is ignoring me waiting for me to come to my senses”
Bette shook her head but didn’t speak. She just leant closer and kissed Tina again on the lips.
“We are NOT going to spoil your first night in your nice new apartment by talking about your mother “
“Kate said that I have to look forward and not back”
Bette thought that looking forward would get Emma off the hook regarding her conduct four years ago and now – but as she had just said –  this wasn’t the time for Emma conversations – this was time to really show Tina just how happy she was that they were now alone in her new apartment.
“Mmm” Bette said as she deepened the kiss – pushing her tongue into Tina’s mouth and making the kiss much more serious. Tina was stroking the material of Bette’s pyjama top – she could feel her breasts through the jacket and was craving her lover. Tina laughed at Bette’s description which she knew was meant to wind her up. Tina didn’t rise to the bait – she just walked through into the sitting room with Bette and sat on the sofa. She had put a couple of throws over the sofa just in case anything got spilt on her new furniture – and she was pretty sure she knew what the first substance that got on her throws would be. Bette opened the other two buttons on her jacket and lay on her back looking up at Tina. The blonde stood and looked at her for a few seconds before turning off a lamp and lighting two cathedral candles  – the candles flickered and bathed the room in an intimate glow. One of the ways that Bette had always known how compatible they were had been how long they both liked to kiss. “And I want to be with  you – I am so happy Tina – thank you for everything “
“You were the one who wanted us to meet at the station – if you hadn’t – who knows what would have happened”
