    Hes dying and I havent even seen him in three years. All this time and I havent seen him. He didnt deserve that., she thought.

    The tears continued to fall as she remembered the sad tenor in his voice as she declined his last invitation. Hed wanted her to stop by so they could go for ice cream and take a walk. Shed politely refused and spent the evening in her room, pretending she had other things to do. Politely choreographed avoidance: It was the only way she could think of to protect herself from her fears and the additional pain she might encounter if those fears were realized.

    Even after the tears stopped falling and her shoulders stopped shaking, Bette still rested comfortably in the arms of her girlfriend, her head resting on Tinas chest. The grieving caramel colored woman held on tightly and listened to her lovers heartbeat, letting its gentle rhythm soothe her soul. Her heavy eyelids closed and soon, Bette drifted off to sleep.

    And when the travel agent finally called with details for their tickets out of paradise and back into a grim and sobering reality, the young lovers packed their things, checked out of the hotel, and made their way to the airport. They held hands as they stood in line to check in. And even though Bettes serenity had once again been jarred by the unpredictable dark forces of life, she smiled weakly and squeezed her lovers hand. She may have been going home to bid farewell to Grandpa Bob, but one thing was certain: she wasnt going alone and the tenderness in Tinas soft brown eyes let her know shed never have to worry about being alone or abandoned again.

    Tina felt Bettes gaze as the dark-haired beauty looked past her girlfriend, her dark brown eyes struggling to see a glimpse of anything resembling land out of the airplanes small window. The sun-kissed blonde was seated by the window with Bette in the middle and their aisle seat remaining empty. Tina noticed the far away look in her girlfriends sad eyes and gently squeezed the hand that was resting in her own.

    What are you thinking babe?, asked Tina.

    17. *happy dance happy dance* NEW CHAPTER!! What a beautiful morning! Aunt Karen’s flipped the script on Bette, just sent her head spinning. Mine too, I can’t wait for the next chapter. CANNOT wait. I’ll have to though, but I won’t like one second of it…Please update as soon as humanly possible, this story just gets better and better.

    18. OMG! I can’t believe Aunt Karen is gay beause I was thinking that when I was reading Bette’s decsription of her, but dismissed it. Too Funny! I love this story, MTS! You always seem to have a pulse on all the issues so many of us have had to face. Thanks for this long awaited update!
