Summer of ’68 (May/June FF Challenge)
It was the summer of 1968, and seventeen year old Dana Fairbanks and her friend Alice Pieszecki were campaign volunteers for Robert F. Kennedy. They were walking the streets of Los Angeles, trying to have their voices heard and to get people to vote for the right man as president. Dana was a pretty girl—very conservative—standing there in her orange shift dress as Alice was a hippie—wearing bell bottoms with sandals—a long sleeve blouse with a flower painted on her cheek. The sounds of Jimi Hendrix and The Doors were rocking through the streets. They were handing out flyers, and Dana sighed heavily.
“Do you really think that these people are really going to vote for this man?” She looked at her friend.
“Of course they are, this man is going to be our right turn in our future. We lost his brother who was a great man–, and maybe he’ll pick up where John left off.” She handed a flyer to man. “We’re doing the right thing now Dana—we’re showing our love and support for Kennedy. He’s the new face of our generation.” She smiled. Dana really wasn’t into the politics like Alice was, but she decided to tag along with her friend and join the Kennedy party. She saw her dad’s 1967 GTO pull up, and he honked. She smiled at Alice and nodded towards the car.
“My dad’s here.” She handed Alice the flyers. “Did you need a ride?”
Alice shook her head. “No, I can walk home. I’ll see you tomorrow.”
“Yeah,” she nodded. She gave Alice a hug and pulled away. “See ya.”
Alice threw her index and middle finger and smiled. “Peace.” Dana walked towards her dad’s car and got in. She grabbed her seat belt and sat back. Her dad looked over at Alice as she continued to pass out flyers and sighed heavily.
“I thought I told you to stop hanging out with that hippie girl.” She looked over at her dad and frowned.
“She’s my friend—she’s the only one I got.”
“Why haven’t you tried to make any new friends?”
“Because I don’t get along with anyone else.” She sighed as she looked out of the window as her dad pulled off.

What a great start, AKcb!! I am so glad you decided to take part in the challenge. I love what you have done so far in transporting the characters to this time period and can’t wait to see how this plays out. Thank you so much!!
Welcome back Akcb! What a pleasant surprise! I miss your stories. This one seems to have a great beginning and I like the setting back to 1968. I sure will be here to learn more about the Peabodys dinning with the Fairbanks. Love the D goofiness already. It will definitely be a twist if D & H would pair up. Thank you and pps.
OMG I remember that summer…I was still playing straight at that time
Jackiee, you were playing straight???? akira, i can’t remember that summer. i wasn’t born yet, but, i like the feel of this, the things you’ve chosen as backdrops. you know, my era is off a bit, but have you seen the movie Dick? with Michele Williams and that blonde actress from the virgin suicides and eteral sunshine of the spotless mind? Dick is a must-see, defo. 1974 is its musical focus, though i’m not sure what its actual yearly focus is, i havne’t seen it in years. good show akira:)

Great start, AKcb! Interesting setting! I have to say I don’t know much about America or America’s history, but I’m looking forward to learn more about what happened back in ’68. The fact that you have Al and Dana in the story just makes it better, lol. Thanks!!! PPS
