    The Fortune Teller

    Studio City – Tina

I hate rushing. I’m very bad at it. It makes me nervous and forgetful. And the long list of things I don’t need  are the ones banging about foremost in my mind. Okay, just stop for a second. I close the door to my car and sit still for a moment. I need to calmly look in my purse and check for money, cell phone, sunglasses and keys. I could get from here to anywhere with just those few things. Yes, all present and accounted for. I start the engine.

Where I’m going today is a secret and that secret is making me anxious. I tracked my hand all morning as it wanted to reach for the phone to call someone, bleed off a little steam to let loose this uncomfortable pressure. But my resolve and decision have remained firm. The fortune teller and I are a secret.

Helena’s psychic had been the one I’d finally had the sense to turn to when Googling ”Gypsy fortune tellers LA CA” had led me to clowns, then porn sites and finally, and maybe the worst, Internet poker. Where do people find the time? But Helena and Bette hate each other so asking for her psychic’s number was safe. Plus, for assurance I’d caught Helena’s eye long enough to impress upon her, ”Not a word about this to, Alice.” Absolutely, Helena had said and had locked her lips and thrown away the tiny key.

”A Gypsy fortune teller near Hancock Park is my best recollection of who Bette’s artist friend had sworn by,” is what I’d told Helena’s reader. She had laughed and wondered if all lesbians knew each other as well? I’d thought about mentioning Alice’s chart but quickly decided against it. Some things lead off into conversations you very soon realize you’d rather not be having at all. That’s been my experience anyway.

But like The Chart proves we’re all just a kiss or a bacterial infection away from each other. Predictably, the psychics were acquainted and before I lost my nerve my appointment had been made.

I like to be early to things. It’s just a habit of mine. Maybe an inclination to get a glimpse before anyone else? Or an uninterrupted walk through, another way of getting the lay of the land ahead of time. Whatever the reasons it’s one thing about me that drives Bette crazy. I laugh out loud thinking about it. I drum my rings along the steering wheel as I wait at the light. Early on I’d given her a nickname she didn’t like -meaning very soon it was dropped, but for about a month I called her, Zoomer. I still think it’s funny because on the way to most anywhere she does. She zooms.

    1. BB….You did it again! Such talent. That fortune teller describes Bette so well. Bullfighting, huh? I felt I was in the arena shouting…”Ole”!…your descriptions are excellent; could picture Bette in her fabulous matador jacket……priceless. What else will this gypsy reveal to Tina? BB, my fav writer, you have great talent. Thx for the post. Anxiously awaiting your next one.

    2. Well, my friend, once again the words danced across the page and came together perfectly. I loved Madrid and the images of the dance that appeared in my head. SO sensuous and what a sight to behold with Tina and Bette. I love the gypsy and her ways of being in the world. She knows a form of Bette very well and her questioning of Tina was poignant and timely. You left the scene in a perfect spot… with a possibility at one time but would it be true now?
The gypsy has more to discover as does Tina….
And then there’s Bette and the direction she takes….

Superb BB, superb. You did well!

    3. It was an amazingly well-written chapter again. I liked the image of Bette as a matador, It was really invigorating imagination :P
I loved the way the Gypsy characterized by Bette’s personality, it was so true.
what we’d expect a fortune teller if she does not have the right, ask us? -but I think the gypsy found exactly the point.
Tina finally reveal the past, which is always a dark shadow placed her.
      I love it! :)
I look forward to the next chapter! ;)
