The Adventures Of Bette Porter And Sissee Gardner Living Happily Ever After (Part 3, Chapter 1)
PART THREE: SAN PEDRO, CALIFORNIA
Chapter 1
As soon as we got back into the car, Bette confronted me.
“What happened to you?” she said, as she turned on the motor.
“Bette that house is so out of our league.”
“Did you like it or not?”
“I loved it! I absolutely loved it but when I found out how much it would cost us, I got turned off in a hurry.”
“Just because they say a million dollars doesn’t mean it’s going to cost that much.” she said, while turning around in the cul de sac.
“No, it’ll probably be more!”
“How do you figure that?”
“Oh come on, Bette!” I did not want to raise my voice in front of Angie but I managed to do it in a hushed way. “One million, nine hundred thousand, eight hundred thousand, seven hundred thousand, what’s the difference? It’s all the same and we just don’t have that kind of money!”
“You’re not thinking Sis!” She tried to hold her voice down too but I could hear the anger coming through.
“That’s because I get nervous with those kind of numbers. I don’t want to think about it. It’s a dream house, no doubt about it, but we can’t afford it!”
“You give up too fucking easy.”
“Show me the money!”
“Listen to me,” she said, lowering her voice, as she drove back down to the harbor, “You know I got $320,000 from my house; you split with Howie and got $200,000. That’s a half a million right there.”
“Half is the definitive word.”
“Nobody pays cash for a house.”
“And we don’t need a half a million dollar mortgage.”
“No, but if we’re determined enough we could get that house.”
“How?”
“By pooling our resources.”
“You know mine are limited.”
“I have investments you don’t even know about.”
“And that’s your money!”
“We have a commitment to each other. We’re in this together.”
“Even if we sucked all our resources dry, it’s still going to leave us with a whopping mortgage payment to make every month.
“Okay, you make five thousand dollars a month and I make seven, together that’s twelve. We could easily make a three to four thousand dollar mortgage payment a month.”

Yeah, boo has grown to know the difference of the two household from her two mommies. It is always some adjustment for her to get use to it, especially she is just about 3? Sissee really know how Bette feels. They are soulmates to each other. I am not a mother, but I know it would be hard to witness the separation. I am sure Bette is determined to get the house, and to get themselves pregnant in the future.
BB, Yes, in my story Angie is three years old and yes, imagine how difficult it is for all concerned, from Tina letting Angie go to Bette, to Bette having to let Angie go back to Tina and for Sissee to see what it does to Bette. I say no wonder they want more children to be able to divide that love with more balance. As usual, my friend, you have a good view of Bette and Sissee’s future, except for…………well, I can’t say now, so you will just have to read on.
awwwww that was painful the thought of seeing Angie n B crying, very good chapter sissee…r they gonna buy the house?
Gummy Bear, Thanks for seeing the chapter the way it was meant, to question whether or not they will try to buy the house and “the painful thought of seeing Angie and B crying.” Will they buy the house? They are sure going to try and with some good luck going their way, it becomes possible.
The separation drama is so heart-breaking. but I’m not into the line from Bette in this chapter:”No, but it just makes me all the more determined to have one of my own that I don’t have to give back at the end of the day.”I dont think a brand-new chind would be a substitute for Angie. In my point of view, the quantity of love to every children of yours should be equal.
loved the chapter sisee, i do agree with dancemaple though, that line sounds really dismissive of angie! pps
Great chapter Sis! I have to disagree with the first two comments. Bette isn’t looking to “substitute” Angie by having a child of her own. It’s just that it kills her inside to have to share her & not spend all of her time with her. She could never love her any less when she has her own child. That’s the great thing about love, it has no boundries.
Kbergin47, Thanks for being supportive on the issue above. I personally think that it’s a testimony of Bette’s love for Angelica that she should even want more children. It’s kind of like death. It’s been my observation that if someone was happily married and their spouse dies, they can’t wait to get remarried to fill in that void. If they were unhappy in marriage, they will think twice of ever doing it again. Comparing the two, in other words, Bette loves Angie so much she wants more children.
Mushy, Thanks for your encouragement, however, as per Angie, please see above. Bette has used that rationale before, as a very strong reason for her to want another child, hating to give up Angie at the end of her having temporary custody. I am struggling with anyone who doesn’t get that. She so loves the child that it grieves her for several days having to give her up. Having more kids makes it necessary to divide that love and yet, each child is special unto themselves.
dance maple, Thank you for that challenging comment. As we all know Bette, after five seasons of TLW, there is no way her love for Angie would ever change. Please just picture it. Bette and Sissee have a child of their own, maybe two. Imagine three car seats then, one baby was carried by Bette, one by Sissee and one by Tina, who is Angelica. Bette will still feel an emptiness when she gives back Angie but there will be two children left, maybe one is crying. Her attention is immediately diverted to fill in the void that is left because she has given Angie up to her rightful mother. It makes sense to me. The emptiness is immediately filled instead of Bette having to beat herself up for two days, as she also said. I personally have three children and trust me to know you love them all but because of time and circumstances you love them at different degrees. You may also have children and hopefully will understand my point. Meanwhile, I really do appreciate your giving me a chance to explain that.
