The Thawing of the Ice – Chapter Eight & Nine
Chapter Eight
A brilliant smile started at the corners of Bette’s eyes and stretched downward to her cheeks and lips as she walked into her office at California University for the first time. The plaque outside the door read, "Dean Bette Porter" and that door gave way to a large, open, decorated office.
A large, three-canvas painting of the setting sun in Lyon, France hung on the right wall. The artist was one of her up and coming favorites; a beautiful young Frenchwoman named Elyse that she’d met at an art talk. If Bette had her way, she’d be able to bring Elyse to CU as a fellow. The woman was talented and cultured and would be a great asset to the university.
In the center of the room, near the back wall, stood her desk, complete with a 27" Apple monitor and an Apple laptop resting on a docking station. There was also a black leather couch and matching set of black leather sofa-style chest atop a tan and red patterned throw rug.
The office was beautiful.
Refined and artistic. Lacking only pictures of Angelica and a large scale painting to hang on the back wall.
"You like it?" came a familiar voice from behind her.
Bette turned to face her new boss. "Phyllis, it’s beautiful. How did you do all this in such a short period of time? And where in the world did you one of Elyse’s paintings?"
The blonde woman’s crisp blue eyes twinkled and she replied, "Both questions have the same answer: I have excellent connections. Care to walk with me around campus?"
Bette smiled again. "I would be delighted."
The duo took a nice, leisurely stroll, filled with introductions to professors, department heads and students. The campus itself was beautiful; built in the 1960′s the architecture was simple, yet stunning. A beautiful carpet of dark, green grass stretched across the landscape, dotted with palm and maple trees, lined with beautiful roses, colorful splashes of oleander, and neatly trimmed, dark green bushes. As they strolled down the campus square, the duo, clad in crisp, tailored suits and striking heels turned heads. Power drifted from their commanding steps and student after student greeted Chancellor Kroll and the beautiful brunette at her side.

Oh please! Don’t go there!!! Helena and Bette? There’s just something wrong about getting involved with the one who slept with your Ex, especially when it was at a bad time. Sometimes, the inter-connection amongst lesbians is just gross! LOL!!! We need someone new and utterly captivating to breathe some fresh air into Bette’s life.
Eeeks. Please let it not go where I think this is going. That is just wrong. Oh God No. (But still wonderfully detailed and written.)
Beautifully written, but PLEASE no Bette/Helena!
yessss omg this was my favorite chapter! I loveee Bette and Helena together almost as much as I love Bette and Tina together. If Bette can’t be with Tina right now then Helena it is!!! And I see a lot of talk about artists and such…pleaseeeeeeeeeee do not bring in rat face Jodi PLEASE!!! I BEG OF YOU! Anyone but her! But Bette and Helena yes :)
“Tina smiled nervously, feeling a trickle of sweat slide from her breastbone down towards her navel.”, oh what a sight to see. THUD. I agree no rat-faced Jodi in the story. Bette and Helena, that pairing may have Tina’s head explode. Though, Tina has a lot of work ahead of her if she wants Bette back. A lot of work. Awesome update.
OH NO! Not Bette/Helena, for me it’s like Bette/Shane, I’d rather read Bette/Phyllis or even Bette/Joyce than Bette/Helena !!!! freaking out !!!! Two Alphas, IMO, are bad together, but what can I say, I’m a Tibette fan so for me that’s the only match possible. Even if I favor Bette in Tibette, I have to say in Tina defense that the mess she went through was necessary for her to mature, Helena was a “rebound” and Henry a “subconscious” refuge to the hurt she still felt from Bette treason. She was discovering her true sexual identity at the same time she was experiencing motherhood (many sleepless nights when a mother nurses) and what it means to be the sole family provider. I hope Bette will, at some point, be able to see that, that she had the luxury to go in a spiritual retreat to re-ascertain her personality, she the more experienced woman, which Tina didn’t have. Thanks for your excellent writing.
I love this story…really I do, but as i was reading the Bette/Helena sections, i just keep getting a sinking feeling in my stomach. I was thoroughly enjoying this story, but if they’re gonna be a pair….i’ll have to stop.Great story though.
Hey mts and fans of mts! Thought I’d do a little advertising here. There is a thread inspired by this story for people of the lword book/fan club. It’s called “may I have an l-word with you”. It’s a place where people can discuss the show episodes characters yada yada. Awesome post and don’t forget to check out the forum. Thanks.
If Helena major in Art History and Business maybe she can teach. Better to teach than be out of work. She could problenly teach at college level. Like Helena but not with Bette, thanks
i must agree pls no bette and helena but i can see them becoming buddies both are alphas
You are a wicked woman. Wicked. Evil, maybe. You taunt me with the possibility of Belena but I don’t trust you. I have a feeling that you may be like Lucy and pull the Belena pairing away just as I, oh I mean Charlie Brown, reaches it. [imagine a paragraph break] I have been catching up on your chapters. You are a great writer and I am so happy that you have returned. The complexity. emotional honesty and realism of your story is amazing. THANK YOU for letting Bette recognize that Tina was playing with her. Thank you for letting Bette step away. I don’t know if you plan on putting Bette and Tina back together, but thank you for treating the situation with more honesty and gravitas than the show did. I am certain that you will require more than some Dan Foxworthy imitations, vague statements about making the same decorating choices and liking to live in a nice house, and some face-sitting in a stalled elevator. (Do I sound bitter?) OK. Actually, I respect your writing so much that it you wanted to do it that way, I’ll be OK. Just one teenie weensie little favor–could you have Tina’s panties be the same color at the end of the sequence as they were at the beginning? I will now sit obediently, hands clasped in my lap, and wait for your next chapter.
Belena…yuck…sorry, IMO. I’m still hanging onto the belief of Tibette and hope you make many of our smiles come to reality as you write this story. It is nice to read complexity in character (ie: Helena). To see her humanity and growth. Isn’t it amazing how growth has to come thru pain. In regards to Bette and Tina, it takes 2 people to make or break a relationship. I think you wrote in an earlier chapter that Bette “left” the relationship with Tina (emotionally before the affair with Candace). I think you made the point somewhere about the loss of their first child as a turning point in the relationship. Bette to leave emotionally and to have the affair, and Tina to turn to depression, and later to resentment/anger/vengefulness by throwing Helena into Bette’s face. Neither party did right to each other and to their love. To stay in a toxic relationship (which it was in S2) was an obvious mistake, played out in S3. Both women have to grow up and own their stuff. But, without a doubt there is love. It was there in the beginning and for many years. Finding love again and to be successful with it takes vulnerability, truthfulness, and willing to listen and talk. No attacking. No defensiveness…and time for healing. So, I am thrilled you write a story of such complexity and layers. Can’t wait to see where you take us…but you know I’m still shouting for a Tibette reunion!
i say do it…tina is fucking a man! bette and helena are both sexy women & that is way better than henry anyday of the week!
Great chapter and please as everyone has asked, NO Bette/Helena pairing that just wouldn’t go down very easily. Maybe Bette and the new artist Analisa, I dont think Bette and Helena would mesh very well. Peggy might be the only one to really like it. I had to shake myself when I read that into with them, ewwwww. Love the story though. Glad Tina is seeing the light without Bette and it isn’t a pretty picture although I am 100,000% TiBette they have to experience life without each other for a short period of time to understand what they had and are missing in their lives everyday, their soulmate. Sure hope you will bring them back together at some point for Angie and for each other as well. This is a fantastic story and I am enjoying your storytelling very much. Thanks for posting.
Excellent writing but please not Bette and Helena. Thank you for this story.
Am I the only remaining member if team HelBette/BeLena??? As friends or lovers I always thought the two were a good match having such similar professional, academic and social standards. And in this fic where Tina is demeaning and cruel to Bette I think it would serve Tina right to see Bette really move on (with whomever). Post soon b/c I like this resurging BettePorter!
Please no Bette and Helena and please no other man for Tina.Great story.Thank you.
MTS I have to hand it to you – you certainly gave us all something to talk about with this chapter. I thought Bette and Jodi would have been the worst coupling but the idea of Bette and Helena made me physically sick. I actually felt a forboding and an ache in pit of my stomach as soon as Helena opened the door to Alice’s apartment. The more I read the worst it got. For Bette to even consider a casual acquaintance much less a romance with Helena would have me nominating her for Martyrdom. No matter how you dress her up, Helena is a sleazebag in every sense of the word. She has no morals, no scruples, no conscience, no ethics, and that didn’t change when Peggy cut her off. Having the money just gave her the means to indulge in her deviant proclivities, and to buy her way out of trouble. Please show that Bette is discerning in who she associates with. A pretty face and a knowledge of art is not the only qualifications she looks for in a love interest. Can you picture Angie coming into their bedroom while they are making love and Helena tells her that children are sexual creatures and it’s OK for her to be in the bed with them while they continue. Can you see Helena giving Bette oral sex on a hotel balcony while Tina watches and the kids are in the room just inside? Can you see Bette and Helena leaving an important social function to have sex in a public pool? I wonder how forgiving Bette would be if she knew how degrading Tina’s relationship was with Helena.
Bette & Helena? Why not? Both of them are changed, matured, they seems in a better place than before.Certainly they would be a couple (or friends with benefits……) more interesting than an hypothetical Bette & Jodie like we saw on screen.Just my thought, however.
No Jodi that is great. Belena???? Noooooooooooooo!!!! please. Helena has already been with Tina please no triangle. Tina will make amend to Bette no need for another lover in Bette life who’s heart will break when Bette and Tina will be back together.beautiful writing.
This was an excellent chapter MTS! Very well written. I have to laugh. It’s clear, pretty much everyone doesn’t want a Belena paring. I have no problem with it, but maybe Bette and Analisa can get together. Can’t wait for more.
I love this story, MTS. Although not a Belena fan as a couple, I do like them as friends. It is obvious that Tina is not happy with Henry and already is turning toward Bette. Does Bette have to be with someone else before she “thaws” toward Tina? Maybe she will find in Helena just a close, intellectual friend to fill the void as Tina slowly chips away the icy wall that Bette has built between them. Just hoping. :)
They are a smokin’ hot couple. Just two stunningly beautiful women. If no TiBette then maybe HeleBette?
Hey MTS, I have just caught up wtih your last three chapters and am loving how this story is progressing.Bette is back in Angie’s life and loving it.Tina has been reminded on the Bette she fell in love with. I think Tee has to decide who and what she really wants. Henry is a good guy but doesn’t make Tina tingle when he enters a room. Solid and steady which was what Tina needed at first but the thaw is making her appreciate everything that she and Bette had.As for Bette, I loved the chat with Alice as best friends were reunited. And Kit had great news to share. Then the evening with Helena really ignited the screen. Yes, this pair do make a stunning couple and even though I am in the minority I would like to see them together. This relationship could bring out different sides of their personalities however the need for control would ultimately make them friends rather than lovers. Perhaps then Tina will have dumped Henry and could provide Bette a shoulder to cry on.Who knows where that might lead to. I think Tina needs to experience the reality of seeing Bette with someone else.MTS, you continue to amaze me with your prompt posts and fabulous fiction. Just brilliant. Many thanks from Your Loyal Fan.
Jodi ftw!!
I couldn’t even type that with a straight face… I’m just messing. Belena/Helebette doesn’t scare me half as much as forced chemistry betwixt “the fiery artist” and Bette. What I like is that Bette’s getting her life together, and Hels is portrayed as a half-decent human being. Analisa… she could be interesting, if she sticks around. So could the French artist Bette wants to bring to CU. As for Tina, the woman’s lucky to still have a job. I like that her first reaction was to phone Bette. ;) Thanks for the post, MTS! :)
First of all I would like to say that I really am a big fan of all your stories and really enjoy reading this new one.As for a potential Bette and Helena relationship, I would love to read how you would write them together. I always enjoyed reading some Belena/Helebette fics and for your story I don’t like Tina at all and I would hate to see her and Bette back together. So glad you came back and with such a brilliant story non the less. Thanks a lot.
