    The Roommates: Chapter Fourteen

Tina wiggled out of Bettes embrace, being careful not to wake the sleeping coed. She turned on her side and looked down at Bette, watching her chest rise and fall as she slept. Tina traced the lines of Bettes face with her finger as the agony of this situation bore down on her spirit and forced a few tears from her eyes. She had never been more miserable in her entire life. Bette was what she wanted and what she wanted she couldnt have. Even if they werent already involved with other people, Bettes gender ruled out any possibility of them having a real relationship.

When did life get so complicated? she wondered.

Things used to be so simple. She was expected to like boys and then she met Eric. She and Eric were supposed to go through life together, grow old together. They talked about what their family would be like, how many kids they would have, where they would live. They were planning a future together; believing they truly were soulmates. She never expected that life would throw her a beautiful, tan-colored, curly-haired curve ball. She stroked Bettes hairline and wished for the thousandth time that this woman was hers and that things could be different.

Bette felt the light touches of Tinas slender fingers and was slowly roused from slumber. With her eyes still closed, she muttered, Hey T.

Tina smiled weakly. Hey, yourself. I didnt mean to wake you.

Dont worry about it. I feel like I owe you one anyway for what I said. Im really sorry about that., said Bette.

Tina sighed. Bette, you really did hurt my feelings. But dont apologize. You were right.

Bette heard the melancholy tone of Tinas voice and it saddened her. She had to understand what was going on with Tina. Bette leaned her head on her left hand and sat up on her side, facing Tina. T, what happened this weekend? Why are you so upset? Did you guys break up? Did he hurt you?

Tina sighed deeply, she wanted to cry but she was all cried out. She had no more tears to shed. Tina was beyond the point of hysterical crying and into the realm of detached depression. Her voice came out calm and disconsolate.
