Sugar and Spice ~ Chapter 10

    Friday, February 14, West Hollywood

    5:30 a.m., Zuzu’s Petals

Colin struggled to carry the long flower-filled cardboard boxes through the entrance of his shop.  He had thanked the forlorn man who had held the door for him and who now stood outside the shop windows anxiously gazing in.

Colin dropped the boxes on the work station in the back of the shop and asked his partner, “How long has he been waiting?”

Nate craned his neck around the refrigerator unit so that he could see the storefront.  “Him?  Almost an hour.”

“You showed him the sign with the store hours?”

“Hmm hmm.  He seems like a desperate man.”

Colin sighed.  Valentine’s Day was very good for the shop’s bottom line, but it hurt his artistic soul to facilitate mindless and unappreciative purchases of flowers.

He looked at the long rows of pre-arranged vases of roses with 12, 18, 24 and even a few 36 stems and with any empty spaces filled with greens and baby’s breath.  For years he had fought against the purchasers’ desire for such displays, offering instead what he thought were beautiful and imaginative arrangements.  At the evening of the official days for lovers, his creations always remained unsold and his staff had spent the day frantically creating the exact arrangements he had eschewed.

Colin glanced towards the man again and then turned his attention to the boxes in front of him.  He cut the strings that held each box shut and removed the lids, revealing rows of white, pink and red sweetheart roses.  Colin hated sweetheart roses.  They did not call to his imagination.  However, he had received a frantic call the prior evening from the chair of the Republican Women of Orange County’s Valentine Luncheon Committee.  They had cancelled their order of centerpieces from The Garden Arbor so 16 arrangements were needed by 11:00 a.m. the next day.  The speaker acknowledged the short time frame and Colin negotiated a shocking but delightful price premium.

Colin sorted through the bundles, snipping the bands that held the stems in clumps.

“Remind me why you are working with flowers you’ve described as insipid,” Nate asked.

    1. Thank goodness Kit finally will do what she had told Bette she would do. I love Tina’s dad as of right now. Of course that may change down the road.

    2. The first part of the story confused me a little and then it hit me. Love Tina’s Daddy change of attitude toward the dance instructor. And once again Bette’s home for the fun of her attitude. WAITING FOR THE ADDITIONAL CHAPTERS AND THE END OF THIS STORY, PLUS MORE CHAPTERS TO “BACKSTORY”.

    3. Oh Spumoni…the depth of your analysis for AN…swoon. LOL!The build up to the Valentine connection…will they or won’t they? Tis the question? :)

    4. Perhaps you and I share the same doctor…mine prescribes two episodes of Bill O’Reilly when he feels I have experienced a “set back” as he refers to it. Between you and me, I don’t think he actually has a license to practice medicine.Lovely fluff ‘n’ stuff. Keep crankin’ it out, seems like Bette’s about to blow her o-ring at only 9 years old.

    5. Tina and her dad are just too cute for words, the man is an angel and Tina is very blessed to have him. I just hope he can understand her feelings towards Bette, and Bette desperately needs his kind of love in her young life. My lord, she needs love, affection and understanding so badly. I think the Kennards can give it to her. Where do I find the membership application, please? Thanks so much for posting and feel free to continue to post all the fluff you can crank out.

    6. thank you for this story and an even bigger that you for your AN… I laughed out so loud. Thank you I needed that today. This is just wonderful fluff! The fluffier the better for me :) Thank you again Spumoni!

    7. Hey Spumoni, Just so adorable as these little girls edged ever nearer their objectives.I do get a sense that the displays that the florist created would be right up Bette’s street. Something unusual that spoke of the beauty of love rather than traditional sentiments.Bill watching Tina’s ballet lesson was so funny as her father became the proud and somewhat annoying parent of the ‘best’ dancer in the class. As for Kit it was delightful that her conscience pricked her enough to follow through on her promise to help her Baby sista’s request.More please as they was way too short. Many thanks from Your Loyal Fan.
