The Sound Track of Our Lives

The pain in her head would not go away. It pushed on the back of her eyes causing excruciating pounding. She needed to clear her head if anything was going to get done. Done? What could be done? “Well, you fucking screw up, you could have not run away. You could have stayed and asked questions,” she berated herself out loud. Now what? She was not exactly ready to go back and face Tina but she couldn’t sit in the parking lot of the sex toy shop forever. Could she? No, what she needs is a stiff drink. If she did that Charlotte would kill her. Charlotte! She fucking knew! Suddenly Bette knew exactly how to get information. She started the car as she dialed 411.

“Do you want apple or grape?”

    “Grape, please. I love grape.”

    Charlotte laughed, “I know sweetheart.”

Charlotte was having a wonderful day except for the little nagging voice; the one that worried about Tina and Bette, the one that wondered if she should have warned Bette. That would have been to betray Tina’s trust but the lie of omission is still a lie. She worried but she couldn’t let it consume her. Time will tell.

Time seemed to be working overtime today. As Charlotte walked back to the breakfast room the doorbell rang. She glanced toward the front door, sighing.

“Honey, I have to get that. Are you ok?”

    “Yes,” came the preoccupied reply.

She walks toward the double entry doors, the light streaming through the stained glass arc above the door. The rainbow danced on the tile, creating a kaleidoscope of color. Opening the door she sees a tear-stained beaten Bette. Charlotte’s smile fades. Opening her arms, she beckoned Bette into them. The broken woman did as she was told. Charlotte wrapped her arms around Bette’s waist holding her closely as she could with the glasses of juice still in her hands.

This level of intimacy surprised Bette. She soon pushed that aside just letting herself be held. Bette towered over the shorter brunette, a little unsure how to arrange herself, she wrapped her arms around Charlotte’s shoulders.

“I can’t believe I was so blind,” Bette mumbled into Charlotte’s hair.

Charlotte pushed back, still holding on, just enough so she could look up at Bette. “Everyone has been fooled. It isn’t just you.”
