The letter on the subway
Story written on April 9, 2011 by kins40.
Bette was searching Tina’s tears soaked face, she was trying to make eye contact.
Tina’s sobs subsided when Bette finished speaking.
"It did?" Tina managed a hesitant smile.
"Yes, it did."
"Do you think things would have been different if I hadn’t written my letter and you hadn’t found it?"
"No, I don’t believe so," Bette held Tina tighter. She felt the blonde’s arms wrap around her waist.
"How not so?"
"Because I fell for you the minute you walked into that office after you so rudely bumped into me!" Bette said softly contemplating Tina’s lips.
She was drawn to Tina’s soft lips. She wanted to feel them on hers. She hesitated for a moment and looked up to lock her gaze with Tina’s. Her eyes glistened with the remnants of her tears. Bette leaned in and gently pressed her lips on the sore looking eyes. She felt the moisture which lingered on her eyelashes and tasted their saltiness.
The incredible gentleness of Bette’s action took Tina by surprise and she let out a small whimper at the feel of the delicate caress. She instinctively leaned into Bette further. It felt so good to be enclosed in her embrace. She rested her head in the crook of the brunette’s shoulder.
Bette welcomed Tina’s body into hers. It felt right, so right.
"Who was he?" Tina asked softly after a short quiet pause. She lifted her head back up to look directly at the woman in front of her.
"Who was who?"
"You know….. The guy who gave me your letter."
"What guy?" Bette asked intrigued. The seriousness on her face proved she was not playing any game.
Tina recounted briefly the events of the morning and how she had been handed her letter as if the young man knew who she was and that the letter was for her. She particularly recalled the moment he had literally vanished from in front of her eyes.
The two women remained silent for a few seconds, pondering the underlying allusion which hung from Tina’s words. You could have said that during those few seconds an angel had passed.
They looked at each other again and frowning in unison, shook their heads and laughed. "No… Impossible!" they spoke together.
"No…I took a gamble….I thought you might at least find one of them?" Bette offered as an explanation.
"What do you mean….one of them?" it was Tina’s turn to be intrigued.
Bette reached for the blonde’s hand which still held the crumpled letter.
"You only found one of the letters ……" she pointed to the number sequence at the top of the page, "As a matter of fact you found letter No 23 ………….. I handwrote this letter one hundred times and placed them all on the same train, the same train where I found your letter ….. I figured you must travel on that line frequently ….. so there was a slight chance you would find yourself on that train again and with a bit of luck you would find my letter!"
"Wow….one hundred letters huh!"
"Yeah…. One hundred …… and you are worth every last bit of effort"
Bette was caressing Tina’s hair as she spoke those last words. The blonde seemed to be more composed now. Her face had softened and the sadness had withdrawn from her eyes. Her emotional state had changed their colour and her normally hazel orbs were now surrounded by a light green circle.
Bette’s hand stopped its caressing action and slipped gently to the back of Tina’s neck. The blonde felt the gentle pulling action and surrendered to the silent request. Their lips met lightly at first, hesitantly but the existing knowledge of what was to come soon overtook them and the kiss deepened, slowly, perfectly, a kind of kiss which explained the undeniable connection between them.
They parted briefly, a breath between them.
"I missed you so much," Tina spoke onto Bette’s lips.
"I think, I would have missed you even if we had never met!" was Bette’s heartfelt confession.
Their lips met again for a kiss which left no doubt as to the certainty of their feelings for one another, a kind of certainty which only comes but once in a lifetime.
The End.

Great story. I like how things were resolved. :) To hand write 100 long letters is really painful. Bette should show Tina her swollen calloused fingers. :)
Oh thanks for the story.
Lovely *sigh* I am in love…….
This is a truly lovely story! Thank you for posting!
love this story and as Dainty says,we would love you to continue it,,,x
That was a beautiful story. Thank you so much for sharing it.
This was a great story. Please write more about this story or please start another. We never get tired of B&T stories. Especially, ones as good as this one. WRITE AWAY. :)_
I love your stories, I hope you have lots more, thank you so much for sharing them with us.
Beautiful story… and like Dainty said… we would never get tired of this story… thanks for this… maybe a sequel is in the making… pps

THank you thank you Wonderful wonderful update and story. And Yes! I am going to do it. :) Thank you for writing this beautiful story.
My heart was pounding as if I was pacing back and forth in the office. An angle must have delievered the letter to Tina.
“a kind of certainty which only comes but once in a lifetime” i remember this line in one of my favorite movies of all times…Bridges of Madison County
Thank you for taking the time and sharing this story with us. Can’t wait for the epilogue and anything else you may want to write!
As if! Bette wrote 100 of them?!! Wow. Amazing what love can make you do. Very beautiful ending, I loved this story it’s sad it’s coming to an end but at least you’re doing epilogue right? Anyway, SPB!
Hey! Finally caught up. Not easy to stay tuned when mom and dad decide to pay a visit! Anyway… “Wow” to this chapter! Great ending, and great (almost)final line “I think I would have missed you even if we had never met!” Encore une fois, tu as vraiment le sens de la formule! I also loved the tint of “realism” subtly masked by Bette’s grand gesture in this ending. I mean, finding your soulmate’s letter is a fateful occurence… But for this very same soulmate to find your own letter is… a plain miracle! And one that would flirt with “unlikeliness”. That’s why I love that you had Bette be smart and realistic enough to “push” destiny and leave that one hundred letters on that train. But of course, “genious you” managed to still make it a romantic element of the story with Bette handwriting those (100) letters… YOU’RE GOOD!!! Lkg fwd to the epilogue! Thanks! Kw
You really don’t need any more comments telling you how wonderful your story was, but here’s mine anyway! Really enjoyed it, thanks.
I have enjoyed this story so much..you are truly a gifted writer!
Oh Kins you had me teary-eyed from Chapt. 14 on. Having collected baseball cards as a kid I chuckled at how I mistook 23/100 as the letter’s date (although that was implied as the opening salutation Bette considered ;) …This story, perhaps more all others, has taught me so much and in more ways than you imagine. Thank you for sharing you talents through the muse of Tina and Bette – for those of us that love them, how could we ever grow bored with their story, especially when so finely written? I’m looking forward to reading and learning more from you! PS I too appreciated your use of the BOMC quote at the end
*standing ovation* 100 copies of the same letter…now that’s love. Wonderful story. One of my favorites.
:D thank you
You’re in my list!..’all I’m gonna say. Waiting for your Epi.
That was so romantic. 100 copies. I was waiting for Tina to kiss Bette’s fingers. Thanks K for bringing so much joy with your stories.
Thank you Kins40 for your wonderful story and your willingness to share it with us-your readers! :-) Hmm..?? Bored of this kind of story?? NO WAY! :-D LOL if you want to do some polling on this, please count me in! ;-) I couldn’t agree more on what Dainty said. BTW I thought the young man who gave the letter was James! :-p but still, even though the probability was higher by 100x, to have Tina got it or to let a totally strangers pass the letter to the correct person is so damn small! However, you beautifully let us believe that! :o)) LOL maybe I got those OCD streak on me so I got this kind of thinking :-p anyway, looking forward to the epilogue. I do hope you’ll share your talent again in another story in the future ;-) PPVS, thanks again!! PS: no tissue! I assume no one notice, hopefully!! LOL :-D
Thanks for this story.
Beautiful ending. I immediately went back to the first chapter to reread and savored every word. So many great moments. I loved the description that Tina had “unknowingly mistreated the pages”. The contrast between Bette having hardly left a fingerprint on her perfectly-framed and revered letter and Tina no longer able to read hers as it had been crumpled, wrinkled, cried upon, and smudged was so poignant. Your writing style is fabulous and I hope to be reading another story soon. Looking forward to the epilogue! Thanks for sharing.
I hate that it’s ending; however, love the story
That was beautiful and sweet, love the happy ending. Thanks for sharing this wonderful story with us and hope to see you soon with a new 1, thanks!
Wonderful story! Thank you.
Wonderful story, thanks
What a beautiful love story!
Fantastic chapter. You have got to be kidding us to think that we would ever tire of reading about Tina and Bette in love. All you have to do is look at the number of readers to know that that statement is not true at all. We sit and wait for you to post another chapter and still want more every time. So, if you want to keep writing this story, by all means please do so. Just know there is no way on this earth that we would tire of reading about this Bette and Tina and love every word that you write about them. I think there are several hundred that would agree with me. Loved everything about this chapter. You did a wonderful job with it, especially the last half of the last sentence, “…a kind of certainty which only comes but once in a lifetime.” I loved that line when Clint Eastwood uttered it to Meryl Streep in “The Bridges of Madison County” when he was telling her how much he loved her and had never told another woman those words. You are a true romantic. Thanks so much for sharing this wonderful story with us. Thanks for posting.
Hmmmm, last to one?! It seems K you do not have regard for my health. This seems to work vice versa. On a serious not beautiful chapter. I will be sad to see this end but; I hope this means we will still see more from you. I love the way Bette ad hand written 100 copies of her letter. That must of took forever to do, at least she never photocopied them. The guy on the subway was there for a reason; fate had brought the beauties together once, so why not let it be twice. Although it could be seen as the 3rd time fate brought the beauties together. I already know from what I’ve written on my ff. You will erm make me suffer lol. Thanks again Caramel :D
Excellent.Please continue writing.
A lovely story! I bet you write wonderful letters!!
Kins, this my second reading of this story and it finds me in tears just like the first time. What a beautifully rendered tale of love and falling into the softness of that love fully. Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful talent!!!
