    Strange Things We Do…Ch 4

Tina: Wake up Bettecome onwake up

    Bette: NOmmmmmmits too early Tina

    Tina: Come onget uplets go

Bette: Go where? Its not even light out yet

Tina: I knowcome on get up

Tina pulled the covers off of Bette who was doing her best to bury her face in her pillow while holding on to the covers for dear life. It was four thirty in the morning and Tina wanted to surprise Bette by waking her up and taking her to watch the sunrise over the mountains. But so far, things were not quite going to plan. Bette rolled over and gave Tina and evil glare as she snatched the sheets back from her and flopped down on the bed. With the way things have been going the past few days, all Bette wanted to do was stay in bed where nothing else could go wrong. Tina shook her gently again as Bette mumbled in protest as Tina pulled the covers away and swung Bettes legs over the edge of the bed. Bette tried to kick her away but since she was so far over the edge all Bette did was manage to kick herself out of bed and she came crashing down on her ***** as Tina stifled a laugh.

Tina: Good now that youre up we can go.

Bette: Tina I swear youd better have a good reason for waking me up at this ungodly hour.

    Tina: I do babecome on

Tina took Bettes hand and dragged her down the stairs and outside with Bette protesting the entire way. Once outside she gave Bette a jacket to wear since it was freezing cold before putting the backpack on her shoulders and leading Bette over to the stables. Bette, who was still half awake, had no idea where they were going but as soon as she saw the horses in front of her she shook her head NO.

Bette: Oh ***** no Tthere is no way I am getting on one of those things

Tina: Yes you are. Come onwhere were going is too far to walk to.

Bette: Then we dont have to go because I am not getting on a horse.

Tina: Awww come on. It will be fun. Please babe?

    Bette: Tina.

    Tina: Bettecome onno protestinglets go

Bette let Tina drag her over to a young quarter horse named Cookie. According to Tina she was young, only three years old, and she was absolutely beautiful. She was the color of night with a long neatly brushed mane and a beautiful tail which she swooshed back and forth gracefully as if she were welcoming Bette to ride her. Bette stared Cookie in the eye and raised an eyebrow as Cookie let out a deep breath causing Bette to back up a few steps. Bette looked over at Tina and shook her head once again.

Bette: I dont know TI dont know about this

Tina: It will be fine babe. Come one. Cookie this is BetteBette this is Cookie.

Tina reached out and stroked Cookies nose and whispered softly to the horse.

Tina: Be nice to her girlgo easy on her

Cookie made a sound that Bette assumed meant she understood and after another quizzical glare at Tina Bette decided that it would be okay. It was still pitch black outside and Bette hoped to the powers above that nothing would happen to her on this journey. Tina got Bette settled on the horse and after a few minutes she emerged on a horse of her own and walked her horse up to Bettes. Even though Bette would never admit it, when she saw Tinas horse she couldnt help but admire how beautiful she was. Cream was a magnificent white horse with a black stripe running down the underside of her remarkable coat and with Tina sitting on her Bette swore she had never seen something so amazing.

Tina: Bette, this is Creamher and Cookie are sisters

    Bette: Mmmhhhhmmm

Tina rolled her eyes at Bettes unenthusiastic reply and she gave Cream a little kick and said something that made Cookie follow. Tina had a huge flashlight with her that provided more than enough light for the horses to see and soon her and Bette had left the farm far behind and were well on their way down towards the lake at the bottom of the mountains. Bette held on for dear life as the horses walked out of the stable and into the pasture. Tina was keeping the pace nice and slow so that Bette wouldnt get scared and fall off, and she was also doing her best not to fall off from laughing too hard herself. Bette had the reigns gripped so tightly that Tina swore she could have ripped the leather in half and the look on Bettes face was priceless. Her eyebrows were scrunched together and her mouth was open half in shock and half in a desperate cry of help as she bounced around a little in the saddle. Tina laughed a little bit before giving her some instructions.

Tina: Grip her a little with your legs babebut not too tightthere you gonow just relax and let your hips keep your balance

Bette did as she was told and after a little bit of awkwardness she finally got it. Bette smiled to herself with pride as she relaxed a little and before long she looked as comfortable on the horse as Tina did. Jessi and Danny had followed Bette and Tina out to the stables and they were trotting right along side Cookie and Cream and as the four of them headed down a trail Tina turned to Bette and laughed.

Tina: Hey dont get too cocky on her Bette. Were barely moving here

Bette: Hey I think Im doing pretty good for a first time rider here babe. See I picked this up pretty quick

Tina: Oh yeah? Okay well see about that

Tina smiled at Bette once more before giving Cream a hard kick and slapping her tongue against her teeth making a clacking sound. Tina and Cream took off towards the trail with Jessi and Danny right behind them and upon seeing her sister take off, Cookie snapped into gear almost sprinting to keep up with them.

    Bette: Hooooollllyyyy shhhhhiiiiiitttt Ttttiiiiinnnnnaaaa sssstttttttooooooopppppp!!!

Bette was bouncing all over the place in the saddle as Cookie did her best to catch her sister and Tina looked back at the sight of her city-girl wife being thrown left and right on the horse and she doubled over in laughter. She slowed Cream down to a trot and soon Bette and Cookie came up beside her as Cookie slowed to a trot as well. As soon as Bette got her balance back she gave Tina one of the coldest looks she could muster and yelled at her wife.

Bette: God dammit Tina I could have been killed back there

Tina: (Laughing) Relax babeno you couldntCookie is one of our safest horsesshes got good balance

Bette: (Pouting) Well stillthat wasnt nice

Bette pouted the rest of the way and Tina decided it would be better just to let her pout and get it over with so they rode for the next fifteen minutes or so in silence before Tina finally slowed Cream down and hopped off her. Bette looked around curiously as it was just beginning to get light and Tina led Cookie over to a tree and tied her up next to Cream as she helped Bette off. Jessi and Danny were hanging around and Tina told them to stay as she took Bettes hand and led her up a little trail that disappeared behind some rocks. Tina turned the flashlight off since she knew the trail so well and Bette gripped her hand a little tighter as Tina led Bette down a little ways until they were at the waterline. Tina wanted Bette to get the full effect of the sunrise and sure enough within minutes the sun began to peak out behind the clouds and come up over the mountain. Tina settled Bette down on the blanket she brought with her and she gave Bette a bottle of water from her backpack. Tina knelt down and took a seat next to Bette who had a goofy smile on her face as she watched the sky fill with so many different colors that later Bette swore she couldnt even name them all. Tina watched Bette watch the sunrise and she smiled at the look of wonder in Bettes eyes as she took in everything around them. Bette looked like a kid in a toy store as she saw the lake and how still and serene everything looked and how gorgeous the sky looked reflected against it. Bette smiled and turned to Tina giving her a slow kiss on the lips.

Bette: This is beautiful babethanks for bringing me here

Tina: And you didnt want to get up this morning

Bette chuckled and wrapped her arms tightly around Tina as they continued to watch the sunrise and fill the sky with many different colors and they listened to the sounds of nature as the fields around them came to life. Bette heard the animals begin to stir and she saw some fish jump out of the water as she watched bird after bird dive down for their breakfast. Bette laughed as a squirrel nearby watched them closely for a few seconds before scampering off into a tree leaving the two lovers in peace. After the sun was completely up Bette felt her stomach growl and realized she was starving. She glanced down at Tina who was half asleep and she hated to do it but they needed to get back so they both could put some food in their system. Bette shook Tina gently and kissed her cheek softly as she woke her up.

Bette: Come on Twe should get back

    Tina: Okay okay(yawn)

Tina stood up and helped Bette to her feet as she packed the blanket and water bottles back into her backpack. They went pack and after Tina fed the horses a few carrots that she had brought with her they headed back. The trip back seemed shorter than the morning but maybe it was because Bette could see where they were going and she looked around as she let Cookie take her back to the farm. Jessi and Danny had galloped ahead a few yards and were happily playing along the trail when suddenly something caught Bettes eye. A bush on her right was moving and before she knew what was happening a rattlesnake slithered out and coiled itself right in front of Cookie ready to attack. Cookie didnt like what she saw and she kicked up hard promptly knocking Bette to the ground causing her to land hard on her tailbone and she let out a scream that was racked with pain. Tina hadnt seen the snake but she saw Bette get thrown from Cookie and Cookie do a mad dash back to the farm and she had to do her best to keep Cream from following because she didnt want to leave Bette alone.

Bette saw the rattler and was frozen in fear as she watched the snakes tail move from side to side as it emitted a hissing sound warning Bette not to make any sudden movements. After tying Cream up so that she wouldnt run as well, Tina slowly approached Bette and when she was about ten feet or so from her she saw the rattler and stopped in her tracks. Very quietly she called out to Bette.

Tina: Dont move babeno sudden movements okay?

Bette: No ***** Tinaso what do I do?

Tina was looking around for something to distract the snake with so that Bette could get away but she didnt see anything so she decided to just try and keep Bette calm.

    Tina: Are you hurt babe?

Bette: I dont think sosore yes, but not seriously hurt

Tina: Okay goodslowly try and back up babevery slowly

Bette swallowed hard and did her best to slide backwards on her butt just far enough so that she was out of reach of the snake but it was no use. When she moved the snakes hissing got louder and although Bette didnt know much about snakes she knew that was a bad sign. Tina looked around again for something to distract the snake with but she still couldnt find anything. Bette was saying silent prayer after silent prayer to please get her out of this situation and then suddenly as if someone up above heard her, her prayers were answered. Jessi and Danny came trotting back to see what was the matter and as soon as they sensed the snake they both started growling and crouched into attack mode. The two dogs put themselves between Bette and the snake and in a flash they had attacked the snake promptly killing it and ripping it to shreds. Tina ran to Bette and helped her to her feet while trying to thoroughly examine her and make sure that everything was fine before turning to the dogs and yelling at them to stop killing the snake. Tina wasnt sure how to get Bette back to the farm which was still another fifteen or twenty minutes by horseback when Lance came riding up on Cookie and looking at them with a smile on his face.

Lance: Someone here loose a horse?

He laughed at first but when he saw Bettes face and how dirty she was he put two and two together.

Lance: She bucked ya pretty hard huh Bette?

Tina: There was a rattler dadyour dogs killed it

    Lance: Big one?

Tina: Probably five feet or so

Lance: Ahh thats just a babyyou okay Bette?

Bette looked from Lance to Tina to the dogs before shaking her head.

Bette: I just want to get back to the house

Tina: Okay come on babe you ride with medad you might want to take the dogs out hunting soontheyre getting pretty vicious

Lance laughed as Tina helped Bette onto Cream before jumping on behind her and soon the three of them plus the two dogs made their way back to the farm. After breakfast Bette went outside and sat down carefully on a bench holding her back in pain as she did. Jessi and Danny came up and sat with her as she looked around the farm and sighed to herself again thinking how long this week was. Jessi and Danny looked at her with doggie smiles on their faces and Bette gave them a semi annoyed look.

Bette: What? I dont have anything for you two. Oh alright here

Bette smiled and produced the two bones for the dogs who licked her face before taking them and lying down next to her feet to chew them. Tina came outside and watched Bette smile as the dogs enjoyed her treat and she snuck up and sat down next to Bette.

Tina: Who knew itBette Porter, dog lover.

Bette: (Laughing) Dont tell Dana. Not all dogsits a dog-by-dog basis. These two just happen to be special thats all.

Tina laughed at Bettes remark and she leaned her head on Bettes shoulder as Bette sat back and watched the dogs eat. Bette seemed to have suddenly taken a liking to the whole farm life and for once it was Tina, not Bette who smiled as she thought, Oh man this is going to be one long week

    3. love this story…it’s amazingly funny, especially when you read about bette’s akwardness…but i think tina is mean to her a little a bit, she needs to show her some love…Great story!!

    4. As a bonefied city-slicker myself…..however, being in Oklahoma kinda’ puts you in the know……even as as city-gal! But, what about the infamous “roll in the hay” like Bette/Tina literally having sex in the barn! ;D 5-stars
