The Christmas Card – Chapter 2

Tina stormed into her apartment, slamming the front door shut behind her with enough force to rattle the front windows. Continuing on to the kitchen she placed the cardboard box of belongings onto the counter, and made a beeline for the refrigerator.  Pulling out a bottle of spring water, she quickly drained about half of it before replacing the cover. Standing there, in the middle of kitchen, she attempted to take a deep, calming breath.

    And failed.

    Tina was angry.

    Very angry.

It all started after she had followed Joyce back to her office to go through some paperwork that required her signature.  It had all started innocently enough. At least that’s what Tina  thought at the time.  When they had arrived back at the office, Joyce left to get the two of them refreshments from the pantry in the conference room. Tina was seated in front of Joyce’s desk when she returned, and Joyce insisted on “toasting” Tina’s first step towards financial freedom.  And while Tina had declined the offered champagne, Joyce was adamant that only alcohol would do for this special occasion. Tina accepted the offered glass, bringing it up to gently clink against Joyce’s, before taking a small sip.  She then placed it on the desk and waited as Joyce finished hers in one long swallow and poured herself another glass. Her lawyer made her way over to a file cabinet against the back wall and picked up a rather large folder than was sitting on top. She brought the paperwork to the desk, settling herself in her executive leather chair before perusing the folder’s contents.  The first page was a listing of all past and present bank accounts listed in Bette’s name.

“How did you manage to get that kind of information,” Tina questioned. Were account numbers and balances public knowledge?  It couldn’t be, Tina thought. Then the rate of identity theft would be much higher than it already was.

Joyce smiled. “Let’s just say I have friends in high places.” The overly confident tone that Joyce spoke with instantly injected Tina with a sense of unease. Sure, the purpose of hiring a lawyer was to make sure that she would get her ‘fair share’ when it came to dissolving her legal relationship with Bette.  She and Bette wouldn’t have been able to agree on exact terms if they had attempted to handle the split themselves. Not that she had even spoken to Bette lately. Tina had made it clear during their last chance encounter at The Planet that Bette was the last person she wanted to share space with for any amount of time.  And apparently Bette had adhered to those wishes. Nobody had seen Bette anywhere near her sister’s establishment in weeks.

    1. Yeah, I figured the account was for that purpose too… so sad and beautifull… But why does Bette have so much money hidden? Is it from her mother????

    2. Joyce is bad news…and money hungry. Why is she trying to get Tina boozed up? I am sure if Tina were to ask Bette for ANYTHING she would give it to her…no need to be underhanded. Bette cheated on Tina and that was wrong but they can work this out amongst themselves. Please let them talk. And please please please throw us a bone called “Burden of Control”

    3. I had a feeling that Bette had opened up a savings accont for their son and then when he perished she closed the account. I am sure that knowledge must have stabbed Tina directly in her heart. Tina was totally unaware that Bette had done that and now she knows that Bette was also feeling the pain of his death.

    4. Tina better get her act together and find Bette to end this craziness. She should be disappointed in herself for the way she’s treated Bette. I hope they can fix themselves soon. PPS…oh and don’t forget about Burden of Control.
