The Very Thought of You, Chapter 13
She stood smiling at me, grinning really, her smile lighting her eyes, crinkling the corners. Her eyes moved constantly, trying to pull me in, absorbing every detail. The smile changed, turned to a smirk, as she stuck out her hand.
“Bette Porter.” Laughing, I took her hand, trying not to show the effect it produced in me.
“Hello. Tina Kennard.” She joined my laughter, offering me her arm.
“Come on.”
“Where are we going?”
“I don’t know. Let’s walk.”
We made our away over to the boat pond, watching the remote control boats transverse the small, open water. The first fall leaves rustled as a breeze picked up, lifting her curls and exposing her neck. I watched her for a moment as she closed her eyes and inhaled the rich autumn scents, a smile twitching the corner of her mouth. Before I could turn away, she opened her eyes, turned, and smiled at me, causing me to pause and totally lose control of my joy as I returned her enraptured expression.
We made our way out of the park as arm-in-arm we walked through the city that never sleeps. We easily chatted as we had on the phone, stealing glances, exchanging shy smiles. We made our way to Times Square, crowded with the midday traffic. We occasionally stopped to peer in storefronts or gaze at some oddity or another, a street performer, an argument, a worker trying to hype people into a comedy club. She pointed out interesting architectural aspects of some of the older buildings, gazing in awe at the Shubert Theatre, her favorite, she soon informed me.
We continued onto 41st Street, finding a table in Bryant Park. We sat for a moment, just taking in the few remaining deep greens, the reds and oranges of the abundant trees. Two old men sat playing chess at a table, occasionally playfully exchanging verbal challenges. A couple of boys tossed a baseball easily in an open space towards the center of the park. A young girl dragged her mother towards a stranger’s puppy, the people, if only for a minute, forming a connection in this at times unfriendly city. A smaller, less meaningful version of what we were trying for, I guess.
I turned back to find her watching me take in the life of the city. The corners of her mouth twitched for just a second before she quickly raised her hand to her lips to hide her grin. There was only a slight pause, a moment of awkwardness, before the conversation picked back up. We started with light things, on pets, classes, friends. Friends led to family, and she soon was talking about her sister, almost bursting with pride at her many talents. It surprised me; she had told me they didn’t get along, that her friends were her family, but it was apparent that some sort of sisterly feeling existed. From her honest feelings about her sister, we moved to more serious matters. Our bizarre meeting. Our friendship. Today. She sat back and regarded me with disbelief, tucking her hair behind her ear. She gently shook her head. I waited as she hunted for the right words, watching her searching for them. She finally found them.

I wasn’t looking for you to make me feel bad about being a dork! lol =p This sucks man! Not the story, but that we know what will happen yet it’s like a car wreck in that you can’t help but looking at it. Okay I swear that was supposed to be a compliment but it came out weird. I’m gonna go now. *slinking away slowly*
You know, you’re such a amazing writer, I bet you would write the hottest sex scene ever! In fact I’d bet some money on it :) Seriously! I just finished reading you last chapter and noticed this new one! You are indeed amazing aren’t you- I can’t believe we get another chapter so quickly. Great post. PPS and just keep doing that great thing that you do.
slowwwwwwwwwwwww torture….holding hands??? holding hands??? is that all we, I mean, they get???? lmao…hurry on….
Two pages… and they were great, amazing to find they are as enchanted with one another in person as they have been in communicating.
love it!p.p.s.
Wow, NY, wonderful chapter, yet again! Loved it. Favourite line: “Do you feel that?”… “What?”… “Contentment. Completeness…” Beautiful. Do post again soon. And you said thanks for reading- babe? the pleasure is all mine :D PS: in your shout-out to jp22, you wrote ‘love at first *site*’! Intentional? or a Freudian slip? Heheheh
Wow… total Freudian slip… but now I have to leave it, of course…
I agree with Lamentamini, it’s a shame we know it didn’t work out. Hey New Yorkers are always friendly, we’re just cautious and suspicious as well — so says the ex-NYer (LOL).
Another great chapter as usual. Keep it up, and please post soon.
It so sad but very sweet. If I felt like that about someone. I would care if I had to sleep under a bridge.I would try to be with them. I a firm believe that any age you can be happy I like it thanks
what a truly amazing story.. can’t wait for more.x.x.
Amazing writing. The words just sing. NY has the best of everything. You know what they say? When you leave NY, you ain’t going anywhere.
The feeling of inexorable heartbreak is almost suffocating, and yet I can’t stop reading. That’s a testament to your writing, NY. Lovely chapter.
Yes Ny, I am now happy that you have admitted to what we already knew! lol It was only a matter of time, babe! I am glad that they have met. There is a part of me that wants to fast forward and see why this did not work, but I still love the torture…lol! I hope you have fun tonight!
I keep saying the same thing. I love this story, but at the same time it makes me so sad and depressed. We know at this time at least, Tina has chosen safety, and what was expected of her over true love. Thus from what you have told us, her life though content is empty without her other half. I’m sure in time you will inform us of Bette’s life since obviously Tina didn’t take the journey with her.
Hey NY,I agree with you about this story not needing an NC-17 chapter. You have a way with words that is just wonderful. Keep writing this story the way you have because it is perfect. Thanks once again and yes will be in touch soon, my friend.
I am so glad Tina finally got on that train…I am sad cause this is a flashback and we know she or they didn’t follow their hearts. But you can right whatever wrong they did and YOU can bring them together again and only YOU can prevent forest fires…lol…sorry a little Smokey The Bear there…back to the story….we need more.
Hi NY. Aaaahhh, they finally meet. I loved the meeting so far… Oh, the bliss of having Bette wait for you anywhere really… Of course you don’t need NC-17 chapters for this story… or any story – not when you are capable of writing like you do. Like I said, I’ll read no matter what rating your stories have. Thanks, NY.
