The Roommates – Fast Forward to 2019: Chapter 8

The two versions of her seemed to battle one another. The 2019 Bette was good at distancing herself. The younger version wanted to dissolve in tears and kick things. Her life had been going so well; summer job at the Met, evoking astonishing, living with her mom, talking to her father, future godparent to her niece or nephew, and then Tina Kennard.
She shook her head, pushing away memories of days and nights with the woman who now went by the name Chris Anderson. She had loved Tina with everything she had. And despite her fears, that love had been returned. But this wasn’t the same Tina. This new Tina had her own life, her own set of 2019 baggage.
How could I think she’d meet me, and everything would just fall into place?
Bette sighed and her shoulders drooped. The thoughts seemed quieter if she were in motion. She showered and cleaned her room. She found a warm smile to give Alice when her friend picked her up for brunch at The Planet. They sat in a booth against a far wall.
“What’s going on with you Porter?” asked Alice. “What did she do?”
Bette wore a look of surprise. “What? What do you mean?”
Alice smiled at her. “You’ve got that, ‘I’m pretending to happy for Alice’ smile.”
“What?”
“I know that look, Bette.”
Bette chuckled. “I suppose you do.”
“So out with it. Is it Sidney? What did she say?”
“No, Sidney didn’t do anything.”
Bette folded her arms across her chest and leaned back in the booth. “I met someone, Alice. But it’s complicated and I think I rushed things. It’s embarrassing. I don’t want to talk about it right now. Tell me about your date the other night. Give me details. Let me live through you.”
Alice studied her. “Met someone as in a date? As in a woman? As in did you get laid?”
“Yes. Yes. And no. Continue.”
“Do I know her?” asked Alice.
Not in this timeline, Bette thought.
“No, you don’t. Tell me about Tasha. How are things? I really do want to know,” said Bette.
Alice smiled. “Very sly, Bette. Good thing I love to talk.”

I am liking Bette much better. Evidently her alternative 2019 persona was really a bitch! I like seeing Bette being considerate of her friends and offering meaningful advice. Being a friend never makes you weak, It helps to make you stronger and more desirable as a friend. It makes life easier to live.
Oh my, Tina is leaving for New York for a couple of weeks. Maybe Bette can get things settled with Sidney while she’s gone? Sidney’s show is coming up. Will Bette introduce Tina to Sidney at this show? Will Tina reveal that she is married to Henry before the show opening?
Henry is acting more possessive of Tina than someone who is just in the relationship for show. Perhaps he still believes the relationship is real and not just for show? This could get really messy.
Tina is still under the heavy influence of her parents at the ripe age of 34. She is attending church so her parents can display what a close family they are to their friends and acquaintances? Not a very healthy way to live in my opinion. Tracy seems to be just as controlling of Tina’s life as she was in 2005. To live your life based upon creating an acceptable image to others rather than who you are has to be a rather miserable existence. Time for Tina to have an in depth discussion with her parents and establish an appropriate adult child/parent relationship. But first, Tina needs to decide who she is and who she wants to be.
Excellent writing. I like the direction this story is going. Hang in there Bette. You only been in this life a couple of weeks and things are going fairly well for you. But things are about to get really complicated. And I will be waiting with bated breath to see how this goes.
I think maybe it’s a good think that Tina have a business trip to NY – they both really need time to think what they doing. Bette seems understand that she can’t use her knowledge Tina from 2005 to have advantage on this Tina.
And Tina – it’s so much more complicated. Husband + parents – obviously they very possessive and is this Tina ready to completely change her life for this Bette? I guess we’ll see.
About Max character – sorry but for me it was one of the most dull and useless character in TLW and brought in the show for only one purpose – to bring more trans audience.
Loving this story and not worrying about not quite seeing where it’s going just waiting for your delicious writing to take me there:-) !

Great chapter! Thanks for reminding me with your words that it’s Bette with the mind of a 19-year-old living the life of a grown up woman. I’d say it is totally normal for a young woman to be so intense around Tina, wanting to please her, wow her by surprising and spoil Tina with the knowledge of her favourite breakfast choices etc. .
It’s a good thing that Tina’s trip to NYC will create some distance between them. Time to breathe and enjoy this new friendship. They’ll probably stay in contact by phone. Tina can think about her attraction and what to do about it, make a decision concerning her marriage and her parents or mostly her mother.
Bette can think about how this older version of herself could court Tina without appearing too intense or even scare her off.
The Alice/Bette talk is great. Bette really can change many relationships in this “dimension” for the better. I wonder if Shane will make another appearance. Is she a good friend as well or only the girls’ hairdresser?
Looking forward to the next one
Not sure about this Tina – is she ever be able to stood against her mother and her husband if she and Bette would start something between them?
Interesting what bring her business trip to NY?
