Bette was sitting in her office. It was 10PM but she was still there. Why would she go home? There was nobody. Not that there was someone here but the Jeffersonian was the place that felt safe and secure. She knew what to do to ‘fit in’. Once she went outside, she always did something that was ‘weird’. She didn’t really know how to act aside of her work.

Unconsciously, she had blocked all emotion. She loved her sister and father but that was the minimal. She cared for her colleagues but if they would be in pain or even die, she would try to block out that pain to.

People always said she was unworldly, like she lived on another planet. She didn’t know anything about pop culture while she almost knew everything that happened in the prehistory. She was amazingly smart because when she was 15, her parents disappeared and then she buried herself in her books. It was something she could surround herself with, let it take over her life, without having to think about how hurt she felt. It didn’t remind her of her parents.

Her best friend, Alice Pieszecki, was always there for her. She tried to get Bette more ‘out in the open’ but that was very hard to do. Besides, she had a family of her own with Dana Fairbanks, her wife and colleague. She had two kids. Ross, who was eight and his little sister Veronica, who was five. Bette was Veronica’s guide-parent (Godparent without the religion). Little Veronica was the only person that Bette was affectionate to. It was a joy to see the anthropologist interact with the little girl. Only then, it seemed like the ice around Bette’s heart thawed for a second. However, when the girl was gone, it slowly came back.

Bette didn’t like her boss, Helena Peabody, very much simply because she didn’t know her that well. The only thing she did know about Helena was that she was very money obsessed while Bette wasn’t. The dark woman had loads of money because she wrote novels about an anthropologist named: Ann Burk but she still worked because what would she do if she didn’t work? She didn’t really have a social life. She didn’t really want one.

Bette had a good relationship with her sister but that was it. Kit was the only sibling she still had contact with. She also had a brother somewhere but he was nowhere to be found. He was angry at her. She didn’t know why.

The anthropologist didn’t know what to do about sex. She was a woman, so she had her needs. Sometimes she had one-night stands with men but they never really pleased her fully. She thought it was because she didn’t have an emotional bound with them. She knew she was attracted to women but she never saw any scientific prove that homosexuality wasn’t a choice, besides; she had never met a woman that she fell in love with, that she loved without boundaries. She had had a discussion with Alice about this and Alice told her she didn’t care if it was a choice or not, she was happy and that was everything that mattered. Porter wondered why she couldn’t see anything simple, without analyzing everything…

She looked at the clock: 8AM. Soon, she had to start working. She walked to the closet in her office and changed in fresh clothes before she sat back down again.

Today, she would meet her new partner, a certain Tina-Mary Kennard. Bette had heard that she was a very good shooter and a remarkably beautiful woman. She also had a son that she had on her own. No husband in the picture. Bette stood up and walked to her boss’ office to go meet the woman that would help her with her upcoming cases.
