THE L WING Chapter 159
Narration of President Bette Kennard-Porter
“You have to be fucking kidding right?”
I look at Alice and despite my best stare she gives me a foul look in return
“No Alice – Tina will stand in for Shane until she is back with us “
“Tina! “
“Yes Al – the blonde woman sitting there – slightly pregnant and looking shell shocked “Peggy says coolly.
If I was Alice I really would not be arguing with either of us right now.
“Your wife “Alice persists with her obvious objection – I knew that this would be a controversial decision. When I arrived back at the White House Shane’s assistant Maggie handed me a letter – the letter was from Shane – dated last year saying that if anything ever happened to her she wanted her replacement – albeit temporary to be the only person she could trust to advise me and look out for me as well as she would – that name was Tina Kennard-Porter.
I have discussed the letter with Peggy and although it is very unorthodox – to put it mildly – we have agreed that it is the right move to make. Tina is intelligent and there is never a question of her loyalty to me or the administration. With luck it should only be a job for a few hours – at worst a few days and I need a Chief of Staff that I can depend on as well as do the job.
“Tina used to be my Press Secretary and Senior Adviser so she is more than capable of working with my
team. Are you saying that you either cannot or will not work with her? Be very careful about your answer Alice – I would consider a refusal to be your resignation “
“I was just saying “
“Well don’t – this meeting is to discuss how we are going to get Shane back and how we are gong to stay running the Government and the country in the meantime. I dislike disloyalty as much as the President – Tina are you willing to step in? “Peggy is pretty impressive when she takes control

Ally – Congrats!! All your stories are amazing and this one is simply fun – however I too think with Shane gone this chapter was a little too much chat about B & T and not enough about solving the problem and dealing with the press etc. of course that would have been boring as hell so I like what you did instead. : )
Ally your writing is so good. I feel so bad for Carmen and everyone. It’s just too intense…and what else can you do but put the FBI and everyone else at your disposal on it? And when you have hundreds of thousands of people at your disposal and they still can’t find Shane, what else is there to do but make “good use of your time” while waiting. And yes, by good use of your time I do mean fucking your wife. It’s important that they can be there for each other for whatever type of support they need. And the ability to have those small bits of comfort during such a horrible ordeal is what keeps us sane and human. Why is Alice challenging Bette about assigning Tina as the temporary Chief of Staff? Bette is President, and she should be able to assign who ever she wants to whatever position she wants – without having to listen to Alice’s mouth. I just hope they can confirm things before Bette calls an air strike. Ally, I think this has gone on long enough now…don’t you think you can bring Shane home to us now? Pllleeeeaaasse?
Congrats’ on the awards Ally! Here’s the story… I went to vote (which reminds me that I voted twice this week, for the great writers on this site, and for our next French president, who could very well turn out to be a woman by the way… But not anywhere close to even compare to one Bette Porter…)… Anyway, so i went to vote for the “wheels that keep on turning”, and thought “well, L wing got it already… hmmm, but you know what? I can’t vote for anything else… there is just nothing out there to match The L Wing!…” So here you go, such is the power of this story, nothing can match it! And you prove it with every single chapter! Wow, that suspense about Shane is hardly bearable… But Ally, I’ve always wondered if you’d dare to tackle the possibility of Tina being kidnapped at some point… That would sure be really really dramatic and fascinating, and probably a real challenge to write, with Bette’s reaction and all… But, as your loyal fan and reader, I’ll make a confession… I’d LOVE to see it happen! And I think our favorite dramaqueen would handle that damn well! Anyhow for now, thanks a lot, and congratulations again!!! ;)

Hey it’s voting week, because like Kword75, I got to vote for the next french President, and for The L Wing. And let me tell you, my decision of a vote for french President would have been a lot easier if one Bette Porter were to be candidate…. I love your story and admire you so much for still coming up with a fantastic storyline after 159 chapters!

Congrats on the win and I disagree that Bette is a weak president. I think she needs comforting from Tina because without Tina, she would fall apart compeletely! Please update soon!
If your response to me saying that Bette is weak is to say that she’s just making good use of her time, because she has everyone working on the kidnapping, or that she need comfort, I hope that you never complain about President Bush dancing with a West African group or playing golf, because according to you, everyone else is on it, so what else is he to do? I hope that you all take a remedial class on the US Gov’t. Bette is pathetic if she would fall apart completely without Tina; that is not the definition of a leader. And before you respond with implications that I am a fan of Bush, you are wrong as all hell. I know that this is fiction, but I hate it when one implies that Bette is alpha do to her actions in this story.
Also, it is illegal to have a family member in a cabinet position, of which Chief of Staff is one. If I sound like an asshole on this, it is because I worked for seven years on Capitol Hill

NO Bette!!! Bad idea making Tina Chief of Staff. And not for the obvious reasons like Alice blowing her gasket and just giving her enemies more to right about when it comes to the president being run by her wife…..but let’s think long term here. If anything goes wrong w/ the baby (and I hope it doesn’t) he guilt is going to kill Bette and probably ruin her marriage. She’ll never forgive herself if something goes wrong w/ the pregnancy and even if it can’t directly correlated to the stress of the chief of staff job that is what Bette will think caused the problem. Bad move madam president! I hope Shane turns up soon.
Although u may never read my comment but if Shane is been taken by a group in America y is she thinking of bombing targets in Afghanistan? I mean I assume by this this time in Afghanistan the elected government rules and Taliban r operating as opposite force to the government, in this case identifying accurate targets would be extremely difficult and unwise. It would be more important to find the cell operating in America on behalf of those groups. anyway I love this story and I hope the president wouldn’t have to give the order for bombing.
i loved the entire chappy…all of it and when b wakes up i think she’ll be ready for some loving for and from her wife b4 she steps back out into that nasty ole world…don’t let her bomb anyone tho’, i’d like to see a woman pres. act more intelligently….and congrats ally, and update soon please huh….

Congrats Ally. I read all of your stories and love each of them. As you said in your author’s note, you are English, writing about an American president. I think you are doing a fantastic job with all the legal/political jargon. I wouldn’t even know where to begin if I were to write about the British PM and government (I’m even proud that I knew he was a prime minister and not a president :)). PS I did not think Bette came off as weak or unfocused, she was comforted by her wife during short snippets throughout her day of constant meetings and strategy sessions dealing with the disappearance of Shane. Please keep doing what you do, you do it so well :)

Bette is a pretty weak president. She needs to grow up. I know she loves Tina, but she’s the POTUS, she shouldn’t be thinking about fucking her wife when one of the most important members of her administration is missing.

Hey Ally, Great to have a double treat to enjoy. A hearty well done to your recent award. It is so well deserved. This tale has taken on a new personae as the possibility of terrorist involvement in Shane disappearance raises its ugly head.
