The Thawing of the Ice – Chapter Three
Chapter Three
Bette swam for nearly three hours that evening.
Breastroke.
Backstroke.
Breastroke.
Butterfly.
Breastroke.
Backstroke.
Repeat.
Something about the crispness against her skin made her feel as though she was being reborn.
Renewed.
Changed.
She only stopped swimming when her tired eyes spied a pair of familiar skinny legs standing at the edge of the pool.
Bette swam to the edge of the pool and Shane squatted down in her black jeans and thin, white-soled sneakers.
The older woman was out of breath as she held herself against the pool’s ledge.
"I’ve been watching you for a while. Thought you might be hungry," said Shane with a sad smile that failed to reach her eyes. She was holding up a bag of food from a nearby boutique sandwich shop.
Bette studied her friend. She hadn’t seen or heard from Shane McCutcheon since the younger woman abandoned her bride-to-be in Whistler. Bette finally nodded and breathlessly asked Shane to hand her a nearby towel.
"Thanks," she whispered, covering her body with the long, soft, blue material.
Still wrapped in the towel, Bette sat down at a small patio table. Shane joined her, removing a sandwich, bottled drink, and side of mixed fruit.
The sun was beginning to set and a mixture of soft oranges had begun to streak across the sky.
"I didn’t realize I’d been in the pool for so long. It was bright and sunny when I first came out," Bette remarked.
Shane’s eyebrow wrinkled. "What’s going on with you? You looked like you were swimming for your life."
Bette eyed the logo on the bag of food before glancing back up at her friend. "And it looks like you are avoiding yours. Didn’t go the ‘The Planet’?"
Shane shook her head and looked away. "No."
Bette sighed and patted her hair with the towel. "Shane, I’m not going to judge you. You didn’t want to get married. There was a lot of pressure. I get it. I just…above all, I want you to be happy. It seemed like Carmen made you happy."
"She did. I don’t know. I just….panicked I guess," Shane replied.
The older woman nodded and held up the carefully wrapped sandwich. She was suddenly much hungrier than she’d been in days. "Do you mind if I go ahead and eat?"

Thanks for getting back to us so quick! PPVS!
Really enjoying this story.
Love it! I have no idea where you’ll be taking us, but I’m settling in for the ride. PPS!
Dang this is good! Thank you for posting so quickly!
Love this story, and I’m still hoping somewhere down the road Tina will cool off and reunite with Bette. The 3 of them belong together. Can’t wait to see where you take us next. Thanks!
A wonderful story, beautifully told.
Seems as though Shane is about to be on a misson. Maybe with a few phone calls and some tall talking she might be able to turn a few minds around. At any rate she is certainly hellbound to fix something. Hopefully Tina will listen to her. The update was grand. Thanks for posting.
Great update.PPS
Hi MTS, Many thanks for another fine update. It was wonderful to have the love and understanding between Bette and Shane brought to the fore again. These gals just understand each other and never judge the other’s actions.I love the sounding board aspect of their friendship.I do get the sense that Bette is ready to move on with her life and allow Tina and Angelica the same freedom.Bette’s advice to Shane was well measured and honest. I think that there will be tough times ahead but am ever hopeful of a Bette and Tina reunion. These two are just soul-mates and belong together for themselves as well as for Angelica.More please whenever you can as I am totally addicted.Just perfection in words.Your Loyal Fan.
