“She writes for LA Magazine, I know the name read a few of her articles. Go get her number somehow, I don’t care how you do it.” The nurse said to the CNA that was working the floor that night, they were short staffed, a very usual thing as of late. What a night it was too, it was full moon and the craziness was out in full force. They’d had six shootings, three car accidents and a stabbing.
“How is she?” The doctor walked in, pulling the chart, she was looking at the nurse who shrugged. The young doctor pushed back her dark hair and wiped her brow, she’d only been on duty for 15 minutes and had already run a trauma. It was a hectic night, for her first night to boot.
“I got a bad feeling…” She said as Shane‘s eyes fluttered, as if in a deep dream. She check the blood pressure and shook her head. She wasn’t responding the way she should have been to the drug therapy.
“It’s low. Diving slowly, like a wind glider slow, but down to 110/56, from 120/74 about 15 minutes ago. I just got on duty to B, and I’m not sure but I got a sinking feeling.”
“Give her another unit, get a crash cart in here too, just in case.” The doctor ordered, as she went out, then she turned and asked the nurse.
“She have family?” The nurse shook her head and then added.
“We’ve got a friend we are calling.”
“They’d better hurry. Being a full moon and all, I think you’ve got your funny feeling pegged, but just in case.”

The sun; cloud hides
And shadows disappear
A drop strikes cheek
And parallels the tracks already there
Well, if a million more rain down
Sickly wilted grass might stand
So go ahead and soak me wet
It’s fine with me today
Shane drifted to the voices as she left the other one’s behind, the voices of her pain and her tattered life and loves behind. She opened her eyes to the brightness that was there, the dog was lapping at her face. Shane pushed it away playfully as it muzzled her and she laughed, a long lost laugh of innocence. She sat up from the now green grass, there was no rain, the sky was cloudless. The swing continued to move back and forth, as if someone were there swinging.
“Hi sweet heart, what happened, why are you laying on the grass?” The tall handsome man asked as he reached down and effortlessly pulled Shane to her feet. She looked around, her wrist, the one she’d hurt was ok. Had the accident been a dream? There was no gash on her forehead either, she touched her skin there and found it perfectly unblemished.
“Oh we are healed here baby, how is my baby girl?” He asked and Shane felt his strong arms wrapping around her as she melted into his strong arms. She remember this touch, this feel, this sheer bliss and comfort.
“Daddy…” She said, tears erupting from her as she finally felt at home again.

Tina stood, shaking. Not only because she was standing only a foot from Bette, and that she could smell Candace drifting off her skin like a cheap perfume. Also because Shane, the baby girl of the group, was gone, disappeared like a Chimera. Where was she? Had she gone off and found herself a cute one night stand? That would have been like her, she could only hope that it was that simple.
“Stop it, the both of you can duke it out later, what are we going to do about….” Alice‘s phone rang, she was stunned and pulled it from her pocket. She saw Shane‘s number and the air was blown from her lungs. A huge sigh of relief as she flipped the phone open.
“Where in the heck are you? Shane you fucking scared me!” She said, holding the phone almost gently as if she were cradling something precious.
“Is this Alice? Alice Pieszecki?” The strange voice at the other end of the line said, and Alice felt the panic rising deep inside of her. Shane never let anyone touch her cell, it was like an extension of her very self. Who was at the end of this line? Alice felt her heart sink.
“Yes….” She said weakly, swallowing back the tears because she heard the loud speakers of a hospital blaring in the back ground. Paging a doctor, then paging nurse, she felt it coming, the pure ravenous fear.
“You have a friend, Shane McCutcheon?” The woman asked and Alice sat down heavily on the steps of the house, and Tina rushed to her. Alice acted like she’d been physically slapped, and Tina was there in a heart beat. Bette‘s hand went to her mouth, they all had the foreboding feeling that something was gravely wrong.
“I’m sorry to inform you that your friend was in an accident. The EMT’s at the scene didn’t seem to think she was badly hurt, at first. She woke up for a few moments but is now unconscious. She is at Cedars off…”
“I know where it is, tell Shane to hang on, we are going to be there!” Alice yelled into the phone, cutting off the woman on the phone, hanging up and wiping the tears that had fallen from her eyes.
“What happened?” Bette asked as Dana pulled into the driveway, still dressed in her night wear.
“You didn’t bother putting on clothes?” Alice said, pushing Tina to Dana‘s SUV, she grabbed Bette and pulled her along. Motioning for Dana to get back in and drive, Dana got in, a confused look on her face as she turned the engine over.
“Cedars! Now! Shane is in the ER, I’m guessing. Drive Dana, drive! Before something else happens.” Alice said, panic tainted her usually quirky voice, and she rubbed her face as she sat next to Tina, who grabbed her hand and squeezed.

Today, I love my tears
Today, I plan to cry
Don’t want to make this better
Today the hurt feels right
A fool you’d say
If I went seeking sorrow
But chasing happiness has left me here to worry
Frustration; my thief
“Baby, come and play. There is no crying here.” He said, kissing her cheeks where the tears had spilled. She watched as he strode away, picking up the Frisbee and throwing it to another one of the players. The players face was blurred at first as she gazed at him. Shane squinted, it was Ronnie. Her older brother Ronnie, how was it that he was here with Dad too? She thought as she mindlessly caught the Frisbee, tossing it to Ronnie as she waved hello to her. His grin much brighter than she’d ever remembered it before.
“Baby sister, you throw like such a girl!” He said, a teasing laugh of an older brother, she said in her thick rough voice. Rolling her eyes as she said it, watching as he threw the Frisbee to her father.
“I am a girl, if you hadn’t noticed.” She looked down, seeing that she couldn’t visualize anything, until she concentrated and focused on it. She felt like she was high, drunk, and cumming all at the same time, a haphazard array of emotions played through her head as she caught the Frisbee again.
“You are a girl, we can all see that.” The other face finally took form, and she saw who it was. Smiling, bright, pretty and sexy as it had always been, the perfect face for the perfect person.
Shane back peddled a bit, the dog hitting into her as she looked down and saw it her was the golden retriever that they’d had when she was a child. She felt her breath caught in her throat, but she really wasn’t breathing was she?
“Einstein?” Shane asked, and knelt, the dog licking her again, as if he hadn’t seen her in forever, and in truth he hadn’t.

“This is your fault!” Tina growled at Bette, who turned from the front seat and looked at Tina. She gave her a pleading look at first, then she said heatedly to Tina.
“This is my fault? Are you going to blame the rain on me too? How is this MY fault?” Bette asked, not wanting to get angry, but her emotions were in turmoil as she thought of Shane laying in a hospital bed. What if Shane was dead? It would be her fault in a way, wouldn’t it have been?
“If you hadn’t fucked the carpenter, Shane wouldn’t have been in the streets at 3.a.m coming to confront your cheating whore ass! So this is your fucking fault you god damn slut!” Tina spat back, never in her life had she swore so much as she had tonight. This wasn’t who she was, this angry bitch dyke. She wasn’t like this, but Bette had created her this way, she’d molded her into her perfect lover, then when she’d changed, she’d gone and found another lover. Fuck you Bette Porter, thought Tina.
“Oh that’s nice! Thanks for piling the guilt up on me, I am not the only one to blame in all of this, you’d better take some of it onto yourself too. I’m not the one that was never there for me. I needed you and you were never there!” Bette turned and looked out the window, as the rain turned the road into slick black mirror.
“Yeah, sure, I’m to blame for you sucking the carpenter’s tit!” Tina crossed her arms and Alice yelled at the top of her lungs, filling the cabin of the SUV with her shrill voice.
“SHUDDUP!” The SUV was silent for a long moment, and then Dana said in a quiet voice, verbalizing everything that they were thinking.
“Is she going to be ok?” She put her blinker signal on and turned into another street, and Alice shook her head. Alice knew, she knew that there was something awful on the horizon, and Shane was at the crux of it.
“Are any of us every going to be ok again?”

“Doctor!” The nurse, Marie yelled around the curtain, and the doctor, Dr. Bianca Courtland went running in, holding her stethoscope against her small chest. She slid to a stop along side the bed, checking the monitors with a practiced eye. She swallowed back her fear, she was a doctor now, tried and true and it was time to get up to the bat.
“She’s crashing, I’ve pushed every thing I can, and BP is down to 100 over palp, I’m not getting the diastolic.” Marie said, as the machine when flat line, the beeping going silent and the whine of the flat line.
“Fuck!” Bianca said, pulling the crash cart to her, she slapped the button on the wall and paged a code in Trauma 3. Marie pulled the johnny open and they slapped on the conduction pads as another nurse came running in, telling them that her friends were there, and Alice pulled open the door and she turned back.
“Oh god!” Alice said, as Bette pushed by her, seeing the doctor shock Shane, her petite body jumping as the voltage coursed through her. Her legs flopped as she landed back on the table, Dana let out a small yelp as they slid another needle into Shane‘s arms. The nurse gave them a warning look, but went on with what she was doing.
“Pull it up to 300, you guys need to go out, now!” The doctor yelled and Bette shook her head, she watched the monitor, the line straight and true as she heard her voice said in a very calm manner.
“We’re family. We are not leaving her, no matter what.” Bianca looked up at Marie and she shrugged, Bianca then barked loudly.
“Then at least close the fucking door, you’re in or you’re out!”

The subtle treasure missing from the box
Calendar has put them in today
So I’ll sit back and watch the world just spin
Am I so surprised?
Don’t I read the paper?
Or listen close enough
When friends recount that tragic visitation
All you sad-faced lepers come to ruin my dance
You were the dance
And I just couldn’t see
I’m sorry if I ran from you
Come now, we’ll lick each other’s wounds
It’s not a filthy crime to weep
“Why are we playing Frisbee?” Shane asked, the surreal scene playing before her. She knew this was real, yet it wasn’t, she was discombobulated as the world around her kept changing.
Suddenly the sky became dark with thunder clouds, and lightening struck a mere few inches from her bare footed feet. Her feet looked like the feet of the Hobbits, now she knew she wasn’t herself, but then again, who was? She threw herself to the side, and they all reluctantly walked towards her. Looking down on her again, faces that held no real emotion, just shadows of the past and remnants of the future.
Shane had lost her father at 12, her older brother at 14 and Zoe at 15, then she’d hit the streets, unable to live with her mother. Unable to live with the Shane McCutcheon that had dwelled in the house of pain. She’s run, never crying, never looking back, never truly regretting and never again, loving, until now.
The third face in the crowd was Zoe, her first girlfriend, her last girlfriend, her only girlfriend. She’d vowed never to love again after Zoe, after death.
“I know you did Shane, I never understood why.” Zoe said, kneeling next to Shane, but not touching her as yet another bolt of white hot lightening came within a breaths inch of her. Shane yelled, rolling away from the lightening, and Zoe stayed still, as if knowing it wouldn’t strike her.
“What the fuck is going on?”
“You’re dying Shane.” Her father said simply, as he rubbed the dogs head with his large hand.

“Give me another amp of Epi. Fuck come on Shane, you’ve got a young heart, don’t give up so fucking easily! Don’t give up hope!” Bianca said, now having started manual CPR while letting the drugs move through her veins, one nurse was at her head, working the bag as Marie was running around pulling drugs and taking a blood gas.
“She’s still oxygenating, but her hearts not beating.” Marie said, reading the blood gas as she hung another bag of saline.
“Come on, come on!” Bianca growled, and Dana hugged Alice hard. Alice closed her eyes as they worked on Shane, Bette and Tina stood at arms length from each other.
“How did they miss this?” Bianca asked and Marie shrugged, she didn’t know, she’d just gotten in when Shane had awakened.
“Miss what?” Tina asked, and the doctor said nothing, but Marie answered.
“You’re friend, she has internal bleeding, that led to her heart not having enough blood to pump, and it just, simply, stopped. For no reason, it just stopped.”
“I wasn’t the admitting doctor, fuck! Call surgery, I know they are swamped but if I get her back, I’m going to have to have someone come and find the bleed in her belly. It’s the only place that it could be.” Bianca said, as she grabbed the paddles and yelled.
“Clear!”
