“I would like both of you to go to Jacksonville tomorrow and buy Emma Kennard’s silence. This is a blank cheque – I give you permission to go as high as it takes. In return she retracts her statement and makes amends with Tina, Lucy and Tom. Dad – she signs a contract so water tight Houdini couldn’t get out of it. This stays between the three of us and her and her lawyer. I trust you both to do what I need you to do “

    Narration of President Bette Porter

“No way Bette — you cannot even be thinking of doing this “

“Give me an alternative Kit “

“What you are doing now – ignoring her – the greatest suffering you can inflict on Emma Kennard is to be a very much better person “

    “Dad ? “

“Kit is right Bette — I fully understand why you are thinking about it but I will not do this – its wrong and what is worse is you intend to do it behind Tina’s back. You cannot have any secrets from each other – especially at a time like this when you need to stand together and totally be as one “

“I just don’t want this to drag on for years and it will – Tina loves her family and I want to give her the life she needs “

“And Tina wants to give you the life that you need and that does not include buying her mother off. Even with a confidentiality clause you cannot trust that woman “

I look at both of them

“I hate this – I hate Tina being so miserable and it dividing her family. I just want to make it go away “

“Bette – being the President isn’t about making things happen all the time – its also about just showing some patience now and again and letting things take its course “

“What do you mean dad ? “

“You are too young – just Bette but Kit will know that one of the favourite groups to be the butt of jokes is mother-in-laws. Well you probably bought the vote of every spouse who is looked down at by their partners mother. Your grandmother – your mother’s mother loathed me – said I was untrustworthy and would never amount to anything. There was one hell of a family argument before we were allowed to get married. You never knew your grandfather but he told me that they had to elope to get married. This is nothing new Bette — except she has done it in public in a huge way “

    1. I am so glad Bette got talked out of doing the money thing. As I had said earlier, Bette has stopped being President and just runs after Tina all the time, and as Shane pointed out, the staff doesn’t draw the line either. The fact that Tina didn’t like what Alice said doesn’t make it less true. Ok I clearly am not a tibetter, especially since Tina has done bad things to Bette, but I love that Bette is a kick ass President, and I just want the best for her!!!

    2. I am so glad Melvin and Kit talked her out of trying to pay off Emma. That would have been a disaster. What the hell is wrong with Emma? I think she might be mentally ill. Check her into a pysch ward–maybe Alice should join her too :). Thanks for two posts in one day. You made my day.

    3. YAY!… God I loved that last part with T & L! I understand Susannah’s point, but even though everything she says is probably true, I think that was your plan, and kinda logical considering where Bette’s coming from (loneliness and emptiness in her life before), and I think that’s where one Ms Tina Kennard may stand by her president/woman and play some major kick-ass part with EK… God I love this! …And Tina, your freakin’ mother did that to Bette… not your ‘family’. Ally, thanks so much, that’s official you’re a genius!

    4. Uh oh Tina has gone into Press Secretary “handler” mode. She will use her brain rather than emotion to fight this one. Bette taking the high road is perfect strategy

    5. Ally – You are the drama queen and the leave em hanging princess – this story is so very fun lots of love and DRAMA – thanks for keeping us so fully entertained.

    6. Well Thank god she got talked out of that hideous Idea. We could only imagine if you had tooken that route, the shiiiit that wudda been flyin, wudda been stankin all ova! lol But u didnt, but I fear as a drama queen, you have other ways to shake it up! *Looks both ways* Since the Chicki train, came to an end, a week ago, we cross over and continue on the Ally M train .. Alll aboard Choo Chooo!

    7. I had a feeling they were going to talk her out of that crazy idea. I know these are Bette’s friends…but they get out of line alot…she needs to reel them in…even Tina sometime, they kicking it like Bette is Sally from around the way…she is the freakin PREZ…give some respect. I wonder how Emma feels when she won’t have contact with her daughters or any future grandkids…was it worth it Emma? Huh? Was it? Keep the chapters coming…

    8. That was a close one for Alice; so glad that Bete didn’t fire her on the spot. Bette dodged a bullet herself there. Thankfully Kit and Melvin were able to talk her out of trying to bribe Emma Kennard. And finally the good news that the papers are somewhat spinning the situation in Bette’s favor. I can’t wait for you to post the chapter where Tina confronts her mommy dearest-watch out Emma. And i hope that Shane can keep Alice inline b/c i would really hate for Alice to lose her job and for Bette to lose a good friend over this infuriating situation with w/ tina’s mom. Keep the chapters coming Ally.

    10. Alright Tina is fighting for her woman. Bette’s Dad really came through for her. I like the way that you write Melvin. You do a hell of a better job than the show ever did. Thanks for deciding to never watch season 3.

    11. Ally, I just love how you keep everyone on their toes with this story and yes you had quite a few fall into your trap. Not only are you the drama queen, but you are a devious one at that. LOL This story just keeps getting better and better and I can’t wait to see what happens when Tina gets ahold of her Mom. Thanks for the two wonderful chapters you gave us today.

    12. Oh Ally!! You spoiled me with two updates in one day! I’m on the edge of my seat waiting to see how Tina’s going to retaliate. She and Alice need to just have it out in a major way, just the two of them. Bette’s way of not saying anything to the press just might work. I’m loving this!!!

    13. I am a little surprised at Alice. One of the first things you learn in ploitics is to correstly identify your friends and foes, and this goes across party lines. On some issues you may find a better friend or accomplise is the opposite party. Having worked with Tina before she became involved with and being one of Bette’s longest staff members, Alice has to know that Tina wouldn’t EVER do anything to hurt Bette personnally or personally. You DO NOT “throw the baby out with the bath water”, and Alice should be personally and politically asstude enough to differenciate between the two. YES she and everyone else should be HIGHLY pissed off, but she should also know where to squally but the blame—on EMMA and her alone. In additional everyone should know their limits within the work enviornment and how far you can or can not push your boss. Alice was CLEARLY way over the line here and not only owes Tina an appology, but she should do it in front of the people (the senior staff, Kit and Melvin)that she made such an aggregious error. Oh yeah, she is SOOOOOOOOO lucky that her but is not fired and black balled. I love how Kit and Melvin helped Bette to work through her decision. Loving it Ally, PLEASE continue, I will try to get a PM to you tomorrow and answer your question on your other story :o)

    14. sorry i haven’t commented lately, was out of town…thank goodness bette didn’t go through with the check…i think tina more than able to deal with her mother

    15. love the writing…don’t agree with Shane’s comment about B putting T above all else..she doesn’t and T is too principled to allow her to do that…I think B’s old team are a bit resentful of T but B deserves to be loved and T does it for her. If they really love and respect B they shoulld be more than pleased. Its not T’s fault that her mom is crazy!!!Again I say as I did awhle back, if I was T I wouldn’t trust B’s team anymore but I’d trust Kit and Melvin. Alice is as crazy as Emma imo and needs superglue on her friggin’ lips.
