    Tina Chapter 1

Tina stirred at the sound of her alarm clock. She wondered why she even bothered, as she was having trouble sleeping. Nights were restless times. It was the darkness and her thoughts from which there seemed no escape. Lack of sleep was taking its toll. It has been three months since she moved out of the house and she is still not used to this new bed, new place or new life.

Tina dragged herself out of bed, knowing she would need the extra time to get ready for her appointment with Chris. Sleep deprivation took time to hide in the makeup mirror.

Shuffling in the kitchen, Tina was startled by an already awakened Alice.

Hey!, Alice was chipper and fully awake

    MorningTina mumbled.

Do you know how early it is? Alice asked Tina.

Yes, which is why I am surprised you are up.

Early morning interview , Alice responded. Tina, are you meeting with Chris today?

Yeah. It looks like he has a project for me Tina looked at Alice, half smiling.

Hey, Alice voice was muffled by bagel hanging out of her mouth. I got you the clothes you needed. They are in my bedroom.

    Thanks Al.

She was asking lots of questionsAlice arched her eyebrow and looked coyly at Tina

    Really. Hm.. Tina muttered.

She got a little tense when I asked where your Prada pumps were. Alice said with a hint of wickedness in her voice.

Tina simply looked up and shrugged her shoulders. Sometimes it was just better to listen to Alice and not feed her any more information.

Alice strolled by Tina, a cup of coffee in her hand, and playfully pinched Tinas rear with her other hand. Tina jumped up and laughed

Over the past three-months, Tina and Alice had become close. Alice loved having Tina live with her. Its been like having a sister around. Alice knew it wouldnt last, as Tina has been talking about getting her own place. That was just one of the questions on Tinas mind these days. She is so full of questions. Bette has been relentless in trying to talk to Tina, get her to move back into their house, but Tina has to this point been unresponsive. Watching this play out, Alice couldnt help but be amazed by the total transformation in the relationship. Alice had never seen Bette so needy and watching Tina call the shots was a new experience. All Alice was sure of was that she loved them both and was praying they could find there way back to one another somehow, someway.

Walking into her old office building, Tina felt a sense of familiarity, which gave her comfort. She was met by her old friend Jim, the building security guard with a big bear hug. It felt good to be back here.

Walking into Chris office, she felt stronger than she had in months.

Welcome back, Chris walked across his office to hug Tina. You look great.

God, it is good to see you, Tina smiled widely, How have you been?

Great. Incredibly busy, but great. Chris crossed his office, motioning Tina to have a seat. Weve missed you.

    Thanks.

So, you want to come back to work? Is everything ok Tina?

Tina shifted in her seat, Well, you know Chris, sometimes the best plans dont work out. Things have changed for me and I need to get back to work. I appreciate you helping me out.

You are the one helping us out Tina, Chris said. We have work. Too much work and could use you desperately.

Tina? There was a bit of hesitance in Chris voice. Hows Bette?

Tina knew the question was coming. She had prepared her response, but now that the moment arrived, she was at a loss for words. Tina simply smiled, and said softly, Were not together anymore.

Chris stood up and crossed the room sitting on the arm of Tinas chair. Taking Tinas hand in his, Chris gently smiled, Im sorry Tina. You know, whatever is going on with you, you can always count on being welcomed here. Whatever you need let me know. I will help as much as I can

Tina felt a sense of warmth for Chris, who had not only been her boss, but also her friend. She held back her tears and was grateful when Chris got up and changed the conversation back to work.

Tina left Chris office with all the information she needed to begin working on the project. They were not expecting a call from her until Monday, so Tina had the weekend to herself.

Walking down the street, the day seemed a bit brighter She now had work, something to fill her time, and make her self-sufficient like she used to be.

Tina walked down the street to her car feeling like she was returning to the person she used to be. She was in a good mood. Even the catcalls she received from the men at the construction site were amusing today. She thought how long it has been since she truly felt desirable. Wanted. Attractive. Too long she thought as she rounded the corner to her car.

Feeling hungry, Tina stopped at the Planet for lunch. Just the fact that her appetite was returning made Tina feel like she was starting to gain control of herself again. Eating had been last on her list the past three months and it showed.

Hey! Alices voice reached Tina from across the room as she waved her hand for Tinas attention.

Walking up to their table, Shane stood up and pulled a chair out for Tina to sit.

You look great Tina, Shane muttered sitting back in her seat.

How did it go? Alice inquired. Are you back on the working stiffs team?

Yepand happily so, Tina answered with a smile. Chris had a small independent film he needs someone to work and it fit me perfectly. It looks to be some sort of FAME remake, but who knows. With these small films you never know what the product will be. It looks good and I am happy to be working

Well, that makes one of us, Alice groaned. You should have seen my interview this morning. What a snore

Marina walked up to their table, handing Tina a cup of tea.

Hey stranger. Havent seen you in a while. You look great. How have you been?

Im good Tina replied, nodding her head while smiling.

You want the usual for lunch? Marina asked.

    Yeahthat would be great

So Al what was the problem with your interview this morning? Tina asked, sipping her tea.

Alice began her tirade about her morning interview, when her voice suddenly changed and she became distracted by someone at the counter.

Tina turned her head to see what Alice was looking at and met Bettes eyes dead on. Bette held her gaze for a moment and began walking towards their table. Tina shifted in her seat, determined to hide any anxiety or nervousness she felt.

Hi guys, Bette said standing directly behind Tina.

    Hey Bette, Shane answered stoically

    Hi, Dana responded.

Reaching down, Bette laid her hand gently on Tinas shoulder, Can I talk to you for a minute? Outside?

Alice smiled and nodded her head at Tina.

Tina hesitated, unsure of what she wanted, but agreed to go.

Tina got up and walked outside, feeling Bette following behind. Tina felt grateful Bette caught her today, while she was dressed for her appointment and feeling more confident than she had in weeks. Even so, Tina still felt a tightness in her stomach in Bettes presence. She was uncomfortable.

The two women stood outside the Planet, looking at one another, a feeling of discomfort hung between them.

You look great, Bette said in a soft tone

    Thanks

Alice mentioned something about a job last night. Howd it go? Bette asked, her voice filled with curiosity.

Good, Tina nodded her head. Real good. It is a smaller project, but it is a start. I am grateful Chris had work for me Tina answered Bettes question, looking directly into her eyes, never breaking her stare.

Tina, you know if you need anything.

Tina quickly interrupted Bette, No Bette. I already told you I do not need your help.

Bette was taken aback by Tinas strong reaction to her offer. She felt stung and took in a deep breath to keep herself composed.

Look Tina, Bette sighed, we need to talk. I need to talk to you. Can we have dinner? Or will you come by the house, or I can come to the apartment? However you want to do it, I just need some time to talk to you

Tina thought about Bettes request. There were thoughts in her mind she wanted to express. Things she did need to say, but she felt unsure about being ready for this conversation.

Maybe we can meet for drinks or something, Tina sounded unsure.

Public place huh?, Bette said, raising one eyebrow

You know Bette, honestly, I dont know if I am even ready for that, Tina said exasperated.

No. Wait Tina, whatever you want, that will be fine. Bette said reaching out to slide her hand softly down Tinas arm. I want whatever you can give. Bettes voice trailed to almost a whisper.

Tina shifted slightly so Bettes hand moved off her arm.

How about Saturday night around seven? Bette asked, Maybe we can get dinner too.

No. Not dinner. Lets just meet at Milk. We can go around eight, that way it wont be too busy.

Bette felt disappointed they werent meeting at a more private place, but she didnt want to push, being that this was the farthest she had gotten with Tina in months.

Can I pick you up? Bette asked.

No, thanks. I can meet you there, Tina responded

Bette looked directly at Tina, not wanting to let this conversation end. This was tearing Bette apart, not being able to touch Tina, hold her hand. Tinas movement away from Bette tore through her like a knife. This was all new territory for Bette and she was in no way prepared for any of it.

I need to get back to my lunch Bette. I will see you Saturday.

Tina turned and walked away, going back into the Planet. Watching Tina through the glass, Bette felt surreal, unable to comprehend what was happening.
