Some kind of wonderful – chapter 5
“Oh yeah – well I can hardly be less self confident than I was when you and I met. I think I know myself better – I can see why I do things and why I don’t.”
“Its an important life lesson to have “ Tina agreed “In case no one has told you – you are way more self confident – just by the way you walk and talk”
Bette smiled “Thank you. I am not any more of an extrovert than I was when I was 17. I don’t like wild club nights because I just don’t but Yale was good because I met people who were like me. Who were geeky and studious but weren’t dull. That was good for me” Bette sipped her beer “ What about you – tell me about you – what was Harvard like?”
Tina lent back in her seat “It was good – I enjoyed it. I partied way too much for someone who was a serious student but I always got my papers written in time and I did well – getting an upper second was the best I was ever going to do. I had a lot of fun and found out a lot about myself “
“Such as ?”
“I can be so lazy and I like drinking beer and dancing “
Bette laughed “Nothing wrong with those hobbies “
Tina sighed “I probably over did it and at times I got myself into silly situations. I was probably one of those girls who was having a wild time while you were studying at night”
“I bought earplugs and I didn’t miss much sleep. In my final two years I shared a house with four post graduate students – who were all great girls. They could seriously party but they also had to study hard because of what they were doing. That was good for me”
Tina so wanted to ask Bette about the women in her life. This was something they had to talk about but again – she wasn’t sure this was the right time. Would it ever be the right time ? She picked up the menu that Bette had put down and studied it.
Bette looked at the blonde – she was just beautiful and Bette could sense all the old feelings returning. Was this right ? Was this sensible ? Well since when had any of her feelings about Tina been sensible ?
Doing what she wanted to do – which was to lean over and kiss Tina would be unleashing a force that four years apart had not tamed. As Tina had said Bette didn’t lack self confidence. After running through what words to say she tapped the menu and looked Tina in the eye
“Why don’t we order some food – I think you and I need to start talking about the serious stuff – like what happened four years ago and what we want to happen now that our parents cannot dictate who we see and what we do “
