The Triangle of Love – Chapter 3

When Dana arrived home, the lights were off and the door was locked. She figured Lara must be on her way home, as Danas walk home took longer that she thought. She unlocked the door and wondered inside, closing the door behind her and dropping her keys into a small bowl at the side of the doorframe. She sat on the couch and waited for Lara. 5 minutes later, the door opened and in walked Lara.

    Lara: Dana?

    Dana: Yeah?

Lara: When did you get home?

Dana: Oh you know an hour ago or so.

    Lara: Oh, really?

    Dana: Yeah…

Lara: Then why isn’t the TV on? And why do you still have your trainers on?

    Dana: I was thinking.

Lara: About? And why did you ignore me at The Planet? And my phone calls? What’s going on with you Dana, and why won’t you be intimate with me?

Dana: Lara, come sit down. We need to talk.

    Lara: Okay…

Lara took a seat next to Dana, while giving plenty of space between them. She looked in Danas direction and waited for her to begin talking.

Dana: Look, you know I love you, right?

Lara: Yeah Dana and I love you, so what’s the problem?

    Dana: Erm… I’m not sure how I feel. It’s… I think… Erm…

Lara: Just spit it out, Dana.

Dana: Lara… I don’t think I’m in love with you.

    Lara: What? Since when?

    Dana: Since… I don’t know. I don’t know if I ever was. I’m sorry.

    Lara: Is there someone else?

    Dana: No.

Lara: I don’t understand. So you led me on?

Dana: No. You’re a wonderful girlfriend and I do love you but it’s not enough. You deserve better.

Lara: NO! I don’t want better, Dana. I want you. You’re the best girlfriend I’ve had; you’re smart, funny, beautiful and caring. I couldn’t ask for anyone better if I tried.

Dana: You’re all those things too, Lara. But I don’t get the butterflies anymore. My pulse doesn’t quicken anymore when you walk through the door. I really think we should break up. I’m sorry.

Lara: No Dana, you’re not getting out of it that easily. I deserve a better explanation than that.

Dana: I don’t know how to explain it.

Lara: The least you could do is try, you owe me that much.

Dana: I know. Can we talk about this tomorrow? I’m a little tired and I want to be fully alert when we do talk.

    Lara: Fine. Goodnight.

Lara got up from the couch and made her way to the bedroom. After changing into a tank top and pyjama bottoms, she dropped onto the bed, rolled over to lie on her side and tried to fall asleep, even though the tears were now falling heavily. Around 10 minutes later, she heard the bedroom door open. She knew it was Dana but right now she didn’t want to be anywhere near her. As she felt the bed begin to move, she knew Dana was climbing in.

    Lara: Get out, Dana.

    Dana: What, why?

Lara: Are you serious right now? There is no way you’re sleeping in here.

Dana: Where am I supposed to sleep?

Lara: The couch? I don’t know and right now I don’t care. I don’t want you near me Dana. Go away.

Dana: Okay. I’ll sleep on the couch. Goodnight, Lara.

    Lara: Yeah. Night.

Dana gathered up her pyjamas so she could change in the bathroom. She grabbed the spare quilt from the storage cupboard in the bedroom and gathered up a few small cushions to act as pillows. She stretched her body out on the couch before curling up into a ball, trying her best to drown out the sobs coming from the bedroom.
