The Adventures Of Bette Porter And Sissee Gardner Schmidt After Howie (Part 2, Chapter 11)
PART TWO: NEW HAVEN, CONNETICUT
Chapter 11
When Bette had received the phone call from someone in her past, we were back to back again, across the hotel room at our respective laptops. I could not help but hear of course and I soon realized she was talking to Terrell Johnson.
Whenever his name came up, I always pictured Terry the way I saw him the first day we met, in 1985, up at Mammoth Lakes, in California when he and Bette were on a ski trip and I was there to do a story for the Travel Section of the L.A. Post.
I remember thinking he was the most gorgeous man I had ever seen with his yellow ski togs blazing like a neon sign against his coffee and cream skin.
That was six months after we graduated from Yale and Bette and I were amazed to run into each other up there. It turned out that Terry was her boss, being a silent owner of Edward Hunter’s Art Gallery on Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills. Also silent, was the fact that he was gay and the irony was that he liked having Bette around because she attracted men. Not so silent was the fact that he also was a producer for Universal International Studios and I know, from his hit movies and publicity, that he still is.
Bette kept in touch with him over the years, particular when she had her own art gallery and then when she became the director of the California Art Center he was one of her most generous donors. That kept them close until Bette got fired from that position and retreated to become a stay at home mom with Angelica until she could find a better job.
So, out of the blue he called her today and when she got off the phone she turned in her chair, toward me and told me why.
“He wants me to go skydiving with him.”
I was blown away. My mouth dropped and I just stared at her. A multitude of emotions surfaced in my mind but what was at the top of the heap was – fear.

a beautiful chapter sissee, as always..but Bette is so selfish in this chapter..sissee should not go skydiving if she’s not into it
Gummy Bear, I do believe that is exactly how Bette would have handled this because she was this way on TLW. We would be amused at how she was self-absorbed in her work and prattle on and on about it to Tina. We forgave her if that is what selfishness is, as I hope my readers will do. As for Sissee, she is just so friggin much in love with Bette that it becomes, “wither thou goest” kind of thing. I’d bet my money on Sissee going too. Smile.
My dear friend….. we miss you…….. where have you been…..?
Nunya, It’s nice to hear from you. I guess you knew where to find me. I have been super busy, trying to get things ready for a long trip. Not too much time to just chat with friends. You can be sure I won’t lose track of you though, especially when I am on the road I will have more time to write in the evenings. Thanks for stopping by and hope to hear from you again.
hey sissee! while i agree how selfish bette was, isn’t that just bette being bette and thats why i for one absolutely love this character and i totally agree with you sis that this is how she would be on the show…and as for your comment i’ve already forgiven her!! can’t wait to see how this plays out, pps!!
Mushy, I did a lot of research on this entire story from bull fighters to sex toys (somebody’s got to do it) but through it all, I really enjoyed this skydiving series because I know it is nothing I would ever personally do but I got a pretty good idea of what it’s like – and so will all of you.
I’m kinda with Gummy Bear on this one. I don’t think Bette is considering Sissee’s feelings at all. She’s all self-absorbed, & I know that’s just how she is, but I hope she’ll stop for a minute & talk to Sis about this. Have a great weekend!
Kbergin47, Well, it is what it is and I know this follows Bette’s patterns but trust me, it turns into an exciting adventure with a huge hitch.
