Things We Would Like to Forget

    Chap. 11

The police officer slammed the door and climbed in the driver’s seat. Shane studied her surroundings. The officer had to be a detective because he drove an unmarked car. The passenger seat was cluttered with styrofoam coffee cups and doughnut boxes. Shane sighed and leaned back in her seat. Her thoughts raced in her head, but on the outside she was the picture of calmness. It took them 10 minutes to get to the police station. He hauled her out and walked her to his desk. She was finger printed and thrown into an interrogation room. Another male officer came and sat across from her. “Shane, do you know why you’re here?” She shrugged and stared down at her hands. “I want my lawyer” she said through gritted teeth. “and my phone call” The officer nodded. “In due time. I just want to ask you some questions first.”

    “No. Not without my lawyer”

“Did you kill your father?” He asked ignoring her request. Just then Shane’s lawyer walked in. “What is going on here? Didn’t my client ask for her lawyer?” He said enraged. “I want to get out of here” Shane said angrily. “Helena posted bail, we’re leaving.” Shane followed her lawyer out of the police station. “How did Helena know I was in jail?”

“Carmen told her and she called me.” Shane shook her head and got in the lawyers car. He dropped her off at her house and Shane came in the door exhausted. Carmen ran to Shane and hugged her. “Oh my God, what are you gonna do?” Shane shrugged and headed to the kitchen for a beer. Carmen followed her and wrapped her arms around Shane’s waist. “You scared me chika” Carmen whispered in her ear. Shane slowly turned around and took a deep breath. “Carmen… I … want you to know that… I love you. Carmen took Shane’s hands in her own . “I love you too” She said kissing Shane. The couple retired to bed early.

Shane awoke to an empty bed and the sounds of Carmen in the kitchen, making breakfast. Shane took her shower and entered the kitchen in a good mood. She popped the top off a beer and gulped it down. “The breakfast of champions”, she said kissing Carmen on the cheek. Shane stuffed fork-fulls of egg in her mouth. “Are you in a hurry?” Carmen asked. Shane nodded vigerously. Yeah I’ve got an early client. She kissed Carmen and hurried out of the door.” I love you” she yelled back to Carmen. Shane hopped in her truck and sped away. Shane felt her phone vibrating. When she saw it was from Cherri she tossed it in the back seat. Shane arrived just as her client did. “Hey Callie” she said, greeting her. “Hey Shane” she said giving her a peck on the cheek. Shane got so into her work that she didn’t notice Alice standing and watching her work her magic. After Callie left, Alice hopped into Shane’s chair, spinning it around like a two year old. “What’s up” Shane asked Alice patiently. “I’m writing a story for L.A. magazine about you” Alice gushed. “Alright!” Shane said hi-fiveing  Alice. “Well I guess I’ll take the rest of the day off.” They jumped into Alice’s car and sped towards the beach. They lit up and spent the rest of the day swapping stories. Shane walked into the house just as Carmen was heading out. She gave her a quick peck on the cheek and hopped on her bike. Shane wondered around the house looking for something to eat. Shane decided to order a pizza. When the pizza arrived, Shane’s jaw dropped. It was one of her old girlfriends from high school. “Hey Kimi! It’s been awhile.” She gave her a hug and invited her in. “When did you move here?” Shane grabbed two beers from the fridge and tossed one to Kimi. “How are you doing?” Kimi asked. “I’m good; no I’m great. I umm I’m actually seeing someone. Shane looked curiously over at Kimi who seemed to be unbuttoning her top. Shane immediately saw what she was doing and got up to stop her. Carmen walked in just in time to see Shane fiddling with the buttons on the woman’s shirt.
