The Lost Joy of Jack Henry – – Introduction

The red brick townhouse in the downtown core of Toronto was stolid as it braved the rough winters and the blistering summers. It was a new home built on an old lumber yard that one employed hundreds of men and held their dreams and aspirations as they labored to bring food and comforts to their homes. There was great history beneath that row of town homes. Men cried with their laborious pain, their disappointments, and their sweat. That townhouse held the pain, disappointment, and sorrow of one Bette Porter.

Bette Porter was serious. Bette was lost. Born and raised in the city of Toronto, she had a great love affair for her hometown. She had made her travels worldwide and she had settled within her heart to live in Toronto for the rest of her days. No one city pulled her heart strings as Toronto did. Paris was a close second. There was no second to Toronto; she was going to die here. A stubborn thought but only one man could have changed her. The prairies called her heart profoundly, but she had waited for him to call her name. He lived there in the mountains and his voice was lost in the wind, she never heard him and he became lost long ago.

He was strong, quiet and the love of her life. His life consisted of the land, sun and rain. The beef cattle that filled his pasture proved to be the only distraction in his life. He was passionate about the life he wanted. He held that dream within her heart; she had held the dream of their life in his heart. He asked her to be his wife but time and circumstance ended that romance. Gray was a man that had little to say but held great emotion in his heart. They had not spoken since their parting.

Bette wanted to get back where she felt in love and feel that passion that she lost. She had gone too far in the abyss to scratch her way back to the top. Time and distance had hardened her heart beyond repair in her mind. She neither existed for love or for life but rather for survival. She had lost hope. She had endured the recent pain of the loss of her son, the loss of her marriage, and finally the loss of her business.

Her journey was about to begin when the drink began to invade her body. Bette was a strong character but there was so much that one person can handle. This story begins on the beginning of a journey. How the element of belonging to a cycle becomes apparent. Life is comprised of a circle that has no beginning and no end, just love, hope and faith.
