The Lost Word – Chapter 7
Phyllis Kroll, Tasha Williams & Dr. Charlene Wilson
"Charlene!" Phyllis shouted with the excitement of a five year old on a sugar high. "I’ve brought almost everything you asked for and even a new patient." She let go of Tasha long enough to grab the satchel off her shoulder and then quickly took a possessive hold over her, like she was the biggest prize won at the county fair. "Let’s see," she started to shuffle through her findings, "I’ve got lots of clothing for bandages and splints, at least a dozen bottles of water…"
Phyllis paused and glanced at Dr. Wilson to make sure she was paying attention. That…and it was as if she was forgetting to mention something. If it weren’t for the plane burning in the background and countless screams for help, a pin could have been heard dropping in those brief moments of silence. "OH! And this is Tasha."
Tasha’s mouth opened and she flailed her arms out, trying to keep her balance on one foot.
Dr. Wilson ignored Phyllis and quickly put her arm around Tasha to stabilize her. "Hello Tasha," she said soothingly. "I’m gonna lower you to the ground on your good leg really slowly, okay?"
Tasha didn’t say anything, just winced as the doctor lowered her down.
Dr. Wilson could identify two different fractures just by looking at the outline of Tasha’s leg. She skimmed her hands gently down the leg from thigh to ankle.
"Phyllis? Did you find any painkillers?"
"I didn’t find any painkillers." Phyllis replied to the very beautiful Charlene, and gave a sideways glance to Tasha. "I tripped instead."
Carmen Morales
She was so out of it the whole way back. Still kicking and doing her bit to get the three of them to shore, but other than that she just wasn’t there. She was gone, off in her own world, trying to make sense of everything that was happening all at once.
Some girl met up with them when Eva finally dragged Carmen and the other woman ashore, some girl Carmen didn’t recognize. This new girl exchanged words with Eva, but Carmen wasn’t paying enough attention to make any of them out. Nor was she paying enough attention when the girl leaned down to say something to Carmen and the woman they had found in the water.
