The Adventures Of Bette Porter And Sissee Gardner After Yale (Part 6, Chapter 3)

The Adventures Of Bette Porter and Sissee Gardner After Yale (Part 6, Chapter 3)

    PART SIX: TIJUANA, MEXICO

    Chapter 3

We drove back to Revolucion Avenue to shop. The first thing we did as typical tourists was get our photo taken with a donkey and cart. I had read that it was a TJ tradition since the 1940’s . We sat up on the cart. Behind us was a blatant Tijuana sign. They put huge sombreros on our heads and even though we felt silly, it made a fun souvenir.

Then we walked in and out of the shops, checking out a myriad of glazed pottery, leather goods, perfumes, handicrafts, lots and lots of clothes, assorted paintings with frames that were assembly-line reproductions and even cigars which Bette bought several boxes of.

We made our share of purchases, dickering the prices, playing that game that was expected of Americanos. When we were overloaded, we walked back to the car and locked our items inside, only to go back for more.

I noticed several times that young boys were drifting through the crowded sidewalks asking tourists if they would give them a dollar for four quarters. I was curious so I bit the bait. I gave just such a boy a dollar bill for his four quarters. As I peered closer at the coins, I looked up for the boy and he was gone. He had disappeared like Houdini.

Upon closer scrutiny, I realized one of the coins, although as big as a quarter, was only a peso – worth about a penny and having no value whatsoever in the states. Bette shook her head at me for being so gullible but I figured that little tyke needed that quarter more than I did.

For lunch we actually bought carnitas off a taco wagon in the street. We knew were taking a chance and when we waited for the tacos we heard a chopping sound. They had barbecued the pork over hot coals, off to the side and then, chop, chop, chopped it into thin strips. Bette and I looked at each other and she said, “They say it’s pork but I’ll bet it’s dingo!” We had a good laugh over that and in spite of our suspicions, the tacos were so good we had seconds.

    1. kbergin47, Thanks for your encouragement. Sorry if you think the chapter is short. It isn’t really because I try to do 1500 – 2000 words per chapter and it is over 1500. Tijuana is fun anytime, although they are getting pretty tight on the borders nowadays. I wish I had more time to push out these chapters faster but time is not my friend, it keeps snubbing me and I don’t get enough of it.

    2. Sissee -I don’t know if I ever told you this before but I think Mexico maybe my favorite adventure. I’m not sure why. It may be that Bette’s adventurous spirit shone through most to me here. You always hit the right romantic note and here we also get a great adventure. JMHOVal

    3. Val, You know I appreciate your comment. You girls spoiled me with your positive and dependable comments in Betteville (those were the days of yore that I miss so much!) But I will continue to post my story and am happy for the readers I have. No, I never knew this was your favorite Adventure but it was easy for me to write because I had been there so many times. The incident with the cop pulling us over actually happened to us. In the first version I had the girls pay which is what we did but JBLH was ticked because I let Bette “bribe” somebody. This version even I like better and honestly, I really did have such a Press Pass – still do, although of course the Sissee Gardner here is fictitious. Thanks my friend. You know this experience in fanfic humbles me.
