The Adventures Of Bette Porter And Sissee Gardner Schmidt After Tina (Part 3, Chapter 8)
PART THREE: ORANGE GROVE, CALIFORNIA
Chapter 8
“Mary! I exclaimed with surprise. “You’re home!”
“Hi,” she responded, in a rather small voice.
At first Bette was startled, but then rallied. “Hi Mary…,” she said, getting up and walking over to my daughter, giving her a cheek to cheek hug.
“Are you doing okay?“ she asked, stepping back from her, tilting her head and looking into her face.
Mary blinked at her. “It’s…..I….no, I’m not really doing okay.”
“Is there anything we can do to help?” asked Bette with deference.
“I don’t know,” her shoulders slumped. She was about an inch taller than Bette. “I’m confused,” continued Mary. “What’s going to happen to me? What’s going to happen to my dad? How am I supposed to tell my girlfriend’s that my mom is suddenly gay, that she’s leaving my dad for her best friend Bette? It just all pretty much sucks. I tried to tell one of my friends today but it’s…..it’s…..well, it was downright embarrassing.”
“Would you like to talk about it?” asked Bette.
Mary walked over to the other side of the counter from me and put her books down.
“Please Mary,” I said gently. “Come over here and sit down so you can tell us what’s on your mind.”
“Well, you told me to think about it today and that’s all I’ve been doing.”
“Of course,” I said. “Please….” I put my arm around the chair where Bette had been sitting. “Come sit down.”
Mary did, hanging her head sadly as she walked over. Bette sat on the other side of her. In an emotionally charged voice Mary told us about her feelings, which were mainly and typically – considering her age – about how this would impact her in her high school world, how her dad was feeling and what was he going to say if she went to live with us and much more.
She needed to unload. Both Bette and I listened intently. We both wanted to hear her qualms. What was important and immediate however, was whether or not she wanted to live with us. She said she was afraid I would move to Bette’s house and she’d have to change schools and lose all her friends and that she would miss seeing her dad everyday.

awesome, amazing and beautiful..please keep doing ur thing..it’s too good
gumbsee40, I don’t get a lot of comments but when the few I get are as wonderful as yours, I am happy. Thank you very much.
I agree with September, Bette is sooo cool! Charlie couldn’t even resist her charm. I’m so glad he calmed down. Maybe the worst is over with the kids, but we haven’t heard from Kyle yet. I hope Bette & Howie don’t make a scene in front of the kids. Can’t wait for the next post.
September, Bette is cool in the hippest of ways. You will find she is a good match for Howie. The chapter is already written of course and I don’t think, given all your concerns, that you will be disappointed.
Kbergin47, Bette and Howie will have a very heated exchange, as you can imagine and unfortunately, Mary and Charlie will hear. From what you girls mention as your concerns about the next chapter, I think it is pretty well covered.
I am reading forward and backward on this story. Once I began reading a few chapters ago I wanted to go back and catch up. I found this takes a bit of time but is surely worth it. Needless to say I enjoy your writing and this story. I certainly look forward to each new post. Thank you.
3raphael, Someone once wrote that they recently read my whole story BACKWARDS. There is an Author’s option to click on where you can get each of our total stories and start from the beginning. But that’s okay, frontwards or backwards, I am glad you took time to post. I have said that posts are like royalties to we writers and from the comments I have received, I feel very rich. Thanks for your contribution.
I am a bit surprise of how Charlie reacted to Bette (acceptance and civil), although he still has concerns about how his dad would feel (hurt) and how to face his friends (same as Mary, her friends). I think Bette would be ok to talk with Howie, given that she presents well to the kids and she sees Howie as a good husband of Sissee. Can’t wait to see the next Chapter, please don’t keep us waiting for so long, Sissee the writer.
I slept in later than I should have this morning. I wonder why? I’ll come back later.
kbergin47, Thanks for your mysterious post. We will look forward to your return visit.
I love that Bette..I know I have said it like 100000 times but she is so cool!! I can’t wait to see how she talks to Howie. Maybe sis and the kids should leave with her right there and then. I personaly would be thorn that is if I was Bette. I wouldn’t leave them behind even if she begged me to go.
Bette’s Babe, Thanks for your comments. Very thoughtful, as usual. Oh, it makes good sense to me that a shy person be opinionated to family but is reticent to others, as Charlie was to Bette. Yes, Bette is a good one to talk to Howie but the problem is not her it is Howie.
