The Fast and Fevered Fall – Chapter Twenty Three

“So you’re really doing it” said Helena, as she stood in the doorway of Tina’s office.

    “Doing what?” asked Tina, distractedly.

“Leaving Bette and moving in with Henry.”

“Yes, I’m moving in with Henry.” replied Tina, still not fully paying attention to Helena.

“And you didn’t think to mention it to me.”

    “Sorry, I’ve been busy.”

“Obviously.” said Helena, the sarcasm coming off of her in waves.

    “Who told you?”

    “Alice.”

“Well there you have it. I didn’t need to tell you because once Alice found out I might as well have put a full page advertisement in the LA Times.”

    “She’s just worried about you.”

“I’m sure Alice has enough to worry about without me and Bette weighing her down.”

    “Bette’s her oldest friend, right?”

    “Yes.”

“So it makes sense that she would be worried about what’s happening with her?”

    “Yes.”

“And you’ve known her for a long time as well?”

“Where are you going with this?” asked Tina, finally turning to look at Helena.

“I can’t remember, but I’m sure it has something to do with needing a distraction from Dana.” smiled Helena as she moved to take the seat on the other side of Tina’s desk.

“How did Alice find out?” asked Tina, suddenly thinking that she wasn’t aware that Alice even knew that she was moving out of Bette’s house.

“Bette told her, yesterday, I think.”

“That means that Bette didn’t tell anyone for two days.”

“It means that you didn’t tell anyone for three days.”

“No one wants to hear it from me. They all think I’ve lost my mind.”

“You mean that you haven’t?” asked Helena, a smirk firmly on her face.

“That’s not funny Helena.” stated Tina, firmly.

There was a silence between them then. Tina already knew that the decisions that she had made over the last few weeks had not only not been popular, but they hadn’t even been understood by the people she viewed as her closest friends. She hadn’t even moved out of Bette’s house yet and she already felt the distance growing between her and Alice, especially. Tina’s heart went out to Alice, she was mourning her best friend and Tina felt like she was compounding the agony by not being there for her. She had been so wrapped up in her and Bette’s own drama she hadn’t spent the right amount of time with Alice, making sure that she had everything that she needed.

    1. oh tina…to move in with someone just to not be alone? well, as we know, angie already suffered through it…i hope to read more on present soon to get more on B&T reunion

    2. I like myself and if I cant be with someone I love with all my heart and soul. and not be stubborn and stupid. I can find a good book a soft blanket and read and enjoy. Tina is really stubborn and saying she doesnt want to be alone Bull _======= thanks__________

    3. Such a wonderful story. And I loved the explanation that autonomy and obstinance are not one and the same. And how terrifically sad… “I’m moving in with him so I won’t be alone.” Three cheers for Henry, poor shmoe. And just for the record, as it’s been said in countless stories before… “I turned my life around for her.” What the hell does that even mean? Did she fall in love with Bette at gunpoint? Was it Bette’s “fault” that she fell in love with her? No one starts out life planning to fall in love with anyone – same sex or opposite sex or … well, there’s no other one. It’s a chance you take when you step outside of your house and interact with the world. Sorry, no diatribe intended. It’s just that that’s always bothered me, as has the remark, made by fan fiction writers and Ms. Holloman herself, that Bette enjoyed “flipping” Tina. Sure, yeah, ok, many lesbians harbor the “bagging the straight girl” fantasy, I suppose… but again, was Tina some sort of hostage for 8 years? Wow. Ok. So I should go have some champagne or something. CityGirl, this is really, truly a work of art. Congratulations.

    4. Lastkid? Is that you? Hey there! Miss you posting. Will you come back? Sorry…I got distracted…Tina is not lonely…she has Angelica and if Angelica isn’t enough GET A PUPPY! Sure she says Bette won’t be alone for long but I have a feeling if it even LOOKS like Bette is moving on she will lose her mind and won’t be able to sleep.

    5. I love Helena, too! She is such a good friend – only stupid Tina is in no position to listen to her. So she had to learn the hard way. Glad she listened to her and returned to LA. Hope to see a happier Tina soon. Thanks for posting, I always love your writing.

    6. Isn’t this Helena so lovely. :) and Tina’s reasoning seems to have gone for a six. She’s gonna be lonely? then what’s Bette gonna be! Urgh. Love the story City. Thanks. Happy New Year!

    7. Love Helena…love what she said about collateral damage altho Tina didn’t seem to grasp how important it is…and of course as Hels said, ANGEL, her baby, is going to be really hurt in Tina’s little game simply becuz she’s not grown up enuff to live alone???It made me sick on the show and it makes me sick again here!!! but you tell it so well…and of course its so true many people are Tinas…but good on Hels for trying…at this point in the story I got the impression that Bette was simply rolling with Tina’s punchs by this stage…she had done everything she could but was still being punished.

    8. Tina has no better reason for moving in with Henry than she doesn’t want to be alone? As long as Helena’s giving her advice, she should have told her to buy a vibrator and acquire a backbone, the backbone being by far the more important of the two. Tina’s cowardice is appalling.

    9. Tina… Tina… Tina… you are just as dense in this story as in mine! She really is the most obstinate and stubborn person I have ever read! Can we not make a pact and make her less stubborn and for her to actually behave like a responsible human being?? Happy New Year mate, hope its a good one for you. x
