    This is My Family…Chapter 39

Bette realizes that she has developed a kind of obssesion with food. Not with eating food, her waistline hasn’t changed…but it seems she can’t stop thinking about it. During the minutes she is not doing something and a spare moment rushes to her head shopping comes to mind, shopping for food. Angelica can hardly keep up with the meals, of which Bette has become quite adept at preparing. The cupboards are filled with large ziploc bags full of dry pasta and spices and cereals, cans of pickled apricots and garlics, cans of tomatoe sauce etc. The fridge is filled to the brim with potatoes, celerary, carrots, milk, eggs, tortillas, food food food. Bette has come to love walking into a fresh grocery filled with aisles of different ingrediants, different kinds of food. She takes pleasure in feeling every fruit in the bins, choosing the best one, her eye becoming sharper at picking out the bruised ones the ones which has become rotten inside. Bette likes the chill of the dairy section, likes looking at each brand of milk….contemplating on whether to try out soy out. She always decides against it and instead buys skim, fatty but who cared. Sometimes she gets distracted. Sometimes Bette looks up from weighing pineapples and nectarines and sees an entire family shopping all together. One time it was a large Aboriginal family, all beautiful with black hair and caramel skin. The man had a huge potbelly and his wife was impossibly thin. Two teen children were dressed in the way teens dressed, not quite out of childhood but defiant of all things adult. They stayed as a group, and seemed to find everything funny. Their guffaws made heads turn and lips curl into a smile. It made Bette’s heart ache and memories flooded her head as she poked peaches to see if they were squishy.

Like how Bette and Tina laughed. She thought of them together, just laughing. It was one of the best things about being in a relationship where one was very comfortable with the other, when both had seen other at their worst and best. Usually they had their laughing abouts in bed after a hard working day…too tired to make the effort of ***** instead they  made fun of people. Bette would clutch the sheets and lean back into the pillow laughing so hard as Tina impersonated neighbours, T wiping tears from her eyes as Bette did her best Woody Allen spiel. That was all it was. Laughing….laughing together. Always together…even when they were apart Bette could feel her connection to Tina…and the laughing they did together only strengthened that bond.

    1. i know this is hard, and your feeling of deep loss will be there for a while but you gotta help yourself Bette….slowly but surely, little steps towards the future. As they always say, life goes on! she was, she still is and she’ll always be Tina, no one could ever replace her in your heart and life but you have to remember you’re still alive…and Angie’s still there!

    2. Bette is really keeping things together. Is she just pushing it to the back of her life or really dealing with it though. Interesting that she has focussed on food for her obsession – that’s what Tina did wasn’t it – yeah thought so.
