    Tina — Plan B; pt. 67

I realized that I was wiping my hands on my pants. Again. Who knew that palms could sweat so much?

I’d compare how I feel to how a teenager feels, but my teenager seems to have some unnatural level of confidence. I know most of the time she’s faking it, but that’s a skill she certainly didn’t get from me.

There. Right before me is the goal. The phone. All I need to do is pick it up and dial.

    Easy.

Easy if I were calling anyone but Bette Porter, that is.

This is like trying to overcome a fifteen-year-old mental block. So many times I wanted to just pick up the phone and call, just to hear her voice. Just to know that we could still have a connection.

Now she’s here, and somehow, it’s just not so easy.

I consider going to the kitchen for another cup of coffee, but I really don’t think that it’s going to help. Not as strong as I made it this morning.

Perhaps because yesterday was so tiring. Perhaps because I want to be jolted back to reality.

I was jolted yesterday, that’s for sure. I’m not sure exactly what came over me. But it was Bette, and me, and for the briefest of moments, it was us.

How many times in a lifetime can we create an us? Do we have a limited supply? Is forever possible.

Perhaps I should start drinking something stronger than coffee.

    No. I can do this.

I think of what I did yesterday. Where did I find that courage? Fatigue and hormones, perhaps. But something about Bette, just waking, vulnerable.

    Something about Bette.

That’s it. Sucking in a breath I picked up the phone and dialed. She answered on the second ring.

Part of me wanted to hear her voice mail message. Something safe.

    “Hello?”

She had answered. C’mon Tina, you can do this. “Bette?”

    “T.”

I hear her smile, and it makes me smile in return. “I was wondering if you had plans for the day.”

Hesitation. I sense it. My flight reflexes are moments from kicking in.

    “Well.”

C’mon, Bette. Let me down gently.

“I had planned what Jess would label a ‘creepy building search.’”

“Oh.” Disappointed? Perhaps. But what did I expect? That once I banished her yesterday that she’d just sit contentedly waiting for my call? Although I must admit, she did answer quickly.

“Would you like to join me?”

    What?

“If you don’t have work, that is,” she tacks on quickly.

“I took the day off work.” The words blurt out on their own.

    “Really.”

Now I hear something else in her voice. Not quite the same open smile. More of a grin. A look of satisfaction.

“Yes, really. I deserved it and I thought, perhaps, we could spend some time.” I feel my ears burn as a blush rises on my face. I’m not sure how I’m presenting this, but given my actions yesterday, I can only imagine what Bette might be imaging.

At least I hope we’re imagining something similar.

While I’d like to say I feel like a teenager, if my daughter acts like this, she’s grounded until she’s forty.

“Tina, would you join me as I examine only the best of Los Angeles‘ selection of creepy real estate?”

Well when she puts it like that.

    “Please?”

    A lone word. Plaintive. Dependent.

Yet again, she makes me melt. “Of course.”

“Can I come by to pick you up?”

“At your leisure.” Why not join her game.

“My appointment is later this morning, so I’ll be over shortly.”

    “Ok.”

Both of us are still on the line. Neither one wants to be the one to end things.

“Bye,” she whispers, finally. The call clicks to a close.

“Soon,” I whisper back. And I know she heard me.

    1. The question mark always gets me going…

Three main characters – Bette, Tina and Jess
Creating semblance of order, from what once was a mess
Could they solve such chaos, left to their own devices?
Examine precedent my friends, their lives always in crisis
Left in the capable hands of the one we call ‘pseud’
I have confidence that her story will happily conclude
As we travel this path of the characters’ re-acquaintance
Thrown in is the confounding factor of Jess’s adolescence
Their words jump from the page, written with precision
When I see you’ve posted, there is no decision
I schedule a break at work, or my dog’s walk can wait
I must find out where you have next sent their fate
I thank you for the time you have committed thus far
And only hope the show’s writers become less bizarre
I’d suggest they take lessons from the skill you display
The depth of the characters you so deftly portray
A request that you continue, consider this verse
An end already? In fanfic land, I can’t think of much worse

    2. I’m not quite sure why it is that I never read your story before, I just never did, then one day over the weekend, I read 2 of your Plan B stories , chapters in the 60’s, and got interested, so I decided to go back to the beginning, and so I did!!!

Wow, what I was missing! This is such a great story and I love that each chapter is defined by a different voice. Do you have kids, because Jess is so dead on as a teenager…I really laugh when it was her chapter. I also like how we see different perspectives on the same scene…interesting.

The coolest thing for me was that I was able to do a read through, stopping only for substance. Sadly, I now must wait, with the reat of your fans, for you to put forth another chapter. It’s like someone gave me a novel and tore the last couple of chapters out…I got into such a groove of reading the story, that when I could no longer click “Next post by this author” I found myself getting a little annoyed.

So pseud, I implore you to get to writing, I must see where this story ends! But feel free to draw it out as long need be.

Just a few other thoughts…When It All Became…do you plan to revisit that, or are you finished with it? I sort of liked that story, (when I said I went back to the beginning, I mean I went through and read everything!) the way you were able to weave the present with the past, I very much enjoyed that. Perhaps when you finish Plan B, you might be able to go back and play with that for awhile…just some thoughts!

Love your work and glad to have another favorite author!!! Thanks for your time and effort!!! :-) You rock!

    3. That was such an insight into Tina’s feelings. Her sweaty palms, the flight reflex and the slight disappointment that Bette wouldn’t want to get together with her…all perfectly played against the desire to connect at the risk of being vulnerable to rejection.

Chatty Tina is endearing and funny. She can come out and play anytime.

I like the cat and mouse aspect that was interwoven into their conversation.

Even when Jess isn’t present, she is – ‘creepy real estate’. HA!

Looking forward to their real estate reconnaissance. Or possibly even Jess’ view of what’s going on.

      Enjoyed this very much!

    4. After all this time you give us TBC?, you should know better than that by now. It was short as you stated but it was nice. We so grave any kind of update on this fabulous story. In answer to Tina’s questions, yes when it comes to her and Bette forever is possible. Acting like a teenager, loved if my daughter acts like this she’s grounded till she’s forty. And to leave off with “soon” I know she heard it. Yeah will be back for more you can bet on it. There just soooooooooooo damn cute. Will be here when you are.

    5. To be a teenager again. I remember those calls or waiting for those calls to come in. You really do capture the emotions really well. I like how Bette and Tina are “teasing” each other.

Oh, please, oh, please continue. And I, for me, shall be very Thankful!

    6. pseud. i think you know how i feek about “this”. “i was jolted yesterday, thats for sure. im not srue exactly what came over me. but it was bette, and me, and for the briefest of moments, it ws us. aaahhhhh. im right there with you baby. dont with the tbc anymore. you could write about them dusting and you have me. whatever you give me and is a gift so thanks. when you can, im right there with you.

    7. I read a lot on this site but rarely do I comment. I think I’ve commented on your story and yours alone! TBC? You better… lol! I loved Tina’s insecurity about calling Bette, looking forward to an NC-17 and a discussion between Jess and Bette that brings them back to where a family should be.

    8. TBC?

P….did you bump your head or something? Personally, I think you FF authors use that TBC? bullshit to get a rise out of us. You know damn well we want you to continue.

Chatty Tina is cute. I love the mental battle. We usually see this happening more with Bette and less with Tina.
