Taking a deep breath before blinking her eyes to clear the tears that threatened to derail her, Bette pulled herself together, squeezing Tina’s hand, their fingers linking. They were in the middle of a mission after all and long ago she learned emotions had no place in the call of battle. Lives could be lost. Tina’s. Her children’s.
“Babe…” her wife spoke softly, questioning.
“I’m fine. I am. Thank you for showing me this, Honey. I have to find her, Tee. She was here, I just know it…”
Letting go of her wife’s hand, regrettably, she met Tina’s eyes and only the blonde saw the pain before Bette turned to face her men, her voice strong and sure.
“You lot return to the ship, get ready to sail the moment I send the signal. The very second, understood? You four, see if you can find horses, we may need to ride. The rest of you, secure the castle, It now belongs to the Porter Lions. Raise the flag.”
Looking at her wife, Bette smiled softly, never more thankful for Tina than she was at this moment, having her by her side was so reassuring, calming.
“This way, Captain…” Shane said, motioning to a small doorway that led to the middle of the castle.
They went quickly down a flight of stairs, one at a time since the space was tight. Opening to a much larger room with a beautiful stone fireplace and an open terrace that overlooked a small garden, the room was in complete disarray, bed sheets and blankets on the floor, an overturned basin of water still dripping from it’s perch on the windowsill, a broken vase on the floor, a chair overturned.
“There’s nothing here, Shane…” Bette said, exasperated. She knelt in front of the fireplace, reaching to sift through the ashes.
“Nothing? You sure about that, Captain?”
“Fuck you Shane…” Standing, Bette gave Shane an irritated look, her fingers dusting off the ashes.
“The embers are still hot, the windows recently opened and whoever was in that bed… did not want to leave but was made to. They left an hour before we fucking arrived, maybe less. I will gut him, Shane. Like the floppy fish that he is. I will gut him and make him eat his own fucking entrails…”
