The Island – Chapter 38
Alice walked towards the balcony with a small smile on her face. It would be fun to kiss Dana out there. The view was spectacular and there was just a slight breeze. It wasn’t their beach, but, it was very romantic.
Her feeling shifted when she saw Dana’s posture as she stood by the railing. Even from the back, Alice could tell something was wrong. She walked quietly over to Dana and slipped her arms around her from behind and whispered in her ear.
“Are you OK, babe?”
There wasn’t a response at first. This didn’t worry Alice – Dana would often take a few moments to get her thoughts put into words before she would start speaking. What bothered Alice was that Dana kept her rigid posture. She didn’t sink back into Alice’s embrace like she usually did. Alice felt some panic slowly rising. What had happened in those few minutes she had been out of the room?
“So you and Bette dated?” Dana finally said softly. So softly that Alice would not have heard it if she hadn’t been so attuned to Dana.
Alice mentally slapped her forehead. She really should have told Dana. It just seemed so inconsequential. She and Bette dated so long ago and there was absolutely nothing left of the attraction they once felt for each other. It was strictly a friendship.
Alice removed her arms from around Dana’s waist. She ran her hands up and down Dana’s arms before moving away and assuming the same position Dana was in: leaning on the railing and looking out over the park.
“We did. It was a long time ago and it wasn’t for very long. We weren’t a match. We make much better friends.” Alice could tell Dana was processing this information. “I’m sorry you had to find out that way. I should have told you.” Alice took a deep breath. “But you know I have a history. And with as relatively sheltered as I have been during my life, some of those people will still be in the picture.”
Alice could see Dana nodding slightly. She knew it was something Dana was aware of in some part of her mind, but, now she was bumping up against the actuality.
