The Absence of One chapter 2

Kit sensed a whole conversation that was being unsaid with Alice’s reply, but she chose to look past it. Her baby sister’s happiness was more important, not Tina.

“They’re not getting back together,” Kit spoke up after a few minutes of silence had passed. “They’ll kill each other before the day is over.”

“I just think it’s impossible for the two of them to raise Angelica together and not feel the love they have for each other,” Alice insisted.

“They do feel the love,” Shane said patiently. “But for the sake of Angelica, they’re focusing their love on her instead of each other.”

Alice sighed, knowing when to choose her battles. “My poor baby Angie.”

Conversation moved back to safer grounds, with Helena joining the group not too long after. The afternoon dragged on a little slower, the laziness a buildup for a girl’s night out.

When the group finally dispersed a few hours later, Alice sought out the older Porter in her office. She stood at the doorway, shuffling her feet as she looked at the ground.

“Hey Kit.” The normally talkative woman was reserved, a cue Kit picked up. “Look, about what I said earlier…”

“I know you love both of them, and you have both their best interests in mind,” Kit began. “But I think you should know better than anyone just how stubborn they are. Especially my baby sister.”

The resulting sigh was heavy, laden with unspoken guilt. “They need time. And communication. Not some floozy of a student and a spineless man hanging around them.”

Kit laughed as she heard the blonde’s words. She motioned for Alice to join her at the sofa, smiling gently at her as she settled down.

“Be that as it may, they’ve made their choice.”

“I know,” Alice rolled her eyes. “They’ve made their bed, now they have to lie in it. Why can’t they lie in it together?”

    “Alice.”

“Kit, you used to be their biggest fan. What happened?”

“I saw the pain in Bette’s eyes. She made a mistake, but Tina fueled the guilt trip. She made sure my baby sister paid for her mistakes every day of her life.” Kit was on a roll now, she couldn’t hold back. “And she had no business keeping Angelica away from Bette. I can only imagine what choice words Henry has been feeding her.”
