The Flower Effect – Chapter 2

    Chapter 2

Tina stood staring at the box.  She suddenly felt nervous about opening it.  What message would Bette try to convey with the contents?  Bette was always so particular with her selections, and Tina was sure that since she had sent them from this florist, that there was a special meaning behind them.

She reached for the box, but then pulled her hand back.  Did she really want to know what Bette was thinking?  It was still very fresh in her mind that they had started “seeing” each other again while Bette was still in a relationship with Jodi, effectively making Bette a cheater once again.  The only difference was that this time, it was Tina who was “the other woman”.

Jodi had been hurt badly by their admission, and Tina had strong feelings of guilt over the whole situation.  Still, she knew that she loved Bette, and wanted her back fully and completely.  Was that also what Bette wanted? Tina turned her attention back to the white box.

Slowly, she reached forward and untied the ribbon.  As she removed the lid, and separated the tissue on top, she saw lavender coloured Tulips.  She smiled at the thoughtful gesture from Bette, as Tulips were one of her favorite flowers.  The colour chosen was not lost on her either.

Tina quietly remembered the first time that Bette had sent flowers of that colour.  It had been roses, signifying “love at first sight”, and Tina remembered the card that had accompanied that special delivery.  It was the first time Bette had admitted that she had fallen in love with Tina.

Tina knew how hard it had been for Bette, to settle down with just one girl, to open her heart and her soul to her.  It took a lot of strength on the part of Bette to allow Tina to see past the façade, past the erected walls that protected her heart.  To allow anyone access to her deepest thoughts and see deep into the soul of the woman she truly was, and usually hid from most, was so out of character for Bette.  But, she had done it with Tina.

Looking back into the box, Tina saw the envelope containing the message.  She slowly lifted it from the box, and smiled when she saw the simple way it was addressed.  All it had on the front of the envelope was the letter ‘T’.
