    The Professor (8)

It had been three weeks since the decision to give Bette space, but Tina was feeling better the last couple of days. She’d kept to her word, never bothering Bette or calling her at home, and she’d even taken up drawing again to ease her own mind.

Focusing on just herself for a change, Tina liked to sit out in the hallway and sketch the arguing couples or gossiping girls that stood around in conversation. The latest picture was going well in the common area, as she sat sketching a girl who had fallen asleep on the couch. Tina had to smile as she drew it, capturing the exhaustion and owned her new, strange mood. The difference was catching.

Tina was even smiling when she got to her room later, after the sun had set. Her small dorm was decorated with charcoal sketches – all of them reminding her of Bette. They were unfinished, they were dark and interpretive, and they needed her touch.

Resting on her bed, she thought of all of the chaos surrounding her lately, and wondered just what she would do. School was overwhelming, and she was madly in love with her Art History professor.

Bette, on the other side of the city, was indulging in a little more alcohol than her usual one glass of red wine. She’d just had a visit from her ex, and the experience had left her frustrated and helpless, so she did as Helena had offered and she filled her whole glass with wine. She didn’t, however, fall victim to Helena’s apologies or attempts to be close with her. Bette simply kicked her out, but she was also struggling with the situation, and she found herself finishing the fourth glass just as there was another knock on the door. Helena had come back – she could see her through the window.

“Why don’t you leave me the hell alone?” Bette asked angrily as she pulled the door open, thrusting the wine glass out toward her ex, and then back to her own chest to take another sip of it. “Why not?”

Helena tried to ignore the tempting situation, but her eyebrow arched at how obviously inebriated Bette had become in such a short time. The alcohol always put her wife in a vulnerable state. “Because … I can see that you need me.”

    1. It’s difficult for me to understand people and their confusion over their emotions. I guess I’ve always been in tuned with mine, I just never had the opportunity to share them. However, I guess when someone is lost or feeling that way, they deal with it the only way they know how or what comes easier to them. Which is sometimes to lose themselves completely. Tina is an incredible woman and Bette needs her. Thanks GR, beautiful as always.

    2. like talaula said for me it’s also difficult to understand Bette, how she can let someone play with her emotions to affect her so much.Bette is the life that she already has and Tina’s life is the life that Bette lacks it… i hope she can see it.

    3. It’s about time you admit it Bette! Tina knows now and if she’s smart-like I know she is-she has to show Bette that she’s worth more than she thinks she is. Helena has completely destroy Bette’s self-esteem and if I were Tina I would not leave Bette’s side until she sees in herself what Tina sees

    4. Big ‘YES!’ to the Shane-tervention. Everyone needs a friend like Shane, especially Bette. I also loved that you made Bette’s dream come true–Tina holding her and stroking her back. I love these crazy knuckleheads.

    5. “God help me, I love you …” She whispered one last time, closing her eyes and breathing in next to Tina. She relaxed so that she might rest for a while longer with the beautiful, perfect student in her arms, thinking of the love she felt. And Tina breathed as though she hadn’t been awake to hear it.Just beautiful!
