The Beginning of Bette and Tina—Chapter 3

    Previously…

“Do you, uh, do you know if Tina has a girlfriend?” Bette managed to ask.

“A girlfriend?” he asked puzzled, “No.  Tina doesn’t play for that team.  However, she does not have a boyfriend, if that’s what you want to know.”

Bette’s heart sank at what she just heard.

    Chapter 3

Bette sat at her desk staring at the piece of paper Aaron had given her with Tina’s number on it, contemplating what to do.

Okay, just call her.  You’re Bette Porter.  No one has ever turned you down—gay or straight.

This thought brought a smirk of arrogance to Bette’s face, which immediately turned into a frown when the next thought entered her mind.

But this woman isn’t like all those women.  If any of those women had turned her down she could have easily found another woman, but if Tina turned her down, her world might fall apart.

When James walked into Bette’s office he saw her swiveling in her chair, still staring at the piece of paper.

“For God’s sake, Bette, just call her,” James said closing the door behind him.

“It’s not that easy, James,” she replied looking up at him.

“I’m a little confused here.  What’s not easy about calling the blonde bombshell…(Bette raised a brow at him)…sorry, Tina, and asking her out?  You’ve never had a problem before.”

“Well, first of all, she’s straight…”

“And when has that stopped you before?” James asked interrupting her.

“It hasn’t, but that’s not the only thing to consider.”

Bette sat in silence a second before continuing, and before she could they were interrupted by James’ phone ringing at his desk.  James just stood there, not moving to go and answer the phone.

“Uh, James, I think you need to go and answer that.”

              “Oh, come on,” James pleaded.

“James,” Bette said, while raising an eyebrow.

“Yes, boss,” as he turned to leave.

    ************

Tina wasn’t able to get Bette off of her mind after she left the gallery, but she also wasn’t able to get rid of the fear that came along with her feelings for Bette.  She drove around L.A. the rest of the afternoon trying to clear her head.
