    Chapter 58
The VP election was next. When her name was called, Bette wiped her sweaty palms on her tan capris and made her way to the front of the room.

“Good luck,” Sidney whispered, offering a small smile.

Bette mouthed her thanks and moved on toward her fate.

In a moment steeped in Déjà vu she looked out in the crowd and sea of smiling faces and Tina was no where to be found.

    *******

It was Tina’s intention to let the phone ring. It did. And when it finished, the answering machine clicked on.

“Hello Tina. This is Beverly Hawkins. Courtney’s mother. I uh…I’d really like to speak with you. It’s about Courtney. Please call me back when you can, my number is…..”

Time stood still. Images of Courtney’s smiling face floated around her mind. Was something wrong with Courtney? She loved that little girl and she missed her terribly.

She had to take that call. Tina raced for phone and picked it up in time to catch Beverly .

In the first few seconds of realizing Tina’s absence, a wave of disappointment flushed through Bette as she prepared to speak her first words. It was a small wave. A brief flicker of hurt that passed through her dark brown eyes.

But Sidney had seen the flicker. She had felt it. And willing as much positive energy as she could toward Bette, she smiled warmly and wished the best for her former girlfriend.

Bette quickly regained her composure. She smiled broadly and said, “Hello everyone. I’m Bette Porter. But most of you know me as the Queen of the Lesbians.”

Warm laughter and cat calls followed this statement.

The bronzed young freshman cleared her throat and her expression and tone became a little more serious.

“Though my title may be a humorous one, I assure you, my platform is not. I am a serious candidate with a serious agenda for the development and support of UCLA’s GLBT community,” she began.

Sidney sighed in relief and thought to herself, ‘She’s back. That’s the Bette Porter I know.’

Bette’s speech continued on. “I am hardworking, resilient, dedicated, and determined. These attributes were evidenced in my co-chairing the Dance Marathon and strong academic performance over the past year. I am a natural leader and have both the focus and motivation needed to carry Queer Alliance to the next level. This organization has a legacy of strong, dedicated leadership and it is my full intention to maintain the standard of excellence set forth by the leaders that have come before me.”

    1. Dammit to hell. Tina, that call could’ve waited. Seriously. And Sydney just needs to keep her hands to herself. She hasn’t done anything but think and we can read her thoughts so that’s bad enough.

    2. Jumping to conclusions is really not the best thing to do in situations like this. Bette should at least listen before she writes Tina off.I ope they talk soon and Bette doesn’t fall for the flatery from her ex. PPS

    3. I am still feeling a Sydney and Bette hook-up. I am sorry about the little girl but Tina could have atleast made it to the meeting on-time. Aside from the emergency Tina has not been there a 100% for Bette and I understand that she is not there yet. However she needs to voice her concerns to Bette and let her know what’s up, atleast then Bette would have a better understanding about it. Post soon! p.s- Please let us know when we can get your novel when it comes out. You are like one of the best writers on the site!

    4. Gosh, what do u say. Definitely want Tina to be there for the baby, but her other Baby needed her to. However, I know Bette will understand when Tina tell her because she knows how much Tina loved the little girl and she being compassionate herself, but she may not forget or forgive so easily after another dissappointing disappearing act from Tina. Thanks for another good and quick POST. Please Post Soon!!!!

    5. I hope that Bette will soon listen to Tina’s message and that they can clear up the mess. I can understand Bette’s disappointment with Tina not being there, but in this case a child’s life will always come first in my book.

    6. Tina needs to be real careful here in dealing w/ Bette. Granted she did have an emergency, but if that phone hadn’t vrang she still would’ve been late for the meeting and Bette’s speech. I’m sure Sudney, Landon and another girl who is completely out of the closet is going to start looking better and more appealing to Bette (and I can’t say that I blame her). i see a rocky road ahead for the ladies, but hopefully they can make it through the hard times and come out on top and TOGETHER! PPS! And that poor little girl she is going to have some serious issues thanks to her mommies bigotry. Too bad something so awful had to happend for her mom to see the err of her ways.

    7. i have learnt from past bitter experience that one should support one’s own 1st; imo Tina should have gone to Bette 1st…it’s not as if the nasty ‘just’ happened to Courtney…still into the story pps

    8. Hey MTS, I am still astounded by your brillance. This drama has covered so much ground. It looks like Sidney is ready to pounce on Bette and given Tina’s apparent abandonment I see this escalating quickly. Unfortunately Bette needs to trust Tina and speak to her directly. Listening to her voicemail will be a great start as I am sure that Bette would want Tina to go the the aid of an abused child. There is nothing worse in the world than a child suffering. And knowing that this is by the hand of another person makes it all the more repugnant. Just need Bette to appreciate why she loves Tina and not focus on her selfishness. Can’t wait to see how this all plays out. Many thanks for continuing to push the boundaries. Your Loyal Fan.
