    “What?” “Is that your Hollywood survival kit?” Bette smirks. “Everything here is very important to me.” Tina defends, actually finding it very silly after what they have been thru. But she isn’t about to let on. “The only reason I’m going to carry that useless shit is because I give a hoot and don’t pollute.”

    “What?”

    “Is that your Hollywood survival kit?” Bette smirks.

    “Everything here is very important to me.” Tina defends, actually finding it very silly after what they have been thru. But she isn’t about to let on.

    “The only reason I’m going to carry that useless shit is because I give a hoot and don’t pollute.” Bette takes Tina’s bag and ties it to the strap of her backpack before heaving it onto her back. “Fuck!” She grumbles again.

    “Oh, it can’t be that heavy.” Tina laughs, feeling just a little guilty. But not guilty enough as she turns away quickly when Bette gives her a look that suggests she should be quiet or carry the backpack herself.

    The climb up the mountain is difficult. They take a lot of short breaks before finally reaching the top. They both take in a deep breath and smile at each other, knowing that the hard part is over. Bette pulls Tina closer to the ridge, holding her hand. Tina laughs out loud and squeezes Bette’s hand in gratitude. She is in awe again. She can now see the other side of the island and it is just as spectacular, absolutely breathtaking. Bette points to the left and Tina gets her first look at the magnificent resort. She can see the thatched roofs and large swimming pools set just feet away from a white sandy beach and crystal blue lagoon. She lets out a sigh of relief as she imagines herself safe and sound, surrounded by her friends, rejoicing in her survival.

    But the feelings of safety and serenity are quickly lost. She feels her heartstrings tug painfully when she looks sideways at her gorgeous guide, smiling at her with her Fedora hat slightly tilted against the sun. She realizes that their time together is almost over. Suddenly she doesn’t want to go back. Returning to her life means leaving Bette Porter and no longer feeling alive. Waves of panic and loss are slowly washing over her. She can’t seem to take another step. She can’t seem to breathe. She reaches for Bette’s other hand and they automatically lace their fingers. Bette gives her a gentle squeeze as if telling her she understands her plight and she feels the exact same way. They gaze into each other’s eyes, stepping closer to convey their true love with a kiss. The island is quiet, only the sounds of the wind and their fast-beating hearts can be heard. Their lips are inches away.
