    Soul Mates – Chapter 6

Helena nodded with intrigue and still a little fear, ignoring the endearment Bette had used when referring to Tina assuming it was just a loving title between the two cousins. She loved that Tina had people who cared about her so much and also hoped that they weren’t the ones who wrongly influenced her precious girlfriend.

"So what did she do?" Helena dared to ask.

Bette glanced at Helena with a smirk, "A few days later, those kids were playin’ in an old closed down shop when Tina got the idea to toss a few bottle rockets inside and scare the livin’ daylights out of those two little fuckers."

Helena didn’t want to interrupt the story so she remained quiet, wondering to herself if she even liked where the story was headed. She liked that Tina wanted to defend her friend, in fact Helena found it really honorable but she didn’t really take to the fact that her sweet, darling girlfriend probably wasn’t as sweet as Helena had thought. She blew up a cat after all . . . well it got hauled off by a firecracker apparently, same shit.

When Helena didn’t say anything, Bette continued with her story, "We tossed some bottle rockets inside a window and yeah it scared the kids good alright . . but then all hell broke loose after that. See, the old buildin’ used to be a shop that sold fireworks. It had gone out of business a few years earlier and apparently some fireworks had been left behind"

Helena looked at Bette with worry, afraid that maybe Tina had gotten hurt pulling off her prank and it surprised the brunette to see Bette just laughing away. How could anyone enjoy a story like that even if they walked away unscathed? Maybe Helena just didn’t understand what it meant to be a mischievous child, her mother had sheltered her all her life.

"All those fireworks went off like you wouldn’t believe, the buildin’ even caught fire. Those kids ran out cryin’ which made us all laugh at first but then Tina noticed a cat and some kittens that were trapped inside the buildin’. Of course Tina bein’ the crazy wannabe superhero that she was, ran inside to save ‘em"

When Bette noticed Helena’s expression, she couldn’t help but laugh and decided to ease the rich brunette’s fears, "Don’t worry, they all got out safe . . . well ‘cept for the momma. A firework went off and ended up takin’ the cat with it back inside the buildin’. There was this big explosion and no one really knows what happened after that"

Helena covered her mouth with her hands, "Oh wow, that’s terrible . . so the cat died then?"

Bette’s smile never left her face as she shook her head. Helena looked so sad and Bette couldn’t help but find it amusing.

"Well, people say they see the ol’ fella walkin’ around town from time to time, scorched tail and all so who knows"

Helena shook her head, saddened for the cat but also completely speechless at the story. She suddenly felt like she didn’t know Tina at all.

    "Wow . . that’s quite a story"

Bette smiled, "She was quite a girl"

Helena failed to notice the sparkle in Bette’s eyes, too focused on how different Tina had been when she was younger. She was suddenly curious.

    "So what happened to her?"

Bette’s smile faded and her tone turned a little cold, "She fell for some loser and messed up her life . . at least until she finally had the sense to move to New York and make somethin’ of herself"

"I’m glad she did. Hopefully I can make up for everything that person did, give her everything she never had"

Bette’s grip tightened on the steering wheel and didn’t even bother to keep the bitterness out of her tone, "I’m sure you can"

    1. Great chapter. I love this story. Hope Tina doesn’t lose her resolve to end her relationship with helena. I hated that Bette called herself a loser, she is not. I can hardly wait to see what happens when helena finds out that Tina is not a Fairbanks. Gonna have to rent the movie so I can see what happened to the cat and a few other things. Never saw the movie in its entirety. Always check to see if you have posted. Thanks for sharing.

    2. I am too surprised by the actions of younger Tina, but then she was always seen differently in the eyes of Bette. With Helena she has the pretence that she all sweet and dandy like butter wouldn’t melt. Helena it seemed to me you put our girl on a pedestal. And you ain’t gonna like what’s you see when you realize, Tina’s heart belongs to Bette always has always will. Can’t wait for more.

    3. i get giddy everytime i see a new post to this story. i like how you change the backstory about the cat, definitely highlighted a diff side of tina that can be mischievous but adorable at the same time. can’t wait to read the next installment. thank you for this lovely update :)

    4. Good thing Bette has the shovel in the back, she can make that side trip to the unknown location. I know that’s what she’s thinking, gripping that steering wheel as tight as she is. Loving this story somethin fierce Liah!!!!! Thank you for the awesome post.

    5. Katherine really needs to let Tina live her own life. Oh well, Helena’s here now and that can only mean trouble of some sort. I hope Tina still has the resolve to break it off with her. Thanks for the post! :)

    6. I’m loving this story. I haven’t seen the movie, but can’t imagine it’s as good. The characters as Southerners are absolutely adorable. Bette’s comment about Tina falling for a loser broke my heart. Can’t wait for the next chapter!
