Strangers At First Sight (Prologue)
Alice’s POV-
I stood alone in my darkened, moonlit apartment, staring out of the large, single-paned window that was on the side of the main room’s wall and offered a magnificent view of the outside world. As I listened to the raspy ticking of the clock and the gentle tapping of raindrops on the window, I was reminded again of how empty I felt, because of her. Looking back on everything, I can’t believe that I didn’t listen to my friends warnings and concerns. They told me that she was a controlling liar and even cheating on me behind my back, but I didn’t want to hear it, because my own suspicions were allready high enough. Then all of my fears were confirmed when I saw her making out with some random woman that she had just met at a club. That’s right, Gabby fucked up my life so bad that not even my friends could put the pieces back together. I wake up in the morning and put on a fake smile to get through another day, then almost every night, reality comes to visit and kick me in the teeth.
I pressed my fingers lightly onto the cool glass of the window to get a sense of feeling, but nothing happened. So before I could let my conscience get the best of me, I was about to turn away, when I saw a gold Lexus slowly sputter to a stop in front of my apartment building. I turned back to face the window and watched as the brunette woman got out of the driver’s side door and walked around to the front to lift the hood, but she looked around at the engine and wires like she had no clue what everything was. As I looked closer, I noticed that she seemed so sad and desolate, and I couldn’t tell if she was crying or if it was just rain drops falling from her face. I suddenly felt very sympathetic towards her even though she was a complete stranger. I guess it’s just because I know what sadness feels like. I let out a sigh and looked at my watch. It was almost midnight, so it would probably take a very long time before someone would show up to help her. Even though I didn’t know much, I knew enough about cars to offer a helping hand, since there was almost always something wrong with my little blue Mini.
If you were to ask me now, I don’t know exactly why I went outside to help her, but I’m sure as hell glad that I did.
