The call to her arms, Chapter 3

    Chapter 3

    It was late…

Tina glanced toward the other side of the room where Becky and Sam were sound asleep, closely snuggled together in the middle of the bed. She looked on with affection and let out a small smile. The boy had fallen asleep almost as soon as his head had hit the pillow. And it had not taken long for his mother to succumb to the exhaustion of the day either. Tina had also slipped between the sheets hoping to follow them to the land of Morpheus, but after lying awake in her bed for almost two hours, she had finally given up on sleep.

After Bette’s departure earlier, Kit had kept her promise to feed everyone and had served them dinner. A meal consisting mainly of leeks and potatoes’ soup accompanied with bread and cheese, but it was the best dinner the little family had had in a long time. Tina smiled as she recalled Sam’s widened eyes when, at the end of the meal, he had discovered the bar of chocolate that Kit had discreetly slipped under his plate. The blonde was already feeling thankful to the older woman for her help and that wonderful dinner, but her gratitude could have not been greater when she had seen her nephew’s eyes fill with delight as he ate his succulent treat.

After dinner, they had left Kit and the Jazz Club, and Alice and Dana had taken them to the lodgings that Bette had mentioned, a few streets away.

The place was in fact one of those old family town houses in Paris that were transmitted from one generation to the next, and Alice, as an only child, had inherited it from her parents when they had passed away. It was a three-storied house with a large courtyard, secluded from the street by a huge carriage entrance and adjoining buildings on both sides.

Alice had turned her inheritance into lodgings, but when the war had erupted and, the following year, the Germans had occupied Paris, the place had become one of the main hideaways for the Resistance. Of course, it was still officially lodgings, but Tina and Becky had soon found out that the only other residents that lived here were Dana, Shane, and also Jenny, a young woman who worked as a secretary at the Kommandantur, and regularly fed them with precious information. Alice was going to mention someone else when the so-called Jenny had emerged from her room and the young owner of the house had introduced them all.

    1. Oh my good God! That was truly amazing but there again why am I surprised…. We just witnessed Bette and Tina pulling their first all-nighter… Wine and tea and good conversation like it used to be then…. Huddled up around the kitchen’s wooden table sitting on sturdy chairs and carvers….. Loved thabaprt so much.. Bette did try to tempt her with something indecent… Although it was the tardy hour of a dinner… But still! Clever choice of word there chuckle! ;0) I told you that already I love this story very much and I feel the war in the background and all the uncertainties/heartbreak/worry it will bring! Their goodnight wishes on the stairs put a lump in my throat…. But I cannot help but raise a cheeky eyebrow at knowing that the two of them are next door “neighbours” and I have no doubt that the floor boards in between their two rooms are squeaky…. Well it is an old building after all! You did a fantastic job once again…. One for the classic’s collection! (merci pour le clin d’oeil!) Kx

    2. Well, you have captured my reading interest with this very well written story with WWII and the Resistance as the time sequence and background. I really look forward to your posts and the beautifully written chapters.

    3. Wow Kword! You blew me away with those pages!! It’s such a precious moments, your approach in presenting how they enjoy spent the night talking without realizing the time is speaking so loud on how they are so connected! You know, it’s a whole experience when the time flies with someone special. Though it’s so heartbreaking in the end when reality hits back.. When Tina mentioned her bro and parents. If I were Bette and I know what happened to them which I am sure is not a happy story considering the situation on that period, I would be devastated to be the messenger of such news. :-( anyway K.. I am looking forward to the next update!! I hope the house mate thing will bring more good things for our favorite gals!! ;-) hehe..

    4. There must be something in the air or water because we’ve been getting some great stories posted here. You are amazing at conveying every aspect of B&T’s time together, I totally feel their connection here. It just takes my breath away. Thank you so much for sharing such a beautiful tale 

    5. Didn’t expect you to post again so soon but soooooo glad you did! This is first rate in every way and continues to capture my imagination. I just love the way your writing conveys the mood of the scene – the gentle hushed intimacy of Tina & Bette’s conversation, or the “little details” like the leek & potato soup and chocolate ( a very prized treasure during the war) that makes this story feel “real” and gives me goosebumps. Looking forward to your next awesome post Kw :)

    6. I’m really enjoying this story. I’m glad that Tina and Bette are going to be able to spend some time together even if it is under such dangerous circumstances. I hope they are all safe.

    7. What a beautiful dance you discribe when they talk. Yes I love the way they connect. Isn’t amazing what joy that can be found amoung the horror surrounding them.

    8. You are BY FAR the best writer on here. It’s such an amazing story and how you describe the feelings, it’s clear but it has something mysterious. Amazing. Thank you so much for giving me and many others the chance to read this… wow, so great. PPS

    9. I knew it would be good, still your writing blew me away. You know, I’ve been your loyal fan since Cure All. The_Call_to_Her_Arms reminds me of a German movie I recently watched “Aimee and Jaguar” which also described the ladies’ love in WII. Though it’s an old movie and in a different circumstances, the cruelty of war and the power of love wouldn’t differ. Love is love. Still the cruelty of war made me cringe thinking what could happen to our girls. But I wouldn’t like to see you detour in favor of my fragile little heart. I believe whatever is in your mind and going through your finger point, it must be another great work of love and romance.
