The Thawing of the Ice – Chapter Fourteen

    Chapter Fourteen

"Tina, what the fuck are you saying?" asked Henry, his soft blue eyes wide and filled with incredulity.

They were sitting at his shiny, formal dining room table. The room was well-decorated; exotic African artwork and masks on the walls, a beautifully woven Sudanese throw rug on the wooden floor, professionally designed lighting that made this space feel more intimate than it was. Henry was a funds manager and he primarily used the room to entertain high profile clients when he felt a little extra touch was needed to seal the deal. He’d enlisted the services of a professional interior designer to pull together the aesthetics of the room such that its design would appeal to his clients and help him reel in the big fish.

The African theme worked. It dug down into the psyche of the wealthy men that walked through the door and sat down on one of his pricey, leather-backed dining chairs. As the clients sat and talked with Henry, amid what appeared to the conscious mind as a warm and comfortable decor, their subconscious was constantly teased with images of power and wealth. As Henry outlined the returns on his portfolios, the decor was a reminder that there were rewards to be had if the investment were sizable enough.

And now, Henry was being conquered in the room he used for conquering.

Tina had not known how to break the news to him, so she’d set the stage as she did any other occasion. She cooked his favorite meal; a homey roasted beef and potatoes that he could never seem to get enough of. The scent of that meal had floated throughout the house and it had greeted him upon his return home. He’d smiled broadly and they’d sat down to the nice meal, in his designed-to-conquer dining room with filled glasses of red wine and two very different sets of expectations.

He’d been enjoying his dinner, marveling at how good everything tasted and tossing his girlfriend warm smiles and coy winks in between chews. When he wasn’t praising her culinary abilities, he was thinking aloud as to how they should spend the weekend. His five-year-old son would be arriving in the morning for his bi-weekly visitation and Henry was filled with ideas of what they could be doing together as a "family".

    1. I’m trying to work up some sympathy for Tina, but it just isn’t working. Henry called her on all her bullshit and he was right. Tina was totally punishing Bette by doing what she did w/ Henry in their home (their bedroom). And now that Bette isn’t giving her the attention she wants Tina wants her back (who doesn’t want what they can’t have???) It’s too bad that Tina didn’t give a thought to Angelica or Mike and how her decisions would effect them. So when do you get back to Bette and Helena? I agree that they are a lot alike and I’m enjoying the friendship they’ve started and hope it progresses (QUICKLY). PPS!

    2. I couldn’t stay away, this is really well written, and Tibette or Belena am gonna stick it out. I absolutely love Tina, but Kudos to Henry for calling her out like that.

    3. Gosh, Henry really did tell Tina about herself. And she realizes that she did exactly what he said and now she realizes what she did to Bette, I always thought she knew exactly what she was doing to Bette and to herself. She was so deliberate in her actions, I can hardly believe that she didn’t know and how it would affect Bette. Although I’m sad they are not together, I’m very proud of Bette for growing a pair and standing up for herself. Now Tina needs to apologize profusely to Bette for all the hurt she has caused. Bring on another chapter soon please. I want to see what happens next. Thanks for posting.

    4. Outstanding update, and switch in focus. I’m not the world’s biggest fan of Tina, but I do feel for her. She’s left a trail of shattered lives behind her, and it will do her good to think about Henry’s words, but I don’t doubt she’s suffering. Henry’s absolutely right about Tina not considering Angie and Mikey. Great update! (anything to delay B&H, LOL). PPS!

    5. Can i say that Tina deserves to be told everything henry has said? She is just hurting people on her way of searching for herself. Nobody deserves to be treated like that, and I agree with Henry this time. Tina does not consider the effect of her behaviour and decision on her daughter, ex wife or boyfriend. What is she looking for??? PPVS

    6. Thanks for the mention, MTS.€ [I am going to use symbols to separate paragraphs I greatly appreciate that your time frames are very clear. What I have realized, though, is that the differences betweeen your time frames and the show’s dramatically affect my imterpretations. € I may be the only person that thought that Tina in the show did not select a man in order to humiliate Bette. Bette’s seven year aberration comment had more to do with wondering if she had ever held Tina’s heart and if their relationship could ever been as real as it had always seemed to her. Bette also knew that Tina with a straight relationship and the possibility that Tina had never been invested in their relationship, put her place in Angelica’s life at risk. € The timing of Tina’s change of heart and returned desire for Bette in your story makes it clear that Tina’s motivation (conscious or not) was to hurt Bette. In every way she could imagine. She only had a change of heart about Angie when she saw her child’s distress at her Mama B’s absence. € I find nothing redeeming in this Tina, though I am happy to have you convince me otherwise. In one year, she used both Helena and Henry, indifferent to their feelings, just to get back at Bette. How could she ever justify those actions to herself? If she was really as clueless about her motivations as she seemed to be from her reactions to what Henry said, she’s a bit of a sociopath. [bet that will rile folks up]. My fear is that she won’t allow Bette to adopt Angelica (though she will keep dangling it) because she needs control over Bette. Bette stepped out of that game, but Tina is allowing her a lot of contact. I don’t trust that it will continue if Bette is not receptive to Tina’s advances. € I can’t wait to see if/when/how you will rehab Tina. Pretty pretty please. Keep her away from Bette for a long time. At least long enough time for Tina to work on herself. They can reunite in an assisted living facility. Just kidding. Sort of.

    7. Let’s face it, the main reason they wrote Tina going back to men is because JB was pregnant and they couldn’t come up with imaginative ways for them to be intimate in the shooting of their scenes. Their seperation was a convenient, if not completely contrived, way of copping out. As for Belena, I think they are two people who are really personally out of sorts from what they are used to (Helena without money and Bette without Tina) so there may be an attraction to their mutual predicaments. I think they could be incredible friends but as romantic partners the novelty would wane as soon as each other starts returning to their original selves. Just love your story and hope you long continue. Thanks.C.

    8. Kudos to Henry, he was spot on with his description of Tina’s actions, and glad Tina didn’t try to defend herself and started thinking about what she put them all trough. Now she really needs to take a step back and try to get herself together, and not because of her wanting Bette back or doing the right thing for Angelica, but to think about what is right for Tina. Bette already committed to co-parenting Angie no matter what, and perhaps it would be a good first step for Tina to start discussing joint custody/adoption of Angelica with Bette again. It would at least give Bette some sense of stability and trust in Tina’s intentions that she really wants Bette in Angie’s life forever and is not just using her until someone else comes along. Excellent update and also, thank you.

    9. we all make mistakes and sometimes we hurt people we love the most…bette and tina both hurt each other…maybe time apart will give them time to reflect on what happened to them and then find their way back to each other or at least that’s what i’m hoping for :)

    10. Perfectly pointed out by Henry. Tina wanted to punish Bette and used whatever means were at her disposal. She belittled and humiliated her. Tina needs to deal with her own demons and to take a long hard look at herself – and please let Bette keep her distance. I like your selfassured and happy Bette. Excellent update. Thanks

    11. Unbelievable! i never liked henry in the show mainly because in S3 he kept pushing Tina with regards to Angie but i actually like that in this story, he made Tina see things from his pov…and for telling Tina how she calls out for Bette! LoL (sad for Henry but oh well…) I still don’t like him in general. Great for Bette that she is moving on but I don’t want to see Tina jumping back into any relationship with Bette or just apologising and trying to win Bette back at this point. I hope Tina really thinks hard about fixing herself first. She is probably in a very confused place and understandably so. I know friends who start feeling lost and reacting extremely when their spouse or partner cheats of them. It makes them question themselves and it is a very confusing time. So yah, the mistakes Tina made just made her more human to me. So I hope Tina places Angie and herself first and sort herself and her life out first. If Bette is really it for her then when they are both ready, they can both work at it. Relationships are all about work and really require both parties to desire to be together for them to work. So if Bette wants to move on I hope Tina doesn’t hold her back either. Much as some might really hate Tina at this point, I don’t want her to apologise now, especially if it is just a reaction to Bette’s change. Sigh, I guess I have a very soft spot for Tina.

    12. I feel bad for Henry, but then I don’t. He knew this would happen. He knew that Tina got bored with Bette and he was just another stepping stone in her messed up life. I’m glad he called her out on her bullshit. Just as Bette moves on, Tinas got to play her games. I’m still rooting for Belena. Great update :)

    13. Ok, I just made an acc so I can leave comm on this story – I reeeally like it, a lot!! And although I’m a tibetter, please make it BELENA:))) its heading that way and please please make it different and let it work between them!
