The Thawing of the Ice – Chapter Seventeen
Chapter Seventeen
Kit’s words struck a cord with Bette. They validated Bette’s struggle and reaffirmed the importance of her new-found strength and firm footing. On Wednesday morning, an intense craving for one of Kit’s Weho-famous orange-cranberry muffins drove her into The Planet for a quick breakfast. She was dressed for work and in full, Bette Porter gear. A pair of black $350 pumps led to her toned legs. Those toned legs led to a black, knee-length skirt that fit nicely on her frame. The skirt led to a red, silken blouse that stretched to her wrists and opened down to the upper crest of her cleavage. A triple strand of black pearls, lay across her chest and a matching set of dangling, black pearl earrings hung from her ears.
Her hair was straightened and fell down her back in curls. She flipped her hair as she stepped inside The Planet and pulled off a pair of black, designer shades.
Bette smiled at the waitress behind the counter and placed an order for the signature orange-cranberry muffin and a large coffee. She’d just paid for her breakfast when she spotted Helena out of the corner of her eye.
The beautiful Brit was dressed casually in a tank top and jeans and she was talking animatedly with her hands, her beautiful blue eyes shining as she spoke. Seated across from her in the booth was a smiling Analisa Rigadro; the beautiful Panamanian woman from the art talk.
Bette found her eyes trained on Helena. Despite Bette’s efforts to resume their textual relationship, she and Helena had not communicated in any form following Bette’s lunch date with Tina. Though surprised by the sudden drop in what seemed to be a budding friendship, Bette assumed that Helena had just moved on to other things….and other women. And the wide smile on Analisa’s face was all the confirmation Bette needed to verify her theory.
Bette was suddenly in the middle of an age old dilemma.
Should she say hello or should she just scurry away? Were she and Helena even close enough for her to interrupt their conversation? She weighed the importance of their short friendship and witty text messaging against the voices in her head that told her she and Helena barely knew each other.

Thanks for the quick updates. It is such a great story. I think Bette should be cautious of her relationship with Helena and definitely text Tina NO
Oh Bette, ,,,,,,,,too many choices
I think Tina has definitely missed the boat, and Helena is looking the other way as it slips out to sea. Thanks!
Since you’re the writer you can make them do anything you want. Please make Bette want to go to the movies. :)
“As her eyes focused in on the sender of the text message, her heart rate calmed to its normal pace and her anxiety floated away. In its place was an emptiness she hadn’t expected.”This does not sound good! Bette doesn’t appear to be even remotely interested in Tina :( I mean I’m all for Tina having to atone but wow it seems like Bette really did fall out of love with her :| Emptiness? Wow…this doesn’t look good for Tina but is looking excellent for Helena…I don’t mind a Bette/Helena but only when Tina doesn’t want Bette back lol but if Tina wants Bette then Helena can’t have her! Anyway I shall continue reading and hope that Bette says yes if not just out of curiosity as to why Tina invited her in the first place…excellent post! I look forward to them every evening (well it’s evening where I am lol)
Bette, just say NO to Tina…we know how that story ends…loved the way you captured the exchange with H!! Loved the update!!
Oh dear…my heart hurts for Bette – just when she felt wanted again, her hope is crushed. But please…. (I can’t believe I’m saying this) say NO to Tina. There needs to be some serious processing……PPS!!!
I know it is too early for Bette and Tina to go back together, but Bette has to pick herself up first before engaging into another relationship. And a relationship with Helena? please save us from that please. PPVS
It really saddens me to see how everyone including Bette is so careless with Bette’s heart and treats her as if she has no feelings or worthiness except for what they can get from her. She’s like a toy to Tina and Helena. They take turns playing with her then they abandon her when something newer and shinier gets their attention. When the new toy breaks they take her down off the shelf again until next time. I said I wasn’t going to read the Helena parts and I should have kept the promise to myself because I think Helena’s treatment of Bette was pretty sh*tty. What excuse does she have for dropping Bette all of a sudden? What kind of friend/potential lover does that? If she’s ignoring Bette because she’s developing feelings for her you would hope that she’s woman enough to deal with it, and ignoring her and sleeping with another woman is not dealing with it with it as far as I’m concerned, but maybe I just have different moral standards. That scene between them (talking at the Planet) reminded me of Helena’s treatment of Bette when she went to NY for the CAC grant proposal meeting when she acted like she didn’t know who Bette was or why she was there. This is the woman Bette is pining away for? How can anyone cheer for a coupling between these two? Tina on the other hand really needs to focus on Tina. Until she can be a whole person without needing Bette or anyone else to complete her she’ll never be happy. Bette is only human and bound to disappoint again. If Tina doesn’t accept that before any reconciliation she will only end up getting hurt again or else hurting Bette. Helena and Tina don’t seem to have any problem getting their physical needs met without any emotional attachments and here Bette is holding out for ‘true love’; choosing between two women – both of whom have completely destroyed her- singularly and together. I had hope for Bette as the beginning of this story but now I’m really feeling sorry for her. She should stick to dating Angie exclusively – at least we know her lub is true and she’ll take good care of the mother’s heart.
I agree with pandp’s comment. Even if I wasn’t against Bette and Helena dating in the beginning, after Helena’s treatment of Bette in this chapter, I don’t think Helena is the right person for Bette anymore, and the same applies to Tina. You really put Bette through the ringer here, just as she sets her mind on someone and starts to feel better, she has to deal with the next blow to her self-esteem. Perhaps she really should just stick to Angie, but on the other hand, she was alone for too long and she needs a little TLC from another women. Could you please just find someone nice for her. Thanks.
MTS… my TIBETTE heart is breaking… that last line bette was thinking was a killer… like i have said bette and helena just don’t mix… they can be friends but lovers… don’t think so… (Don’t HOPE so anyway…lol)and i have been here the whole time, i read a lot at work so commenting is hard to do. (I am home now)… thx for the shout…pps
This chapter broke my heart for Bette and unfortunately this is about where she was in S4 when she met Jodi Lerner. I hope she doesn’t go that route in her desperation to feel love and wanted. Hooking up with Jodi after just barely picking herself up off the floor was disastrous so hopefully you will have some mercy and spare us. I was feeling pretty good about Bette until the introduction of the Helena friendship/love interest or whatever it turns out to be. Now I pity her, but I’m keeping the faith. PPS
I can’t believe I’m saying this but I’m all for B&H in this story.
Tnx fr update!! I agree with mette..but you confused me in what diercton story will go:)) Hope it’ll be interesting and different, actually no doubt about that!
I have been sighing after every chapter but I have faith in Tibette and I will follow this journey through. Thanks for sharing MTS!!
Hey MTS, More pieces of the puzzle appear however the picture still isn’t clear. It is obvious to all that Bette and Helena are attracted to each other and yet so fearful of making a move.I am not sure if this is because they have both been hurt in the past, the Tina factor, or they are afraid of spoiling the start of a beautiful friendship. I would like to find out where this journey could lead as two alphas together make a powerful combination however there is just a little niggle that compromise is not part of their make-up and would lead to quarrels further down the line. This could be the prompt to gee Tina into chasing Bette and following her dream reconnection with her former partner. Angelica needs her parents to be happy in their lives and I want this family together.MTS, you are being so coy and evasive about this story. I love that. Follow your vision and tell the story your way.Thank you so much,Your Loyal Fan.
Bette go to the movies. Let’s start on working back together with T.
bad timing for Tina, neither of them are ready for that yet but what made me sad the most is how Bette felt when she realized the text wasn’t from Helena. Emptiness is there when there’s no more feelings left at all, and i have a feeling you’re going to make tibetters pretty sad with this story, i just hope you won’t make Tina a villain just to make Belena more plausible
