    Tina — Plan B; pt. 87

“Guess who’s home.” Alice‘s faux-cheeriness was in full force.

My first thought waswell, herand I felt my heart pound in my chest. Then I realized it was probably someone who actually lived here. “Did she say anything about school?”

“She’s talking to Frank. I think he’s taking her to the movies.”

    “Just her?”

I could feel my anxiety level again rising. Ever since she had told me about Jess – about what she says that Jess told her – I’ve been nervous to speak with my own daughter.

    “Her and Luis.”

Knowing that is not going to help the anxiety.

“But Frank’s going to take them.”

When did I become so afraid of my own child? “Do you think she knows, Alice?”

“I’m sure she knows something’s up.”

Oh no, what did she hear? “Really?”

“She saw me taking the spoons to the sink, honey. Your daughter knows you.”

She does at that. One thing Jess has learned over the years, my indulgence in ‘ice-cream therapy.’ My drug of choice could be worse, I guess. Today, mint chocolate chip was essential. “Maybe I should talk to her.”

“She’s fine, Tina. Give yourself a little time to get composed while they’re gone. Maybe a nice bath or something.”

    Or something.

    “I’m not sure.”

Alice sat herself down on the chair, I was sitting on the bed, legs crossed, leaning against the headboard. “Take Auntie Al’s word on this.”

Which, of course, reminded me that taking Auntie Al’s words as true played into this mess. “Al?”

“I was trying to be helpful.”

“Little did you know you were helping to hide a conspiracy.” A conspiracy against me, from my own child, and her, conspiring to keep important knowledge hidden from me.

“You need to talk to her.”

    “I’ll talk to Jess tonight.”

“And you’ll need to talk to Jess, too.”

I know Alice means well, again. But perhaps this time I should just follow my instincts. I’m not sure I’m strong enough to talk to her. It was all I could do to move her things into the closet, so I wouldn’t be walking over them every time I walked into the room. I should have folded her clothes neatly, I guess. Instead, I kicked them inside and closed the door. “Alice“

“I don’t think she meant to mislead you.”

No, she meant to withhold vital information about my daughter’s life. Not exactly the same, but does that make it better? “Why couldn’t she talk to me about these things?” It was as much a query to myself as to Alice, but it felt good to say the words.

“She might have, if you’d given her a chance.”

As in, it’s my fault. My fault that my own daughter is afraid of me. My fault that she can’t say these basic things to me.

This is not making me feel better. “Maybe you should leave, Al.”

My friend looked hurt at this, but I have enough conflicts at present. Alice is not helping me become clear on any of these things.

“How about I wait in the living room. And give you some time to take a bath.”

    A bath does sound good.

    “Maybe make a phone call.”

The tears are again gathering in my eyes. If only Alice knew that I’ve tried to call her. Three times now. As self-destructive as that sounds, there’s Jess. I need to know what she’s told Jess.

    She won’t take my calls.

I didn’t leave a message. But she couldn’t be busy every second. If she’s not going to take my calls, I’m not going to go begging after her.

And it’s not that other thoughts are bringing me comfort. “Frank’s with them at the movies?”

“He promised he’d stick with them every moment.”

I try to take comfort in this, but I know people promise a lot of things. Some even promise forever. But how often is a promise just spoken words?

    1. You are torturing me!!! When is Tina going to talk to Jess and Bette. When is she going to find Bette’s phone smashed to smitherines out front? And is Bette still at the convenience store parking lot crying? You have so sucked me into this story…I check for it everyday. Post soon…please!!!

    2. I agree with brigbeach6; all those questions can only be answered by you. Please, please post another. Oh, I think I made the connection on the bon-bons – your drug of choice. Nice. Thanks for writing.

    3. why bette is not answering the phone? strange…lack of communication is never a good thing, i hope tina will talk to jess, bette wiill talk to tina, and jess will talk to them both…love this story

    4. Wake up and smell the coffee, Tina. You’re feeling threatened, for whatever crazy insecure reasons only your anxious untrusting mind can justify and you’re taking it out on both Bette and Jess. I miss the sane (albeit hurt) Tina portrayed prolifically on this site. This version is just nonsense. And why don’t any of her friends try to give her a clue that she’s projecting (even displacing) her own issues onto everyone else, specifically Bette? Where’s the ownership or culpability?Thankfully, I’m starting to like Jess. This story has definitely grown on me. Thanks for continuing it!

    5. So … this is a shitty situation. Tina and Jess need to talk so Tina can get a few things straight. And then she must *insistently* find Bette asap. How’s Bette doing right now? More as soon as possible plz :-)

    6. Wonderful chapter as always, they all need too sit down as a family and talk about this. This is torture what you are doing to us, please make tham talk

    7. I don’t know that Tina is so much afraid of her daughter, but afraid of the fact that Jess shared something important with Bette first. They are all feeing each other’s anxiety by not communicating, letting imagination dictate emotions and actions. One of them needs to make the leap, not only to begin the dialogue that will clear up the current ambiguity, but to get them all talking about what is the core issue for them…fear. Fear of being loved, not being loved, growing up, growing old and/or growing apart.Great chapter pseud!

    8. Good lord, Tina! Stop falling to pieces and sit your two girls down and have a conversation…get everything out in the open…and friggin get on with your life together. Stop making yourself unhappy!!! ….and then I’ll stop ranting to fictional characters… ;) Still loving the story, Pseud.

    9. I just want to shake some sense into Tina! For someone who’s normally the sensible one she has some serious issues with Jess and Bette’s relationship. She needs to stop being so damn paranoid and just face the fact that her daughter is a teenager and as much as she wants to think she should be told everything Jess gets up to it’s kinda obvious that she can’t handle certain things. That said, Bette needs to answer her fricking phone too! Ooooh these two – just band their heads together! Lol, okay that said – great chapter as usual, more soon please.

    10. eat your pride Tina you are the one who did a mistake…i hope you go find Bette and ask her for forgiveness…cant wait to see what Jess wiil say great chappy thanks :o)

    11. I think Tina overreacted when Bette disclosed her conversation with Jess. Tina should forget about the phone and go see Bette. Is Bette back in NYC? Thanks for posting.

    12. I’m always a bit surprised when real actual people (not just the fictional kind portrayed here) try to keep themselves in a bubble about their children’s curiosity/interest in sex. When (if?) I have teenagers, they will be informed, probably more informed than they want to be. Tina’s had a frank and open sex talk with Jess right? She’s not a bubble dweller is she? Look forward to more as always pseud…

    13. I agree with brigbech6, You are torturing me too…I hope Bette returns to the house to talk to Tina, she needs to fight and not run away even though I think Tina was out of line…Great chapter as always, please don’t keep us waiting to long. Thanks a bunch pseud
