The Adventures Of Bette Porter And Sissee Gardner Schmidt After Howie (Part 1, Chapter 6)
PART ONE: SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA
Chapter 6
As soon as I got in my car I was remorseful. That was the first fight we had in a long time. I started the motor and let it run in park. I took my cell phone out of my purse and just looked at it in my hand, hoping it would ring. It did not. My shoulders slumped.
I put the phone on the console and waited.
Nothing. I pondered going back. It was 4:30 p.m. She and I had planned to have a nice quiet dinner together at a romantic French bistro we had discovered in Anaheim. I was supposed to follow her car in mine. On a whim, I decided to go there anyway.
Of course it was bumper to bumper again on the freeway. The smog was as bad as usual. I pressed for some soothing music on the radio. No, sappy love songs this time. I searched until I found a contemplative instrumental. As I listened, it felt like my taut nerves were being massaged.
And yet, who was I kidding. Nothing or no one could pacify me except Bette. Bette and only Bette. My eyes misted. I got mad at myself for leaving her office, even though I knew it was best to put some space between us – even though she told me to leave.
Fuck!
I needed to think of something else. I was interviewing Halle Berry tomorrow, followed by Antonio Banderas. A double header. Two very beautiful people. I tried to concentrate on what I would say but the magnetic pull of my Bette was too strong. Without wanting to, I thought of her beauty too. She was MY movie star. Her grace. Her gentle touch. Her soft, warm lips.
I looked at the phone. It was silent.
I willed myself to think of my son Charlie instead.
What in God’s name was going on with Charlie?
When I told Bette about his behavior that night that he and I had dinner she immediately concluded that he was under the influence of a drug. I had suspected the same. She knew him well enough to know how quiet and withdrawn he was ordinarily and for his personality to change that much, to suddenly be so talkative and assertive and then to go into a crash dive on the way home, we figured it had to be from some mind altering chemical reaction. She thought he might have taken something before he went with me and after the few hours we were together, it wore off.

Hi, Sissee, this is my first comment of your story, I just wanna say that I really adore your work, especially the “After Yale” part. I love your beautiful, pride, stubborn, hot tempered, young Bette. B&S’s split brought tears to my eyes, but I knew it had to happen due to the characters’ personality. You made it so sad and true, just like the real world– Love tears people apart. “After Tina” didn’t move me that much, it’s hard for me to like the third season’s storyline, but you still did a good work. Glad to see Bette found her way back to Sissee again, as time passes by, they grows and learns, i am hoping they can love better this time.In the past two days, I clicked “Next Post by This Author” button so many times that I lost count, better later than never, now I finally catch up on the lastest update. I feel great admiration for Sissee the author, thank you so much for sharing this amazing story. PPS! :))))))
dancemaple, Another interesting name. Glad to have you here and thanks for your post. Thank you for liking the Yale part. I’m sorry you weren’t as fond of the After Tina series. I happen to have loved that Maui trip and having Bette and Sissee falling in love all over again. It was a pleasure to write, especially when they made love under the coconut tree and couldn’t bare to say goodbye at the LAX airport. You have me smiling as I picture you starting this story from the beginning and clicking on “Next Post By This Author” over and over again. I know there are more than a hundred chapters already. Well, I’m happy you made the journey to this time and place and I hope we will hear from you again
Kbergin47, Thank you. There is a very good reason why Bette is not returning Sissee’s calls and it really has nothing to do with their fight. As for the extra pages, ideally I prefer just three pages and that’s what I do when I can. Sometimes however, I can’t interrupt the story line just because I have three pages so I have to go on. Whoo Hoo backatcha!
wow sissee..that was so deep and touching..hopefully bette will help too..but nice update…howie is gonna strangle charlie..patient for the nxt chapter..to good
I do believe Sissee is a very smart and concern mother. She knew where to find out her son’s problem – his buddy, and strategically probe what kind of drug Charlie’s involved in, and what kind of trouble he faces. Well, I certainly hope that Bette will put down her pride and return the call to Sissee. They need to put their head together and help out Charlie. Howie may be a hot head to solve this type of a problem. I don’t really trust him as a good and supportive father. His cop mentality sometimes frightens me (remember about his view of gays?)
Gummy Bear, There’s a lot of drama coming up on both Bette and Sissee’s side. I had a busy day today and I haven’t been here to “mind the store” but it looks like we’re in for a new chapter. Coming up soon.Thank you.
Bette’s Babe, Thank you for your valued opinions. I like how you kind of talk it over with yourself and share the results. Both Bette and Sissee need to swallow their pride because there’s trouble a’brewing!
bombastic bully, Thanks for being here again. Like I said above, Bette has something brewing too. Never a dull moment between these too.
Bette and her pride. Hmph! I certainly think she wouldn’t be able to ignore Sissee when she already said please. Oh Charlie, what happened to you? Tsk, tsk… It was once again a very beautiful chapter. Thanks! PPS!
Good Chapter. At least now Sissee knows what Charlie’s been doing. The hard part will be telling Howie & confronting Charlie & hopefully getting him some help. I hope Bette will swallow her pride & give Sis a call soon. 5 pages today, Woo Hoo!
