The Sound Track of Our Lives

For the second time that night, Bette had her car parked and her head on the steering wheel. The difference was that this time she had no motivation to get out of the car.

“I should go in,” she said to herself yet she made no attempt to move. “Get your sorry ***** out of the car. You can’t stay in here forever, Porter. Get up.” She groans. “I am going crazy. Bette Porter, Yale graduate, director of the CAC talking to herself in a car. Not that I don’t deserve to be going crazy. You made you bed, now get your ***** out of the car and get to into it!” Still she didn’t move to get out of the car. She did however look up at the house. The usually well manicured yard was beginning to look a little ragged, just like Bette. Bette looked intently at the yard; she could see Tina on her hands and knees weeding the flower bed. Her blond hair pulled back in a ponytail, one strand of hair had worked it self loose to hang in front of her face. One gloved hand came up to brush it out of the way; a small bead of sweat worked its way down the beautiful porcelain cheek.

Bette closed her eyes and shook her head. Opening her eyes the vision of Tina was gone.

“What if she called? You should go in and check. OK, I will.” Opening the car door, she hurried into the house careful not to think about how empty and dark it was.  Walking to the answering machine, she found that she had 4 messages. She held her finger above the play button, “Please let it have worked”

                “First new message:

Hey, Bette, it’s James I’m just checking in. Don’t forget you have that meeting with the Lowell Tolstedt rep at 10:30. If you need anything call me. See you tomorrow.

                Next new message

Bette! Where are you? I think that maybe there is a Bette looking alike or your not so evil twin running around doing odd things. I could have sworn I saw you get up and perform a song in front of a couple hundred people at the Planet but that couldn’t have been my up tight friend.
